This year just keeps getting better and better.
President Obama says both he and first lady Michelle Obama will be “very active” in working with people at the grass-roots level to support progressive causes once he leaves office. But despite her popularity and natural public speaking ability, Michelle isn’t interested in a career in politics.
“Michelle will never run for office,” the president told Rolling Stone in an interview conducted the day after the election. “She is as talented a person as I know. You can see the incredible resonance she has with the American people. But I joke that she’s too sensible to want to be in politics.”
Obama says that after he hands the keys to the White House to President-elect Donald Trump, he plans to “sleep for a couple weeks” and take Michelle “on a well-deserved vacation.”
Is Barry still smoking choom? I’m sure the next few years will be fairly lucrative as Obama travels the world giving speeches for big money. But once he is out of power the attention and love will start to wane. The only retired POTUS who managed to maintain a high public profile while making lots of money was Bill Clinton, and that probably had a lot to do with the fact that Hillary was a Senator, the Secretary of State and a presidential candidate. Now that she’s been forcibly retired they have no influence left to sell.
Retired politicians are like retired athletes. Their glory days are over, but some fans will still remember them with nostalgia.
As for Michelle’s “popularity and natural public speaking ability” and her “incredible resonance”, I put that up there with her keen fashion sense and natural beauty.
