I really, really, hate this fucking guy:

“As Commander-in-Chief, I’m pretty tired of some folks trash-talking America’s military and troops,” Obama said in a thinly-veiled rebuke of Trump.

The President also said Gold Star families, who have lost a loved one in armed combat, “have made a sacrifice that most of us cannot begin to imagine,” and called them “the very best of our country. They continue to inspire us every day, every moment.”

This is an open thread.

if they want thier “platform” (aka demands/extortions) to be taken seriously, shouldn’t they run for offices starting in school boards? I guess as usual they just want stuff for free and also still want those reparations which at this point none of us are to blame for. Slave owners in america are all dead. Some of us are so mixed we’d be asking reparations from ourselves. 😉

Dear Mr. Shearer, I usually do not go in policing people but it is Dolley not Dolly. She was considered quite that catch in her day and in her years as First Lady often wore those very sheer dresses of the Regency era.

There is a famous story which Dolley Madison’s nieces enjoyed telling about her. As a former Quaker, Dolley Madison had been raised wearing the modest clothes and bonnets in somber colors which covered her face and body, intended not to draw but deflect attention from her. Once she left the faith, she began dressing in the most current styles of her era, including the low-cut flimsy dresses of the Napoleonic Era. When, at the White House, she recognized one of the members of the public who attended her weekly open house reception as being a fellow—and former—member of her Quaker meetinghouse, she exclaimed to him, looking at his bare head: “Brother, where is thy broadbrim [hat]?” He looked at her exposed upper chest and neck and retorted, “Sister, why is thy kerchief?!” (National First Ladies’ Library)

I’m terrible at remembering stuff. Is anyone here from near Boston?
My good friend found a job near Boston (yay!) but she’s pretty nervous about not knowing anyone there.

    • Ann says:

My grandparents lived in a ‘burb until they passed away, and most of my family still lives in the metro area. Doesn’t help your friend much though. 😛 I hope she likes it.

Boston was one of only two cities I ever wanted to live in. That was a loooong time ago though. It has changed so much (and the drivers are so horrible – really truly, scary horrendous) that I don’t even want to visit – let alone live there – these days.

      • votermom says:

She’s going to be near Lowell University I think.

        • Ann says:

If she’s out in Lowell (which is far enough from Boston to be reasonable), she may want to consider living in New Hampshire after comparing rents (or if she buys a house). One of my aunts did that. She ended up liking it NH so much, they moved there permanently and found jobs in New Hampshire become complete transplants. At least tell her to grocery shop in New Hampshire when she can… no taxes.

          • votermom says:

I looked it up and there is a Costco & a BJ’s in Nashua NH – I think she will shop there. She’s moving from Delaware so she is used to no sales tax. 😀

          • elliesmom says:

There’s no tax on food or groceries in MA. New Hampshire’s only tax revenue comes from property taxes so they’re very high. If you live in NH, but work in MA, you still have to pay MA income taxes. Best bet if you work in MA is to live there, too, and just scoot across the border if you want to buy a TV. 😉

          • elliesmom says:

            I meant food or clothing.

        • elliesmom says:

Lowell is an old city. There’s a national heritage park there centered around the old mills. There’s a really nice quilt museum in the park. In the summer they have canal boat and trolley rides. In another of the big old mills, there’s an artist colony. It’s called the Western Avenue Studios. Some of the artists live there, and some just rent studio space. The first Saturday of every month is open studios. The artists open their studios up to the public to watch them work and maybe buy stuff. My daughter’s studio is on the first floor near the auditorium. It’s called Prunella’s Workshop. Tell your friend to use the “code word” Elliesmom, and I’ll tell Lynn to expect her. Lynn knows a lot of people there. She’ll introduce her around. Most everybody who hangs out there lives in the area. Even if your friend isn’t “artsy”, the people are very friendly and nice, and they love to meet new people.

Driving in Boston is a challenge. There’s no rhyme or reason to the layout of the streets, and lot of streets are one way. The “Big Dig” has changed driving patterns and crossing the city or going to the airport has become a lot easier. To compensate, the city has really good public transportation, and I have never felt unsafe using it. Not even in the wee hours of the morning all by myself. Finding your way around Lowell is complicated by the Merrimack River dividing the city, but once you get familiar with where the bridges are, it’s not scary. I used to think Massachusetts had the worst driver anywhere, but then I moved to Rhode Island.

I left a response that was to have nested here, but did not. (This is the 2nd time in 24 hours that’s happened.) it is a bit later in the thread.
I agree with em about the public transportation. It is very good.
I also agree with em about driving in the Boston area. Bicycle riding is also dangerous. When my daughter lived there, she was biking, following all the rules of the road and was nearly killed by a driver making an illegal turn – – straight into her. She was in hospital for some time and underwent at least 2 surgeries over a 2 year period due to this accident.
She left Boston 2-3 years later and despite the accident, still loves that city.

  24. lateblum says:

When my DD#1 was in her early 30’s, she moved to Boston. She didn’t know anyone. She found a really nice apartment in Newton Center and although she is hardly a “club” type person, she joined the Junior League so she could meet women her age. It was a very smart move on her part and remains friends with some of those women today. She also joined a running club, but oddly enough, it was the friends she made in the Jr. League who stuck.
Good luck to your friend. 🙂

    • votermom says:

      What’s a Junior League?

      • mothy67 says:

        I think that’s ISIS. Snarc

      • lateblum says:

Some cities and towns have organization of young women, called The (whatever the towns name is) Junior League, who serve the towns by mentoring students, doing “good works” throughout the community, holding fundraisers for schools, etc… I used to think of it as more of a social group. But my daughter and her friends tutored school kids on weekends and raised money that went to purchase school supplies and other needs. I don’t know if the organization still exists there. It does here.

I believe this is why the Fire Marshals at the last two Trump rallies close entrance to more supporters when there is clearly more space for them.

    • Somebody says:

Trump is holding a rally tomorrow night in Jacksonville, Florida. Hubby and I have our tickets! The venue where the rally is being held has a seating capacity of 15,000. He’s holding another rally 90 miles south earlier in the day and that venue holds almost 10,000.

I guarantee you if he doesn’t fill those venues the MSM will be running tons of stories about him losing his mojo….. The Kahn deal finally did him in…..Hillary’s convention was so awesome she’s stunted his momentum…..voters have suddenly fallen in love with Tim Kaine…..Trump can’t compete in Florida… get the point. Yet she couldn’t fill a 1,500 seat arena let alone 15,000.

I’m hoping lots of people show up! At least with such a large venues your pretty much assured of getting in and getting a seat. Plus at least for the Jacksonville rally there is plenty of parking with easy access to the venue……I don’t know about Daytona’s parking.

      • taw46 says:

So glad you are going, we can have a report from someone we trust! I have loved the reports from others here that attended one of his rally’s. We can trust each other, never the press.

    • DeniseVB says:

Sometimes the largest venue in a town just isn’t big enough for the Trump Train, especially that people are willing to travel hours to get to them.

Funny stories from 2012. Obama comes to Va Beach and they booked our largest venue, an amphitheater. He shut down the airport for a few hours, then closed the interstate in both directions for his motorcade to make a smooth trip in. The venue was less than half full, but they scrunched everybody to the front so the media’s photos made it look packed.

Romney’s venue was an old airfield and hangar out in the boonies. Only access is about 20 miles of 2-lane country roads. The back up it created was 18 miles. Romney got caught in the traffic and had to walk the last 2 miles to his event in the vintage airplane museum. Overflow was as far as the eye can see on the field. The media didn’t report it.

I’m always amazed at how liberals lack a sense of humor. They lay claim to the world of comedy, but most of the truly funny people, both professionals and the guy on the street, I’ve known have leaned to the right or haven’t leaned at all. I think one of the things the left lacks is the ability to laugh at themselves. I think it’s why the only thing that passes for humor with them is mean-spirited. It helps to point your finger back at yourself sometimes. Trump was pointing the finger at himself, not at the gift or the giver.
