Jury finds reporter, Rolling Stone responsible for defaming U-Va. dean with gang rape story
A federal court jury decided Friday that a Rolling Stone journalist defamed a former University of Virginia associate dean in a 2014 magazine article about sexual assault on campus that included a debunked account of a fraternity gang rape.
The 10 member jury concluded that the Rolling Stone reporter, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, was responsible for defamation, with actual malice, in the case brought by Nicole Eramo, a U-Va. administrator who oversaw sexual violence cases at the time of the article’s publication. The jury also found the magazine and its publisher responsible for defaming Eramo.
The $7.5 million lawsuit centered on Erdely’s 9,000-word article titled “A Rape on Campus.” The article appeared online in late Nov. 2014 and on newsstands in the magazine’s December 2014 issue.
The story opened with a graphic depiction of a fraternity gang rape that went viral online and sent shock waves across the U-Va. campus community. But within days of the article’s publication, key elements of the account fell apart under scrutiny. The magazine eventually retracted the story in April 2015.
Eramo’s lawsuit came a month later, alleging that the magazine’s portrayal of her as callous and dismissive of rape reports on campus was untrue and unfair.
This is great news, but it isn’t exactly justice.
The real victim here is the fraternity that was falsely accused of gang rape. And one of the guilty parties (serial fabulist “Jackie” the bogus rape victim) has escaped punishment. Most places won’t even give her full name (Jackie Coakley) and keep protecting her like she is a real rape victim.
Even worse, don’t be surprised to see the verdict overturned or reduced on appeal.
But this is still great news. Maybe the tide is finally turning.

Erdely writes over and over stories of crazy people’s rape fantasy as journalism porn. It is sad that she takes such huge advantage over disturbed and vulnerable crazy people. Especially for money for herself. Now maybe she will stop.
There seems to be a pretty big group of women (all ages) who love the drama of wallowing in fake victim-hood. It is a form of mental illness as far as I’m concerned but is there a name for it?
Victim mining? It is probably a weird variety of Munchausen by proxy syndrome (MBPS) as it usually involves very young women who might be considered girls in this society as they are college age or thereabouts and they MUST be in a certain social class. Lower class, non-college or working class young females are ignored even with horrible abuse. They in turn get attention by hyping the victim or fake victim. There is a lot of social “status” involved.
Is it just me who thinks the really “hot” babes are usually not victims in these accounts? It’s the wannabe hotties?
Well that is true that it is not lower class women, who are usually working hard to get by. But I can think of several woman my age (60s) who made every stupid life decision they had an opportunity to make and now wallow in their fake victim of harsh society identity. Every suggestion you give them to improve their lot they “can’t because…” and “no one understands how hard they work and have always worked”, I don’t doubt they are short on money and luxuries but they sit around watching TV and eating all day, so what exactly do they expect. I can’t relate to fake victims. Real victims I wish I could help.

Heads up everybody. I think big brother google is selling information to more than online advertisers. I have gotten two unsolicited phone calls related to fairly recent google searches. There is no other possible explanation for me to be targeted for these phone calls.
# 1 call had to do with knee pain, which I have but is not in any medical file because I haven’t reported it to my doctor…….I got a call about knee pain and have I found relief….click.
#2 now this one is even more interesting. I searched a month or so ago on SS disability. I was trying to figure out how much $$ was coming in to baby mama’s household, because she doesn’t pay a dime and has yet to file financial paperwork with the courts. Just now I get a phone call asking me if I need help filing my social security disability paperwork. What is more is that the woman told me that my recent searches indicated I was seeking information on SS disability.
This is the first I’ve heard of phone calls, we all know about the targeted ads online. I think google is trying to maximize their revenue. I’m lazy I google, it annoys the shit out of my husband. Now I think I’ll heed his advice and use a different search engine.
BTW, in the last thread all of you with information about spirit dinners, the occult and what not; I hope you didn’t use google to search. I would NOT want unsolicited phone calls on those topics!!
Have any of the rest of you experienced this?? Today was the first I have, but it could also be because I didn’t put my phone on do not disturb during so today was maybe the first I’ve answered the calls.
I use bing, but still get the ads. I’ve usually made the purchase so $spent on ads I see for two weeks is a complete waste.
I don’t answer unless I know the caller. The robo calls are getting crazy…Jamaica, Peru, Northern Marianas!!, etc.

I think it may have happened here. My sister lived with us for a bit, had her mail sent here, had surgery on her knee a couple of months ago, and now I’ve gotten several calls about my interest in knee braces.
I often google some outre topics, and for weeks afterwards I get really weird ads.
I use Bing too, and when someone here asked if Soylent is a real brand for a food product, I looked it up, and their ads are now following me everywhere especially on facebook. So creepy. Though I do know there’s a major recall for some of their products now…..because Soylent IS people !!! *snork*

Yes. When I was using google to search for information r/t my back pain and possible measures to avoid surgery, I got a phone call, 2 in fact, with offers of back braces. One telling me that Medicare would pay for it.
I was so dismayed by that phone call that I feared Medicare was trying to avoid paying for surgery by offering me a back brace. It was, in fact, just after I had scheduled the surgery. So I guess I was pretty on edge at that time for me to think Medicare even knew about the surgery yet. smh

Dh came home from hip replacement yesterday. Doing great, but Nurse Ratched has to live a new normal for the next few weeks. Spent the day entertaining his home visiting PT and Nurse. His biggest problem….hasn’t pooped since Monday and he’s super cranky and downed a 10oz bottle of citrate of magnesia, so now expecting the roof to blow off our house anytime now. 😉
I think we are past the deadline for surprises. It takes a few days for scandals to circulate and percolate.
Remember Dulcolax stool softener. It was nearly a week after surgery for me. I tried eating prunes and melon and drinking hot tea as well. Poor guy and poor you. ❤
He drank 10 oz of citrate of magnesia today…..waiting…waiting… 😛 Home nurse told him to cut up prunes and apples and saute in olive oil. It’s Plan B right now. Dr. Surgeon told him to get OTC Colace ?
I think Colace is the same as Dulcolax (the stool softener not the laxative) and both are OTC. That is what my doctor told me to use. They also gave it to me in the hospital and in rehab. I continued to use it until I no longer needed it once I got home. But again, only once a day at the end. They gave it to me twice a day in hospital/rehab.
BTW, I like the sound of cut up prunes & apples sautéed in olive oil.

My dad had to be intubated Thursday night. He is stable but in ICU. . They said flu. He had the shot. I think its allergies. I have same. Change of seasons. He has COPD.
