I’ve tried to watch one recent Christmas film a night. Netflix’s “El Camino Christmas” was crazy but I liked it. Tim Allen was good.

I loved the cinematography in this one. Some parts were filmed in far northern Scandinavia in such extreme cold that they had a hard time keeping the lights, cameras, and even cables working; cables get very brittle in extreme cold. But the vistas on a bright, still day in extreme cold when all moisture has precipitated out of the air . . .

U.S. Regains The Ability To Identify Real National Security Threats

Maybe Donald Trump is just not your type of guy, and certainly not the guy you would want to be President; but keep in mind who was the alternative. Before these things fade into the memory hole, bring back to mind a few of the wildly incompetent policies of the previous administration.

    Friends of Bernie Sanders
    Sisters and Brothers –

The wealthy and powerful in this country have never had it so good.

While the very rich get richer and the middle class shrinks, the Republican majority has passed a deeply unpopular tax bill that would make income and wealth inequality much worse. This legislation, at the end of ten years, would provide 83 percent of the tax benefits to the top 1 percent and the largest corporations. Incredibly, 60 percent of the benefits would go to the top 1/10th of one percent. Meanwhile, by 2027, taxes on 92 million middle class households would increase. Further, 13 million people will lose their health insurance and premiums on the individual market will increase by 10 percent.

Having passed this horrific legislation, the Republican leadership now wants to shut down Congress and head home for the Christmas break.

    Well, I respectfully disagree.

Maybe, just maybe, before Congress adjourns for the holidays they should pay attention to the needs of the working families of our country and not just the billionaire class.

Maybe, just maybe, before Congress goes home they might want to address the incredible anxiety that some 800,000 Dreamers are facing who are on the verge of losing their legal status, and face the possibility of deportation. Can you imagine being 20 years old, having spent virtually your entire life in the United States, and now worrying about being forced out of the only country you have ever known because of Trump’s incredibly ugly decision to repeal DACA? Despicable.

Congress must act NOW to protect the Dreamers.

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Community Health Centers, whose funding expired on September 30, must be reauthorized and fully funded. Before Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan shut down Congress for the holiday season tens of millions of Americans and their kids must be guaranteed that they will not be thrown off of the health insurance they currently have.

Congress must act NOW to protect health care for children and working families.

If Congress does not act now, 1.5 million workers and retirees in multi-employer pension plans could lose the pensions they were promised by up to 60 percent. People who have worked their entire lives for guaranteed pensions should not be forced to live in poverty because Congress broke the promise it made to them.

Congress must act NOW to protect the earned pensions of 1.5 million American workers.

While members of Congress return home for holiday celebrations, many people in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands will not be able to turn on their Christmas lights because they continue to have no electricity as a result of the devastation caused by the recent hurricanes. Congress must pass significant disaster relief to help the people of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Texas and Florida.

Congress must act NOW to provide financial disaster assistance to those communities hit hard by recent natural disasters.

Sisters and brothers: Our message is simple. Congress cannot simply close shop, go home and leave millions of working people in desperate anxiety.

  18. elliesmom says:

I was talking on the air to my younger brother today. The radio station where he works was having a debate over the tax cuts. Call into the AM station if you’re against. The FM station if you’re for. Being the good little Democrat that he is, my brother is against, of course. He has no real estate taxes or mortgage interest to itemize so the increase in the standard deduction is going to give him as much of reduction in his tax bill as anyone in his tax bracket for that. Being a good big sister, I offered to match it if he returned his money from the tax cut to the government or donated it to the charity of his choice. Send me the receipt, and I’ll send them the same amount. He knew he was talking to his sister, but we didn’t disclose that. He was a good sport about the beating he took. I’m not the least bit concerned I’ll ever have to get my checkbook out, but it would be worth it to see him do it. While he’s OK with being virtuous with other people’s money, it’s different when it’s his. In all fairness, he doesn’t have a lot of money lying around, but this will be money he didn’t expect to have. It must suck to have a much older sister.

Andrew Montoya, 25, of Longmont, Colorado, got a letter from the state government last month notifying him that his three daughters ― Audrey, 8, Katrina, 5, and Scarlett, 3 ― might wind up uninsured because of Congress’ inaction.

“They need to stop playing politics with our kids,” said Montoya, an attorney at an organization that provides assistance to people with disabilities.

Montoya and his wife, Nicole, were both uninsured for most of their lives before the Affordable Care Act became law and they qualified for tax credits to reduce their monthly premiums. CHIP is called Child Health Plan Plus in Colorado.

“We qualify because my income working as an attorney for a nonprofit organization is not very high,” Montoya said.

He ran the numbers and discovered that adding his daughters to his health insurance policy would increase the cost by $450 to $650 a month, which he can’t afford on his salary. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) has asked the state legislature to fund CHIP until Congress acts.

According to my math he became a father at 17. Maybe he should have waited until he was out of law school and working a job with good insurance before he started making babies. Why are we subsidizing his life choices?

Campus Leftists Tear Down Kate Steinle Posters at UC San Diego

Left-wing students at the University of California San Diego were caught on video tearing down posters featuring the late Kate Steinle, the 32-year-old who was killed by an illegal alien in “sanctuary city” San Francisco in 2015.

But instead of punishing them for violating free speech rights, the university’s Office for the Prevention of Harassment & Discrimination is reportedly investigating Gregory Lu, the student who put up the posters, for “bias.”

    Christmas tree syndrome: http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2017/12/18/christmas-tree-syndrome/
“But real trees can trigger an allergic reaction with symptoms that can include: wheezing, coughs, congestion, sore eyes and potentially life-threatening asthma attacks.”
Over twenty years ago my daughter and I got so sick during Christmas that BOTH of us landed in the ER. Steroids, anti-biotics, and a breathing thingie for me were prescribed. We both had allergy testing after we got a little better and it was mold on cut real Christmas trees that starts forming as soon as they are cut that was the culprit. Now only FAKE trees and I vacuum it for dust before it goes up in my house.

    • DeniseVB says:

I’ve been telling people for years that if you’re sick over the holidays it may be your real tree. We figured it out when bought our first artificial tree so we can keep it up longer. Nobody got the crud over the holidays after that. It was a Christmas Miracle 😀

      • elliesmom says:

I love a real tree, and every few years I leave the fake one in the box. I get contact dermatitis from touching the real tree so I have to wear long sleeves and gloves to decorate it and take it down. I’ve tried buying different varieties of tree, but it doesn’t seem to make a lot of difference. The guy who runs the local tree farm watched my arm break out when I helped him tie the tree into our trunk a couple of years ago. I took my gloves off to tie the rope. He suggested it might be something that gets sprayed on the trees since I have no problem with “wild” trees. Since no one else ever steps up to the plate to take the tree down, I make the decision about which kind of tree we’ll have every year. This year I dragged the tree up from the basement.

    • lateblum says:

Vacuuming the fake tee before putting it up is a great idea. The dust, dust mites, and loose “needles” all contribute to the sneezing and coughing that happens when I put the tree up. The contact dermatitis from the real evergreen trees is what ultimately made me buy a fake tree. Plus, I can take the tree down whenever I feel like it.

          • Lulu says:

Soros is reduced to piddling with the Irish constitution. How far they have fallen. They are in a YUGE money crunch. I understand the eastern Europeans looking at the fascist scourge but this is really more like Spain fighting the Reformation and the beginning of what became parliamentary democracy. Spain wanted to be the big dog, and take everyone’s money and impose a really horrible form of Roman Catholicism (corrupt as hell, micromanaging, cruel, absolute monarchy and idiotically repulsive) on the rest of Europe. They got wars everywhere as Europe rebelled and bankrupted them. Merkel is like Phillip II in that she just wants to save your soul, torture you to make you “good” AND take all your money.
