Seriously.

Obama confesses he was ‘wildly pretentious’ in college

President Obama recalled his college years in an interview with his longtime friend and former adviser, telling David Axelrod that he used to be “wildly pretentious.”

In an hour-long interview for Axelrod’s CNN podcast “The Axe Files,” the two reminisced about Obama’s year’s in office as he gets ready to depart from the White House in 24 days.

Obama compared his own maturation and development through his school years to his daughters, crediting the “the kind of discipline that I see in my daughters” to his and Michelle’s parenting.

He said his “gradual” transformation began when he was at Occidental College at the beginning of his undergraduate education.

“I became more socially conscious at Occidental even though I was partying, anti-Apartheid movement, starting to be interested in social policy and poverty and starting to study civil rights even if through the haze of a hangover,” Obama said.

He said that experience became “tied up with my racial identity.”

“I start thinking about what it means to be not just a man, but a black man in America and how do you forge dignity and respect in a society that’s still troubled by — by the question of race.”

As he continued to recall his youth, the president also joked that “in retrospect” he was “wildly pretentious.”

In preparation for a next book, Obama said he has started to read old journals and has found “letters that I’ve written to, you know, girls you’re courting or something.”

“They’re impenetrable,” he said. “ I mean, I don’t — I don’t understand what I’m saying, right?”

The letters, he said, “didn’t work, I think, because people were all like, wow, this guy is just too intense.”

I’m shocked. It’s hard to believe that the humble, self-effacing public servant we see today used to be an arrogant, self-centered prick.

He can’t not be involved in something that made the headlines.

They are really, really going to be shocked when Trump turns out to be a Blue Dog Democrat with a sense of humor and pizazz. The Progs and GOPe thought they drove them all underground or they died or something. Nope. Reinvented as the populists they always were anyway.

The days of US pols big-dealing themselves into international reputations with taxpayer money should be over. And rest of the world: Pay for it your damn selves or do without. E Nuff.

I think he remains in that haze and is even more pretentious than anyone could have imagined. And speaking like a valley girl he tries to promote his relevance.

The only relevance he will have for me is when he is the former POTUS.

“Mr. Mullin’s red newspaper in a red county in what is arguably the reddest of states went blue this campaign season and endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. The editorial board, in a gray-shaded column on Page A4 on Oct. 9, wrote that Donald J. Trump lacked “the skills, experience or temperament to hold office.” The headline and subhead read: “For U.S. president: Hillary Clinton is our choice for commander in chief.” http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/26/us/oklahoma-newspaper-hillary-clinton-endorsement.html?_r=0
Shit-head journo’s are stunned from blowback after they virtue signal the hell out of their readers in small town Oklahoma. What asshats. Stop shoving your superiority down people’s throats and you might get to continue selling ads that make a paycheck to support you idiots. Keep it up and the local competing online “paper” will get all the ads and y’all can go starve.

It’s wonderful, ain’t it? They’re unable to deal with the reality that their monopoly on information has been destroyed.

      • Lulu says:

All they had to do is not endorse. Do nada. But NOOOOOOOO! They had to do their little thing to show how superior, moral, educated they are and their readers are not. Our local rag did not endorse but had two pieces on the editorial page written by locals advocating for Hill and Trump. Hill’s was written by an illiterate (Oh sweet Jesus and she taught kids for 35 years!) retired schoolteacher. Trump’s by a local car dealer. I thought it was a clever evasion. Trump won the county at 73% and Hillary got 26% I think.

I’m delighted that you brought up the subject of urban planning. As a city planner for almost 40 years, mostly in Santa Fe NM, I have been keenly aware that this country has not had any kind of successful urban policy in many years…maybe since LBJ. Actually Nixon’s Revenue Sharing program was a good idea that quickly became corrupted by politicians. Trump has an opportunity to do something very quickly and very significant if he will avoid intellectual urban policy types and get some really creative ideas started quickly. I was musing the other day that one good start would be to put Mitt Romney in charge of revitalizing Detroit! Seriously! Trump needs to quickly create a signature kind of brand related to new urban initiatives…something like …A Renaissance Program.

Having turned around many a small place in my lifetime, I can attest to the need for simple things that work like: If you destroy it, you rebuild it; make transportation work and get you into and out of urban areas; provide a variety of housing options; create places for hanging out and celebration; expand hours of operation; safety and security, however you have to do it; mixed uses, especially at ground level; excitement; great art; lots of music. We’ve almost lost many of our great places but it’s not too late. My bible as a planner was an amazing book called A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander et a that came out in 1977. It’s a huge tome with 2153 small chapters.,..a great, stimulating read. And then, of course, yo can always go back and read Jane Jacobs….but it’s a great moment for a renewed urban initiative.,..,.just keep the intellectuals away!

My planning staff would often get irritated with me when I forbid them to use words like “encourage”…planners love that word. If you are actually interested in getting anything done, you don’t “encourage” it, you do it!

When I was just a young thing, I was told by neighbors that the final war, leading to the end of the world as we know it, would be fought over the State of Israel. At the time I could only consider – when I considered it at all – that the next war would be started by the Soviet Union or China. But Israel? I decided that my neighbors were old, ultra religious and too concerned with Biblical prophecies for me to take them seriously.

Funny. I haven’t thought of those neighbors in at least 50 years, but something reminded me of them today.

This is pretty sketchy but I’ll do my best.
Recently the UN passed a resolution that China should stop building islands and to stop placing weapons on them. There was more but I can’t remember.
China’s response nicely diplomatic, basically piss of don’t tell us what to do.
Israel can do exactly as China does. Piss of UN!

Obama warming up in HI, ready to go full Sociopath during last week as President.

“Obama has his mind set on utilizing his last days in office toward sticking it to Israel.

Obama may declare in his final days in office that the United States recognizes an independent state of Palestine, a move that would undoubtedly have devastating security and diplomatic consequences for Israel.
Israel’s right to build homes is settled … under international law
Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been a thorn of moral equivalency in Israel’s side for years, is set to address a Jan. 15 peace conference in Paris. Rumors abound for Kerry’s exact agenda there, but there are worries that he will continue to publicly rebuke the Jewish state, or worse, announce recognition of a Palestinian state.”

Furthermore, said Erekat, all American embassies in the Arab world would be forced to close — not necessarily because Arab leaderships would want to close them, but because the infuriated public in the Arab world would not “allow” for the embassies to continue to operate.
