Media Doubles Down on Truthiness

When Colbert aired his skit on truthiness I laughed. Those were the bygone Bush43 days and it seemed, well, apt. Little did I know then that as years of Bush43 2.0, aka Obama, drew to a close, the media would become the very thing they mocked. But they have.

As we move towards eventually annotating the entire internet for truthiness, Washington Post reporter, Philip Bump, has created a Chrome Extension to fact check our President Elect’s notoriously dodgy tweets.

Behold, The WaPo’s new Truthiness Machine offers you a way to read Donald Trumps tweets just like they want you to:

It’s a Chrome extension, so Big Tech and Big Social is teaming up with Big Media to basically call the future POTUS liar right to his face. This is well past 1984 territory. This is a verbal fist fight with a man in a box. This is the most dangerous new platform design I’ve ever seen.

I mean, how the fuck do we even fight this? This takes any ability to have an exchange of ideas and persuade one another and makes it impossible. This is what the orthodox do to outsiders. I don’t know how to code or I’d built another extension attacking the WaPo and many other news outlets.

What’s the plan, man? How can we fight this bullshit?

Answers to these, and all your pressing question can be found in the comments of this open thread.

Trump wants attention to this — that is why he wrote “illegally” (’cause it wasn’t illegal, it was unethical) so WaPo’s fact check doesn’t exactly do what they think — it expounds on what he wrote to “explain” that Donna Brazille gave Hillary debate questions.
It’s kind of like their fact check on “Obama founded ISIS” — that only helped Trump as all the talking heads explained how it was some Iraqi who “founded” ISIS but Obama’s withdrawal from Iraq created the vacuum that helped ISIS grow — again, kind of helped Trump’s case with the fact-check.
We fight it by ridiculing their #FakeNews always making excuses for Dems while pretending that “hacking the DNC” = “hacking the election” (implication being votes were hacked).

    • DeniseVB says:

“intelligence agencies believe the hacks originated in Russia” ? There’s proof of that now? Pretty dodgy fact check if you ask me.

        1. I believe it’s gonna be 40 degrees in Chicago tomorrow. I think some people may have other beliefs .
        2. I believe in God. My son’s wife and her entire family do not believe in God. They think Christians – Catholics in particular – are cultists.
        3. They also believe broncobama has been a wonderful leader and I think his terms in office have been disastrous.
        I think I’m right about #’s 2 and 3. I’d like to be right on #1.
Belief is not always based on hard facts. Sometimes it is based on desire. Sometimes it is based on delusional thought.

Joseph Campbell, of The Power of Myth series, tells a story that once he was in a Cathedral with a Bishop or Cardinal, I can’t remember which, who asked ” what I could prove to you that beyond any doubt that that God exists”?
Joseph’s response, “then what would be the value of faith”?

          • lateblum says:

Yes. Faith is exactly what I was thinking as I wrote.

          • Constance says:

I feel that a lot of the reason that Democrats toss out these crazy party “truths” is to give Democrat sheep opportunities to display their faith in the party. Democrats have put their politics in the place that people usually put religion. That is also why Democrats are so self righteous, they are really worse than any church lady used to be.

          • John Denney says:

Adam and Eve believed in God; they walked and talked with Him.
But Eve was convinced by the serpent that God was holding out on them, and chose to believe the serpent rather than God. She doubted God, rather than having faith in Him.

    • I do understand how The Donald uses media to shape the conversation; it’s one of his genius moves. However, this just creates a whole parallel universe for people. Maybe The Don will find a way to make it work for him, but I don’t see this as anything but dangerous right now.

  2. swanspirit says:

We fight it the way many have done in the comments, with ridicule, with questions, with more technology. Not everyone want an extension for their browser that is sketchy and will inevitably slow it down. We let the world know it is just a piece of crapware that Wapo is using to gain access to their computer. Does it make your devices slower? Does it provide a means of hacking or letting a virus or malware have access to your information?

Anybody, well almost anybody, can build a chrome extension, and uploiad it to the Chrome store, just like people build apps, but not a lot of people are going to want one that has a link to WaPo in every post.

Are they going to charge for it from the Chrome store, or will it be free? What else will be attached? Will it send info back to WaPo?

The Post is fake news. They’re in cahoots with the CIA. Remember, just recently, when they listed fake news sites? I read Naked Capitalism, and glad to see that they’re suing. They were a site that criticized Hillary, so you know why they were included. Look when the Left was all outraged. You’ve got to scroll down to all the quotes about the Post and the CIA! I’m sick of hypocrites:

CIA Cloud Over Jeff Bezos’s Washington Post
    December 18, 2013
A petition that has gained more than 15,000 signers so far this week is urging the Washington Post to provide readers with “full disclosure” about a conflict of interest involving the Post’s sole owner Jeff Bezos and his newspaper’s coverage of the CIA.

(…) the petition calls on the Washington Post to be “fully candid with its readers about the fact that the newspaper’s new owner, Jeff Bezos, is the founder and CEO of Amazon which recently landed a $600 million contract with the CIA.”

I’m trying to spend more time on Gab, but twitter is still much easier to navigate and share.

      • lateblum says:

I thought it was just me finding a bit trickier to navigate. I suppose if I had started out on Gab, rather than Twitter, I’d feel more at home there. I just don’t have the time (or interest at this point) to go back and forth between them.

        • DeniseVB says:

My Gab homepage used to look more like twitter, now I’m not seeing the trending topics anymore. I also wish “reposting” would allow for a reply with it, so when it shows up on my timeline peeps will know why I reposted it. Right now, it takes me 3 steps to like, repost and reply. I know, still in Beta 🙂 Twitter has spoiled me.

      • blowme0bama says:

Much easier. Gab has a long way to go.

    • CiscoKid says:

      Jeez Louise.
Trump had nothing, nothing to do with OBAMAS policy and decisions about Aleppo or anywhere else in the Mideast.
That’s one of Obamas parting gifts for Trump, a totally fucked up foreign policy everywhere.

      • lateblum says:

“A totally fucked up foreign policy” that is based on Red Lines drawn in the sand. I believe he did that red line thingie to avoid making uncomfortable policies that he’d have to defend. You know, his “Legacy” was so very important.

        • lizzy says:

Now he can avoid responsibility for his crap decisions and blame Putin for bad results. The partisan crazies are also blaming Trump who isn’t even office yet, although Trump is a thousand times more presidential. But Obama was supplying arms to the rebels.

  18. NBD says:

“This takes any ability to have an exchange of idea and persuade one another and makes it impossible.”
I don’t buy the premise. I have no interest in exchanging ideas with progs, libtards, and RINO cucks. They lost, we won, and there’s nothing to discuss. They can have their Chrome extension, if it makes them feel better. In the meantime, we need to get down to business and stop worrying about trying to have some sort of dialogue with the enemy. At this point, we are two countries: the red states of the USA and the blue states of Dumbfuckistan. We run the show, they can retreat to their safe spaces and read the WaPo as filtered by a Chrome extension.

    • CiscoKid says:

    • lateblum says:

I agree that dialogue is next to impossible and that it feels like we are enemies. I’d just like to be able – once in a while – to disprove their points without resorting to anger. So at Christmas this year I plan to simply let them know that I will not use WaPo or NYT because they pushed the Iraq war and lost all credibility then. (Everyone who is going to insist on those 2 newsies for fact checking were completely opposed to W’s war in Iraq. And, they disputed the WMD storyline at the time.)
This is not to say that I disagree with you on this. I don’t. We won; they lost is what keeps me going right now. 🎅🏼🎅🏼🎅🏼

After the inauguration they’ll be in full impeachment mode. I just hope we have enough of a majority to stop this nonsense. Vote of No Confidence too? Jeebus, we predicted 8 years ago how bad Obama would be and he was. We’re going to need a bigger plunger for this swamp draining project 😀

  20. DandyTIger says:

This techie’s thoughts on the big tech/big MSM thought police: There will be add-ons to browsers and eventually some effort to build in similar things. As we see there is already an effort for Facebook to build in such things. But here’s the thing. The big media and big tech has already lost trust of the majority of people. The fall from grace of the MSM over the last number of years culminating in MAGA huge win shows they’re falling hard. The vile progs in tech and MSM are trying for this desperate move to save themselves and to get back to brainwashing the unclean masses.

It isn’t going to work. It’s too late. The unclean masses have seen who they are. They’ve seen through their propaganda. So they will work around these efforts. And because, at least for now, we still have competition, there will be alternatives for news and social media. Alternative browsers. Alternative aggregators. And even alternative social media systems. The cat is out of the bad. Sorry kids.

The main thing this will likely do though is further isolate vile progs within their bubbles. They will have even less connection to the majority of the population (outside of their gated, white, liberal enclaves), and less connection to what’s really happening.

    • votermom says:

I was thinking there’s usually a way to leave reviews for extensions and stuff. Downrate them and suggest browsers that don’t have them (like Brave).

      • nerdle says:

You may be right that low rating and leaving a scathing review is the way to go. Upvoting would work work, too, but you have to leave a ridiculous reply like how the extension cured your leprosy or something, just to let people know you aren’t serious. I see this all the time on bloatware reviews on Android phones.

Although, they might scrub the review altogether if tech companies are going this far.

  23. votermom says:

A Vist From Saint Hillary – Not a limerick

(Apologies to Clement Moore and also to that other dude Not Clement Moore who totally wrote the original)

‘Twas Inaugural Eve, when all through the land
Not a creature was stirring, not woman nor man
The bunting was hung by the platform with care
In hopes that the President soon would be there

Adult babies were nestled all snug in their safe spots
While visions of peppermint lattes danced through their thoughts
And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my bare feet
Had just settled on the couch to write up some Tweets

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Tore open the designer window treatments and threw up the sash

The moon on the crest of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of midday to objects below
When what should my wondering eyeballs now view
But a nondescript van with a medical crew

With a little old lady so wrinkled with sag
I knew in a moment she must be The Hag
More rapid than eagles her minions they came
And she cackled, and wheezed, and called them by name

“Now Weiner! McAuliffe! Podesta and Mills!
On Huma! Palmieri! On Chelsea and Bill!
To the top of the platform on the Washington Mall
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky
So up to the Capitol her minions they flew
With the van full of medication, and Saint Hillary too

And then, in a twinkling, I heard a guffaw
The grasping and clinging of each grubby paw
As I drew in my head, set for taking my lumps
Down the stairway St. Hillary came with a thump

She was dressed in polyester, from her head to her foot
And her clothes were all draped like a baggy Mao suit
An enemies list she had stashed in her pants
And she looked like a homeless guy starting a rant

Her eyes-how they wandered! Gone wild with strabismus!
She kept sticking her nose into everyone’s business
Her droll little mouth was drawn back in a sneer
And the chin whiskers bleached, until they were clear

A bottle of vodka was clutched in her fist
And the vapors encircled her head like a mist
She had a harsh laugh and a fake Southern drawl
She warn’t no ways tahrred, in spite of it all

She was chubby and plump, a right nasty old elf
And I laughed when I saw her, in spite of myself
A three-hundred-sixty degree twist of her head
Soon gave me to know I had something to dread

She spoke not a word, but went straight to her work
Emptied everyone’s stockings; called me “Deplorable jerk!”
Then mashing the throttle right down to the floor
Her Hoveround rose up the stairway once more

She lurched toward her van, her team gave her a boost
And away they all flew like the down of a goose
But they heard me exclaim, ere they drove out of sight-

Happy Christmas to all! She’s not President tonight!

My brother and I ran a very successful bar. We closed because we could not be brothers and business partners. Worst was his wife. Stay out. His wife, their collective money invested, yet it became unbearable. We sold before it became unbearable.
I can see how a couple can become disenchanted in a business. You bat heads. One loses one wins. Fine in business not so good in family. I took a place that was ringing in 500 on a Saturday night to 6,000. I did not buy bar because I was gay. Neighborhood knew I was and attempted sabotage. I embraced it. My bar was best for women to feel safe. I contributed to food bank and had Catholic priestdoing shots of tequila. I gave my parking lot to flea markets with 20 to food bank. . I played it well. My brother was happy with the cash, but he is a guy that reads all o r those Dan Silva/Nelson DeMille novels. Middle aged guy(I had a thing with Nelson DeMille’s stepson). He is a VP for a yuuuge bigly chain. We grew up poor with bunk beds. He is rigid. Works very hard and follows rules. He irons his jeans. I am his younger gay brother that he pulls off the highway and says please get a haircut.
We were making bank, but our personalities clashed(more his wife and I) so we walked away. I can only imagine what transpired between a million dollar couple. They are different than when they began. Very sick of HGTV cebs being attacked. why? Did anone ever not think color splash guy was gay???? He’s so nice. Now he does lottery winners Seriously anyone, ever. He got attacked for being gay. Does anyone ever think about gay when they watch Chip and Joanna??? I watch all the time. My cable goes to Fox business and HGTV. Jeorpardy if I am at home or Tucker. Steelers are broadcast. I block CNN. All the ala carte programs force cnn and espn. They are the two stations I most want to drop. ESPN is trash. I might be biggest fag ever but I love hockey. I do not want to be preached to when I watch highlights. I want recaps and scores. Disney seems to double down. They can fuck off. I live in my parents basement. Own the house. Cable is up in February. I’ll cancel. HGTV is the only thing I will miss. I hated it at first but my mom watches and I got sucked in. So many times I watch to see which house they choose. I love thinking tiny house buyers are idiots. Seriously buy a trailer. Just wondering
Do you think shows like SVU hold any sway? They take stories from the headlines and always give a far left perspective. Most stories are eerily close to real cases. I used to like the show but its become a megaphone for SJW’s.
I could write the script about the girl who lied about being muslim and harassed on subway last week. The show would turn it around into even though the story was false as a minority in Trump’s America her pretend feelings were valid and it was Donald’s fault.
I know gay adult men that need to blame Republicans for what happened in 1985. Almost noone cares if you are gay. What TV show is not friendly? I think Peter Theil at REthug Convention was the pro-est gay ever in politics. He did not whine. He is who he is. Add in Milo. Also who he is. What happens if rednecks find out most Rethugs have gay friends. Guess what the majority would not care. Kasich lived with a gay man. Rubio went to foam parties. Nightly news has Cooper, lemon, smith, maddow, robin roberts, bet David Muir, most of CNN
People don’t care. Trumps lawyer at start of his career was Roy Cohn.
He said on the campaign trail he’d let transgender use his properties bathrooms. He has Jackie Evencho singing National Anthem. Her sibling is openly transgender and has family support they are suing local school..
Obama campaigned with Mary Mary when it suited him. Seems Trump is consistant.
Gays and blacks are no longer owned by PC crowd and pandering libocrits. Some high profile gays jumped the shark via surrogates claiming Pence wants to use aversion therapy(ECT)
They try so hard to control they look silly. Read a long diatribe about how Trump is Neegan on The Walking Dead. Talk about tone deaf. I was a lit major 30 years ago. I got my ass kicked reading. Lots of challenges. My every opinion was dissected. I think most lit courses today are about agenda. Very sad. I was forced to think today they are told what to think.
I had a chat about Linda Loman from Death of a Salesman. I could not understand what play she read. Her suppositions included that she hated her sons????
I said what? Play is not about woman’s perspective. It’s a tragedy. Linda is married to her house not her man. Miller was a guy commenting from that vista. He is sooooo obvious linda in every scene is “house”wife. Such a unique time. Despite Seinfeld I would argue Biff is the hero. He challenges his own history. My nephew’s feminist friend sees it through millenial feminist eyes not post WWII I asked when assigned were you given any historical context. She said no. How do you read Arthur Miller without knowing about post world war America especially as a feminist????
Funny I was working the door at Joe Allen back in the 90’s Miller came in and then Patricia Kennedy Lawford. The hostess sat them right next to each other. I said why. She had no idea. I asked if she had ever heard of Monroe. Nortwestern grad. No clue. I understand that’s all gossip but was still stunned she was so unaware of the concept of Monroe. I had a sense then that progressivism is nothing more than what you feel right now. No history.

In our new space, the holiday luncheon is on Monday and lots of people from the two larger agencies will be coming to our office to pester us to put our work aside and come to the party.

When you booked your trip, I thought it was a wise move if you wanted a decent room downtown. I looked out of curiosity tonight and those with rooms left are booking them at very high rates. The midrange places like Courtyard near me in the outback zone are still around 225/250 a night – but my guess is they will be going up as well after Christmas as everything closer in is gone.

Is this their next move? Democrats setting up a parallel (2nd) government.

Kids teachers are very impressed by her writing.
She is very funny. I would say Kafkaesque Absurd with her first person being most critical. She can laugh at herself. She writes as an observor like K in The Castle. Convoluted but kind.
She went from an A to an E in reading while still getting straight A’s in math. Her great grandfather was near death. School knew. Zero correspondence. She is getting an A for first period and a D for second. She has never gotten a B. Her school has no take home texts. Zero. My dad was dying she knew school neveracknowledged. I can beat a D but there is almost zero homework. I am at sylvan learning center if my kid needs help. No warning. Teacher never articulated she was failing. A to D. No. I’m dealing with it. A’s in math, science. Social studies and reading. Questions are vague at best. Very liberal. I might challenge her grades.

As far as draining the swamp is a concern, my daughter the management recruiter says she is seeing a lot of resumes popping up from inside and adjacent to the beltway in DC. Some of the swamp is draining itself. She thought perhaps a lot of people working for the government didn’t want to work with/for Trump.
I am a bit more skeptical. I think they are leaving before they are fired, or their nefarious dealings or job records are scrutinized.

Trump’s typo seems to have dominated the news cycle today, here’s one of my favorites…..and another reason for the Electoral College 😀
