‘We Are Bleeding Every Single Day.’ Michelle Obama Opens Up to Women’s Group About Racist Attacks

Former First Lady Michelle Obama knows what it feels like to experience racism.

Speaking at Women’s Foundation of Colorado Tuesday evening, Obama opened up about the racist attacks both she and her family have experienced over the years, specifically citing a time when a former West Virginia official called her an “ape in heels,” Reuters reported.

“The shards that cut me the deepest were the ones that intended to cut. I felt how they intended,” she said, referring to the metaphorical shards of glass that came from shattering the glass ceiling when she become the first black First Lady, according to the Denver Post. “Knowing that after eight years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin color.”

“For underrepresented people to pretend like it doesn’t hurt, it lets those who hurt us off the hook,” she added, according to the New York Daily News.

Obama also said that women “endure those cuts in so many ways that we don’t even notice we’re cut,” adding that, “We are living with small tiny cuts, and we are bleeding every single day. And we’re still getting up.”

This nation owes a debt we can never repay to Michelle Obama for all the suffering and deprivation she has endured on our behalf. At the very least she is entitled to enjoy a life of wealth and privilege for her remaining days as compensation for the sacrifices she made for us.

Luckily for her she doesn’t have to live in tacky government housing that was built by slaves anymore.

  1. Poor Mooch couldn’t even shop at Target without being exposed to racism.

    • This week’s People Magazine claims First Lady Michelle Obama was a victim of racism during an undercover visit to Target in 2011.

Mrs. Obama told the magazine, “…the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn’t see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn’t anything new.”

      • nerdle says:

“Undercover.” With the face of the Grinch and the body of a linebacker. Right.

And for Michelle to turn something as innocuous as asking for help into an offense, says more about her than anyone else.

      • 49erDweet says:

Or…….she looked tall enough to help someone in need.

Oh! The suffering Mooch had to put up with!!

        • 49erDweet says:

She wants it both ways! Dresses in “disguise” so she can shop in peace, but still WANTS to be recognized. I’ve seen it all before. Most insecure media whores do the same thing, not to give her more class than she deserves.

        • Constance says:

Yeah! I’m tall and I always get asked at the store to reach stuff. Occasionally a short person or person with frozen shoulder will try to take me all around the store to reach stuff. I don’t really care but now I know it was racisim!

      • DeniseVB says:

Michelle is 6 feet tall. I would see that as helpful to a shorty needing some top shelf help.

        • It happens to me all the time. And not just Mom, total strangers do it too.

          • helenk3 says:

I do it in a store. I am 5’1″ and sometimes the stuff in stores is hard to reach. I never thought about race, I just thought about height. they have it, I don’t

          • DeniseVB says:

Fellow shoppers are the nicest people 🙂

          • elliesmom says:

“I need help” isn’t in my vocabulary so many times I can be seen literally climbing up the shelves to get what I need. More often than not some nice guy will reach up and get it for me. “Thank you” are words I use often in a store. When I go shopping with one of my friends, we have an agreement. She’s over 6′ tall but can’t bend down easily so she gets the stuff on the top shelves, and I get the bottom. What’s the big deal?

      • Mt.Laurel says:

Well my experience has been that when a tall person sees short me eyeing a shelf out of reach, they ask me if they can help. I have rarely had to ask for assistance unless no shoppers are nearby. Then if I really need the item, I have to find an employee.

Flip side, if I see someone trying to figure out what is on the bottom shelf, I offer to look for them since I am closer. This generally gets a laugh – but most welcome it as once you get to a certain age – it is much harder to bend those knees with confidence in public.

    • taw46 says:

I remember the Target trip. The first story that came out, was someone asked her for help getting an item off the shelf. Michelle told it, how she was happy to assist a short lady. Then later it evolved to a “racist” incident, someone treated her as the help instead of the First Lady. The “race” story played better to their base.

      • 49erDweet says:

Hindsight is always better for the base.

      • DeniseVB says:

In 8 years, how many undercover Target trips did she take? One ? In a re-election year? The whole stupid thing was a staged photo-op (covered by AP and appeared on all the Obama friendly media that day). If you Bing image search Michelle Obama Target, it’s her only trip, baseball cap and sunglasses, never seen that in a Target or any store I’ve shopped at, even in NYC.

🎻 Here ya’ go Mooch, the worlds smallest violin playing, Cry Me A River

    • DeniseVB says:

No Michelle, you were an angry FLOTUS who loved being the center of attention, and not very bright either. You constantly whined about living in a prison or “above the store”, the hopeless causes you took on were nothing more than a free ride around the country to do fundraisers or get you to your next vacation spot, etc. etc. None of this had to do with the color of your skin, most critics were obviously questioning the content of your character.

Makes me wonder if they’ll be vacaying in Martha’s Vineyard next month. You know, their “traditional” 3 weeks of summer family fun time.

      • Island Girl says:

It appears her cheek is coming dislodged from her face so yep probably time for a vacation.

        • DeniseVB says:

She had no “cheekbones” in 2008. While I would never dis a fellow woman for her choice to nip, tuck or fill, it’s obvious MO found out about the FREE cosmetic surgery perks at Walter Reed. It’s also a training hospital, doing senior fed and military O wives is practice for putting the war wounded’s faces back together, as in a first come first served. Our local regional military medical center has the same program (Portsmouth, VA). I had a friend who got a free nose job, her kids still look like Jimmy Durante 😀 Not that there’s anything wrong with that…….<3

    • Constance says:

Well she could have helped herself by wearing appropriate clothes for the job. The weird, too short, upholstry print, outfits did not invite respect. And as I’ve always said she should have cut down that white bedspread dress that she donated to the Simthsonian First Ladies exhibit. I would have had that thing cut down to a size 8 that fit a 5’5″ woman then donate it.

      • DeniseVB says:

My problem with her was mostly how she represented the American woman on the world stage. She just seemed not to want to be bothered with protocol and be allowed to “do mah thang”. I remember the early days on MOTUS we joked about holding a fundraiser to send her to Princess School and learn basic manners. Especially correct her habit of “gallumping” instead of walking like a lady. We didn’t expect her to walk in stilettos but those little kitten heels on her pointy shoes looked dangerous for her. Like, my gawd, they’re supporting a lot of weight. 😛

        • Jadzia says:

Kitten heels make everyone but the most petite ladies look like linebackers. I am so glad they went out of style.

          • DeniseVB says:

In the 60’s “kitten heels” were the training heels for young teen girls. Then I spent the next couple of decades in spikey Pappagallos, painful, but I looked good 😀

          • Jadzia says:

I love very high heels and stilettos, but didn’t try kitten heels until I was in my mid 30s. They were impossible!

    • lyn says:

  3. driguana says:

It’s hard to even look at her now. Well, it was hard to even look at her THEN!

  4. helenk3 says:

maybe the fact that Meeeeeschelle was grabbing for everything in sight and screw the taxpayer would have something to do with her having a “hard” life. Most expensive first lady in history. took 27 helpers just to get her dressed.

    • DeniseVB says:

Melania’s trimmed that down to 5 assistants. 🙂

    • mcnorman says:

Tell me, do you believe that her mama raised those girls or she did the work? Mooch was in it for the goodies…that woman has never done an honest days work. Her big job in Chicago at that hospital was how to turf the non paying sick elsewhere.

27 assistants should have to return every penny paid…the woman is an eyesore.

      • DeniseVB says:

They never hired anyone to replace her for that hospital position. She had a high turnover of assistants in 8 years. I’m waiting for at least one of them to write a tell all 😀

    • CiscoKid says:

Same 💩 in Chicago. But with a twist. Disband the Police and let “da’ community” police itself.
The same communities currently that have incurred…
      Year to Date
      Shot and Killed: 373
      Shot and Wounded: 1,764
      Total Shot: 2,137
      Total Homicides: 403
Yea, go right F’king ahead and disband the Police, since ‘da community is doing splendidly self policing.

I used to be a Stephen King fan and remember when “It” was a tv miniseries. Now a movie?

    • He seems nice. That’s a movie for the whole family.

    • Mt.Laurel says:

My mother decide she wanted to watch that mini series based on a couple of the actors and the TV guide write up. I was surprised because my mother (and three of my brothers) could not even watch reruns of the Twilight Zone or Outer Limits without having nightmares. Il agreed to watch it with her even though I am the one who hated clowns/circus. There was a lot of “going to the kitchen for . . .” but she made it through to the end. Afterward she admitted I had a point about those clowns. She never ever bought a child a card/book/toy with a circus theme again.

The same people who put him in the White House are going to keep him in the White House. Those same people are going to never forget that our congress has done nothing to earn their pay (or our confidence). Rather than work together to implement policy to support the will of the people, they have instead dedicated their time to thwarting any progress on our behalf.

At some point, they’ll realize we weren’t fucking around. By that time, they’ll have been voted out of office, not able anymore to immediately go back to influence peddling by becoming lobbyists (thanks to POTUS’ early executive order preventing that), and have nothing but time on their hands to figure out where they went wrong and when we woke up.

  10. I don’t think it’s racist to think that she does kinda resemble and ape, and (it) does wear heels.
Some whites, just like blacks, resemble apes more than people. she/he/whatever it is, does kinda resemble an ape.

    • Jentx says:

Thanks for making me laugh. She looks like a giant ape and her scowl makes her look like an ugly ape. And let’s not be fake here she and Hussein had a single agenda since birth–tear down white society, Christian society, democracy, and anything that isn’t black Muslim separatist (which is what they both are) is the devil according to them. Rev. Wright’s church is NOT a Christian church but rather an off shoot of Farrakhan’s hate church. They sat in the pews for 2 decades and they are evil. The fact that most people don’t realize this cracks me up. In the Muslim world Whoopi would be dead. And they wouldn’t kill her pretty. People are so stupid. I say we drop the women from the view off in an ISIS controlled area and see if they are so quick to kiss ass of Muslim supporters after that–of course they would be dead but you get my drift.

Tomorrow is sneaky souvenir purchase for the xmas stocking day. I am searching high and low for a kids pope Francis t shirt because whether or not he’s my favorite, my 7 year old true believer LOVES him. She loves the pope, she loves the angels, she loves Jesus, I do not know where this is coming from. We were at Santa Maria today and I was dealing with her little sister when her older brother said look over there, and there was the 7 year old at one of the stations, praying to john Paul. She happened to be wearing a white dress and it was pretty much the sweetest thing ever. She prays when she thinks nobody is looking. I was actually a little choked up.

It is curious that “journalists” have not identified Fusion’s original “Trump dossier” Republican donor client who hired them to smear Trump during the 2016 primary or which Repub candidate he supported. Seems like that would be quite a scoop. Why no leaks?

Bruce Jenner and Diane Sawyer could benefit from a history lesson. I know, because I suffered through “sex change” surgery and lived as a woman for eight years. The surgery fixed nothing—it only masked and exacerbated deeper psychological problems.

The beginnings of the transgender movement have gotten lost today in the push for transgender rights, acceptance, and tolerance. If more people were aware of the dark and troubled history of sex-reassignment surgery, perhaps we wouldn’t be so quick to push people toward it.

The setting for the first transgender surgeries (mostly male-to-female) was in university-based clinics, starting in the 1950s and progressing through the 1960s and the 1970s. When the researchers tallied the results and found no objective proof that it was successful—and, in fact, evidence that it was harmful—the universities stopped offering sex-reassignment surgery.

    2. She graduated from law school.
    3. She had a well-paid job at a Chicago hospital.
    4. Her husband was elected to the Illinois legislature.
    5. They lived in a large, expensive house in a good part of Chicago.
    6. Her husband was elected to the US Senate.
    7. The Democratic Party selected her husband as its presidential candidate, and he was elected President of the US in 2008.
    8. She lived in the White House for eight years as First Lady of the US. Her mother lived in the White House with her.
    9. Her children attended a prestigious, private school in Washington, DC.
    10. Her elder daughter was accepted as a student at ivy-league Harvard University.
    11. She and her husband bought an expensive home in Washington, DC.
    12. She and her family travel all over the world to visit and vacation.

Did I leave out a disadvantage to which she has been subjected?
