Overton Window Overnight Open Thread

The last one was getting full. Here’s some recurring thoughts I’ve been having lately. Was reminded again when my mother-in-law posted on FB tonight. 😉

  1. Holy shit. Cruz got to the school via Uber.

  2. Feck. I hope I don’t fail out of law school. Taking 8 hours this semester and working full time, and being the only functioning member of my narcissistic household (I’m not bitter) AND I have a midterm next week in my toughest class. Haven’t looked at shit in 4 days due to being sick. Guess I’m gonna pray. 🤷

Cruz also bought a refreshing drink at the local Walmart, then proceeded to the local McD’s for a meal. According to my “news” feeds. It was a local LEO who spotted him walking in the neighborhood on his way home?

The Democrat National Committee is fundraising off the mass shooting in Florida which left 17 people dead.

Do they not know that slavery was the norm in Africa at that time and well into the twentieth century? It still pops up today in various places in Africa through kidnapping of school girls to capturing migrants in Libya to sell off for labor. Also genetic studies show that sub-Sarharan DNA does not show up in the Middle East and North Africa because the enslaved men were worked to death or castrated and the women forcibly aborted so they didn’t reproduce and they just got new slaves. Slavery was used by warring tribes as a means of war, population control and terror. Many tribes sold off their “trouble-makers” or political enemies within their own tribes. And of course it was used to make money. More enslaved peoples were thrown off ships during storms (to change the ballast) or avoid Royal Navy enforcement ships that committed suicide meaning they were murdered. Slavery, horrible as it was, was very common in Africa as it was in Islamic countries from North Africa to Russia.

      • Underwhelmed says:

Didn’t you get the memo? The worst things in the world have only ever happened to African Americans. The only people in the world to suffer are African Americans. No African American is guilty of any charged crime because no one has been victimised like they have. And African Americans are the only humans in history to be enslaved. Ever.

  12. Lulu says:

The root cause of the school shootings, as with most mass murders, is insane people who are determined to kill people. If they didn’t have a gun they use knives, motor vehicles, bombs, etc. This current loon was a known severe problem but the school could not release to relevent authorities the severity of his mental issues due to “privacy” laws and requirements that they bend over backwards to educate him rather than educate thousands of other children in their care. Family, extended in his case since his parents had died, had little to no recourse of mandatory treatment for mental issues until he did something horrific because of his civil rights in our statutes exceed the rights of his victims and the general welfare of the public. The FBI did not look for him after being tipped off to his highly violent and disturbing (and open wish to shoot up a school) social media harming animals and preoccupation with weapons because laws and political policy protect the insane over everyone else. The pendulum has swung about as far towards the enablement of the mentally unbalanced to the detriment and misery of everyone else. A humane and fair way has to be found to deal with them or they will increasingly terrorize the entire society. Pretending insanity is just another acceptable human condition and removing rational people’s right to protect themselves from the insane either with self defense or legal incompetency remedies is ridiculous.

I was tending bar in Manhattan shortly after the Billie Boggs case. UWS as Anthony can attest is a very highly educated liberal hood. Her case against involuntary commitment floored me as everyone cheered the ACLU but fought tooth and nail to block homeless shelters near them. Let the severely mentally ill run free just not near me.

      • swanspirit says:

This shooter, has the appearance of fetal alcohol syndrome. This is not making an excuse for him, but fact. He is obviously impaired in some way, beyond motivated to murder.

We need facts to deal accurately and effectively with such a horrific problem as a school shooter. The facts are, most of these shooters have been impaired in some way, slipped through the social safety nets, and still gained access to firearms. Those are three important, inescapable factors that led to this tragedy. We cannot as a society fix the problem, if we don’t address what it is.

It makes no sense, to protect the privacy of impaired people, and let them go homeless in the streets at the same time.
Running around screaming take away the guns, is a perpetually ineffective response. We don’t take everyone’s cars away, because there are impaired drivers. We focus on the impaired drivers. And we put safety precautions in place for all the other drivers, and constantly improve them.

        • Lulu says:

As in Mothy’s example, the ACLU and like minded groups have focused only on the ill person’s civil liberties to the exclusion and harm of everyone elses civil liberties such as staying alive and unharmed. How they justify ill people suffering and making everyone else suffer with them is a strange remedy. They ACLU and proggies seem to find something divine in the dysfunction and misery they spread including that of the mentally ill. The mentally ill in all forms are the victims and everyone must account for them even if you have nothing to do with it. This of course includes the poor families terrorized by ill family members. I think PDT is inching this way and of course the Dems and media grabbers are screaming gun control and it is his fault which is insanity too. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/trump-steers-conversation-from-guns-to-mental-health-in-florida-shooting-aftermath/article/2649277

There was plenty there to act on.

“It emerged Thursday that police had been called to Cruz’s mother’s home 39 times since 2010, for issues ranging including ‘mentally ill person,’ ‘child/elderly abuse,’ ‘domestic disturbance,’ ‘missing person,’ and several others, according to documents viewed by CNN. ”

          • Lulu says:

He was as crazy as a loon. His elderly mother was at wit’s end to call the cops that many times. Her death ended his ability to direct it all mainly at her. He probably drove her crazy constantly demanding guns, etc. Did she enable him, etc. Probably but saying no to him meant abuse from him. Horrible situation and repeated in every town.

        • I raised the specter of FAS yesterday. Nice to see confirmation for someone with medical training. Sad that it went untreated, though.

    • John Denney says:

The Columbine shooters were not insane, but perfectly logical, given their, “education”.
The Denver Post (I think) made available a pdf of images of many of their documents, including a diary.
In the diary, he wrote of having to attend anger management classes where he was told to “be nice”. He asked his diary why should he? Evolution got us to where we are by f***ing and fighting, so why stop? And there are so many useless people just consuming resources, we need to thin the herd. Especially Christians.
The school shooting was to be just the start of the culling.

If there is no God, it’s perfectly logical.

    • taw46 says:

All of this for what is, if true, a consensual affair (isn’t that what they said about Bill?). But they really hope to destroy his support among the evangelical base and probably hoping that Melania will leave him. I see that all the time on Twitter.

And if you missed it yesterday, supposedly Stormy Daniels has a dress that she will have DNA tested, to prove she was with Trump.

This will never, ever, ever stop.

          • dm says:

I read that piece this morning. Quite honestly, it’s probably mostly true. Most powerful, wealthy, influential men probably do have affairs and Trump is probably no exception. I’ve never tried to defend his “honor” per se…I always figured he was a hound dog. I voted for the person best suited to the country’s needs, which none of this crap will change my mind about that. So many times (like, almost always) we are left with the lesser of two evils. I really didn’t feel that way voting for Trump. He is, IMO, a flawed human being which if I’m not mistaken, we all are. But he has smarts, saavy, good business sense, and he has the ability to see and tackle many of the issues that have been dragging our country down…I’m good with that.

DACA dead on March 5. No statute by then the courts will kill it (not including rogue judges who rule without original jurisdiction which is in Brownsville Tx and the Fifth Circuit). Twenty something states said don’t make us pay for this crap as it is illegal and Sessions said the DOJ agrees with them and won’t defend Obama regulations made up out of ether.
When someone asked what Dems were willing to pay for DACA? the answer is nothing. Next after that will be federal tax dollars in grants, etc being withheld to pay for illegals and the states will have to pay for them themselves with their own tax dollars. AND the big fight over counting non-citizens in the census giving those states apportionment numbers in their districting for House of Representatives. Woo! Big fun. This is Sessions bailiwick and why he is in the cabinet.

      • taw46 says:

I watched Sessions for years on the Senate floor, he is the only one I remember who spoke truth about immigration, both legal and illegal. Good on him for calling out the Obama administration.

“Despite opposition in the courts, and political turmoil, Sessions said that the Trump administration had still achieved more than he had expected it to do when he first supported Trump for president.

“I would say that in some ways more progress has been made on the agendas that I cared about, and I think the American people cared about, than I expected, as a denizen of the Senate for 20 years, seeing proposals die right and left.”
