F**king Earworm Open Thread

An earworm, sometimes known as a brainworm,[1] sticky music, or stuck song syndrome,[2] is a catchy piece of music that continually repeats through a person’s mind after it is no longer playing.[3] Phrases used to describe an earworm include “musical imagery repetition”, “involuntary musical imagery”, and “stuck song syndrome”.[1][4][5] The word earworm is a calque from the German Ohrwurm.[6] The earliest known usage is in Desmond Bagley’s 1978 novel Flyaway.[7]
Researchers who have studied and written about the phenomenon include Theodor Reik,[8] Sean Bennett,[9] Oliver Sacks,[1] Daniel Levitin,[10] James Kellaris,[11] Philip Beaman,[12] Vicky Williamson,[13] and, in a more theoretical perspective, Peter Szendy.[14] The phenomenon is common and should not be confused with palinacousis, a rare medical condition caused by damage to the temporal lobe of the brain that results in auditory hallucinations.[15]

This goddamn tune has been stuck in my head for two days!

Bob Dylan wins Nobel Literature Prize

US singer Bob Dylan has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature.

The 75-year-old rock legend received the prize “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

The balladeer, artist and occasional actor is the first songwriter to win the prestigious award.

Yea, I’ve had this earworm thing going for a couple of days now. Mine is the children’s song, Baby Beluga by Raffi. My kids use to listen to it as babies, thought I would look it up on UTube for Lily, and the rest is history. How do I make it go away?

    • elliesmom says:

Sing it all the way through.

    • lateblum says:

      without taking a breath. 😉

      to follow eliiesmom’s suggestion.

      • cynic says:

Lily likes it, so I sing it to her every day. It’s never going to go away, unless I replace it with another silly song. Then, you know, the earworm thing.

On the plus side (I think.), Lily appears to be singing opera these days. She’s carrying a tune that can last two minutes, and her hands and arms even move expressively. People on F/B have been saying that.

        • lateblum says:

How fun!! I wish I were on FB when it comes to these kinds of stories… Calamity sings, too. But right now, she is losing her voice. I think she has the same little head cold/virus that her “big” sister just got over. I think the other granny nanny will be taking care of Calamity if she doesn’t go to day care. I still can’t carry her around the way I used to. 😦

Chicago’s new Municipal I.D., coming next year as proposed by Rahm Emanuel and supported by Hispanic members of the City Council.

Here’s some real good stuff to feel about as you consider to ‘serve/protect’ this God awful wasteland:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says “an individual’s background should never be a barrier to participating” in the life of Chicago.

CITY HALL — Building on Chicago’s status as a Welcoming City, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Wednesday he’s moving ahead with the creation of a municipal identification card.

Emanuel and City Clerk Susana Mendoza said they’d begin the first phase of creating such a card, expected to benefit undocumented immigrants, the homeless, ex-cons, young adults, the elderly and others who sometimes face difficulty in obtaining a government ID.

“Chicago is and has been a city that welcomes everyone, and an individual’s background should never be a barrier to participating in the economic, social or cultural life of Chicago,” Emanuel said in a statement. “With this program, we ensure that all Chicago residents have the identification they need to access vital services.”

“We want to provide access to the resources and economic and educational opportunities that are fundamental to life in our great city,” Mendoza added. “By putting this pass in the hands of people across all ages and demographics, we’re opening doors that may be otherwise closed. We’re honored Mayor Emanuel has partnered with us on this initiative and we’re going to run with it in 2017.”

The card is expected to be ready by the end of next year, and Emanuel said he provided the effort with $1 million in funding in the 2017 budget proposal he submitted to the City Council this week.
City Clerk Susana Mendoza, seen with Ald. Ariel Reboyras, says the municipal IDs should be ready to be issued late next year.

The first step, Emanuel and Mendoza said, was to determine what the card could be used for. They’d function as IDs with proof of residency, of course, but also could be integrated to function as Chicago Public Library cards, to provide discounts at entertainment venues, cultural institutions and other businesses buying in as city partners, and to provide streamlined access for medical or financial services.

“A Chicago municipal ID will be an asset to all Chicagoans and has the potential to link our libraries, cultural institutions and city services under a unified platform,” said Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th). “The municipal ID will also provide our undocumented and homeless neighbors with the needed identification to access critical city services and cultural resources.”

Ald. Danny Solis (25th) called it “a step in the right direction to equipping residents with the resources necessary to lead productive lives,” adding, “All residents of Chicago, regardless of their immigration status, will feel safe and secure and give residents access to services they need to contribute to our great city.”

A working group formed by the mayor last year endorsed the creation of the municipal ID. Earlier this month, the City Council strengthened protections for undocumented immigrants as a Welcoming City, including making it a crime for police officers or other city officials to threaten them with exposure to federal authorities.

“We have a fundamental belief that all human beings have a greater value than the documentation that they carry,” said Sol Flores, executive director of La Casa Norte and a member of that working group. “Chicago’s proposed municipal ID program takes a first step at contributing to the belonging and dignity for those Chicagoans who may need it the most.”

  8. DandyTIger says:

    Latest from Scott

Anyway, getting to the point of this post, if Clinton wins, it will be because women voted for her in landslide proportions while men (on average) preferred Trump. And that means two things of historic importance.

    1. We will elect the first woman to be President of the United States. That’s good for everyone.
    2. Everything that goes wrong with the country from this point forward is women’s fault.

I feel some relief about that. The next four years are likely to be some of the worst in our country’s history. The Republican establishment will make sure of that because a failed America is in their best interest in the short run. Four years from now they want to offer their chosen savior (Paul Ryan). Trump would have a good chance of bullying the Republican establishment as he has done so far. Clinton, not so much. She’ll be buried in scandals, both real and imagined.

Men had a good run. We invented almost everything, and that’s cool. But we also started all of the wars and committed most of the crimes. It’s a mixed record to be sure. Now it’s time for something different, apparently.

Hillary Clinton is all yours, ladies. She and her alleged rapist husband are your brand now. Wear them well.

    • taw46 says:

      Haha, Scott is sooo good.

    • Venus says:

    • DeniseVB says:

Thanks to Obama, I’m so over the “historic” President thing. I wanted to give him a year, because, ya know, that blank slate was promised to be magical. I was on the streets railing against him (and Congress) within a few months. We know with Hillary, this 8 year nightmare will just continue, only more corrupt.

      • blowme0bama says:

Same. I gave him a fair chance, even giving him slack on one of his first obnoxious acts which was releasing terrorists from Guantanamo. Within a couple of months he was already pissing me off and it has been one nightmare after another with this fucktard.

      • I did a post back at TC somewhen between the election and the inauguration where I said that I wanted Obama to have a successful presidency. My theory was that if he did well, so would America, and if he failed that would be bad for America.

I remember saying something to the effect of “I hope I’m wrong about him.”

        • cynic says:

Our local coffee shop brought in a tv for the inauguration (it’s where we knitters meet 1x week). I watched with pride, and even cried. Yup, I gave him a chance. By Feb. 4, I broke my ankle and was laid up. I watched tv, and the more I watched (the whole stimulus thing and the “I won”, the more I despised him. Sure didn’t take long. Once I got my cast off, I was joining the TEA Party and marching, then started attending Republican meetings, and running for Precinct Committeeman. I jumped in with both feet.

    • Constance says:

Don’t give up so soon Scott. Probably all women have been groped and they have a frame work for their thoughts about it. Only a pathetic few curl up and freak out or write a tear stained essay. Most get in a good punch and hurl obscenities at the perp which usually makes him laugh. Then they go on with their day and don’t think about it. Sane women don’t believe Trump is a groper and if he was that would make him a nuisance not a horror.

      • DeniseVB says:

Haven’t we all known those touchy feely type of guys in our lives ? What is “inappropriate touching”? I’ve known huggers who sometimes also plant a big ole sloppy kiss on my cheek. Then there were the butt patters. The faux European double cheek kissers. And a Swedish brother-in-law who liked to kiss ladies’ hands.

Unless Trump was playing honk-honk with the hooters or motor boating them, were’s the problem? (Now com’on ladies, we of a certain age know what rich, flamboyant stud muffin he was 30 years ago, I would have probably personally drugged and dragged him in the plane’s lavatory 😛 )

Has Gloria Allred shown up yet?

        • Mt.Laurel says:

If you are short you also get the head patters. Not to mention jokes about how they better watch out because you if you hit it land below the belt.

I also have to ask, did none of the whiners ever have brothers? Male cousins? Because goodness knows mine never watched what they had to say in my presence unless my dad or one of the uncles was about. Although some of their friends would call them on such language.

        • lyn says:

Gloria wants The Apprentice tapes released to show how poorly Trump treats women.

  9. CiscoKid says:

    Critical part of proposal.
Illegal aliens, criminals and otherwise won’t be reported to ICE.
Anyone want to vote for open borders Hillary now ?

    • lateblum says:

I saw that part up above, Cisco. It isn’t just that they won’t be reported. They can’t be reported . It. Will. Be. A. Crime. to report them.

  10. Venus says:

    • Lulu says:

      The shit coup has backfired.

    • DandyTIger says:

The decisive debate win is starting to show in some polls. But there’s enough crooked and corrupt polls and media that the narrative won’t change. Hold on to your britches, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. And like Scott said, if the corruption wins, the next few years are going to be a disaster (no matter who wins), and it will be on Hillary, Dems, and sadly women in general.

Earwigs – I know man. I used to have horrendous problems sleeping because of it. The offending “music” wasn’t even catchy. It would be some strange cover made up in my head utilizing obnoxious synthesizers and weird techno drum beats. I remember the “meox mix” cat food commercial was one that just tortured me.

    • Kathy says:

Me too..and I hate it. It’s actually a fucking miracle that we aren’t all rolling on the floor drooling. The brain washing we get everyday from the media is stunning. That we can still think for ourselves enough to recognize it is a testament to the human spirit.

    • taw46 says:

Did you HAVE to bring up “meow mix”? There it goes, lol.

    • Somebody says:

      Remember the Vonage song?

      • blowme0bama says:

Yeah, that song in particular never got to me, but it would be like the instrumentation for that song with a synthesizer instead of a human voice for the meow mix disaster insomnia mix tape that would play in my head. I’d played with the idea of making a mix tape of all the bizarre arrangements of crappy music that would get stuck in my head just to see if people actually liked it.

    • blowme0bama says:

Yeah, I hesitated to even type it out.

  13. DandyTIger says:

Ah earwigs. Could be worse. Could be this song:

    • Somebody says:

I hear this song in my head a lot lately

    • This is the original version. Here are a couple interesting factoids:

      1. The cheerleader uniform Toni Basil is wearing is the actual one she wore as a cheerleader at Las Vegas High School in 1961

      2. The girls in the video are real cheerleaders, but not the stereotypical ones. They are the big girls who make up the base of the pyramid and hold up other girls.

I can’t remember if it was here or not, a discussion about refusing to take part in polls should you be called? Most said no, not trusting who may be on the other end of the line, could be a trick !

I know we’ll refuse for fear if they have our phone number, they probably know where we live too. 😛

I’ve never been polled. If I were, I’d likely not respond either because I don’t know who they actually are. IF I KNEW they were legit (which I couldn’t ever know), I still don’t know if I’d participate. I’ve also read of people who hung up because the caller had biased questions.

    • elliesmom says:

When we’ve been polled, I tell them no one in the house is planning to vote.

      • votermom says:

        • Somebody says:

I lie too. You never know what race, religion or level of education I have. One week I’m liberal, the next I’m conservative. Sometimes I’m evangelical and sometimes agnostic. What issues are important to me change as well as my annual income……what can I say, sometimes I feel rich, sometimes poor, LOL!

In essence I mess with them. My favorite calls are the focus group ones for Hillary’s campaign. Somehow I’m on their list. They’ve called multiple times to test phrases. They all basically say the same thing but 5 different ways of saying it. I ALWAYS listen to all of them, have them repeat a couple a swoon over the stupidest sounding one. I assume I’m on the list due to donations in 2008???

And read their stories. I believe they all said they only came forward when they heard him at the debate say he had never done anything to a woman against her consent.
