Last Day ! A Reminder from Netroots Nation.

Email submitted in it’s entirety, as a public service of course. I wonder if RD has submitted a panel idea yet? So much has changed since YK2007, I stay on their mailing list hoping it changes back. You’re welcome 😀

Dear Denise,

I wanted to give you one last reminder that today is the last day to submit your proposal for a panel, training or Screening Series session for this year’s Netroots Nation conference.

Do you have an idea you’d like to see on the agenda in New Orleans? Click here to submit your idea BY TONIGHT at 11:59pm Pacific time.

As always, you can submit on any topic, but here are a few areas we’re looking to emphasize this year:

Panels on how we win in 2018 and 2020, specifically ones that focus on investing in the multi-racial, multi-cultural communities that make up the majority of our electorate
Sessions that highlight the role communities of color and specifically women of color play in winning progressive victories (both electoral and legislative)
Conversations about building grassroots power, especially by raising up marginalized voices, investing in diverse communities and supporting local organizing
Trainings that help new activists grow into successful organizers
Advanced trainings that focus on cutting-edge tools and techniques
Trainings that recognize the needs of people working at organizations with different capacities and budgets
Are you ready to submit your idea?

YES, I’M READY! Click here to read the full list of guidelines and submit your proposal now.

See you in New Orleans,
Mary Rickles
Netroots Nation

PS: Next week, you’ll have a chance to weigh in and vote on the sessions you like best. Stay tuned for more info.

First day of Spring?! #WTF ???

When I went to bed last night, the storm was supposed to start at 9 am. Now the weather service has it starting at 3 pm. No sign of any snow yet. The sun is shining. I’m OK if the storm has changed its mind.

      • DeniseVB says:

We just got that “wintry mix” at 3pm. Gloppy giant snow with rain. Shouldn’t hang around for long. Brings back memories of living in Lake Placid when the Rink Moms scheduled a mountain hike for Mother’s Day, ended up being a blizzard…in mid-May…so we hiked with car pools to a giant Mall in Plattsburgh instead. We had fun 🙂 Miss those rink mom days, like stage moms only more stealthy, with blades !

      • Anthony says:

That’s cuz it’s all down here. I took this 2 days ago and had such hope…

        • elliesmom says:

I have crocuses peeking out here, but that’s never a good indicator winter weather is over. They get buried under snow at least once most springs It’s clouding over, and the temperature is going down. It’s been in the low 40s all day, and it’s slipped to 38, but still no snow. That’s good for the evening commuters anyway. I planned my whole day around being snowed in again. I even made beef pie last night so I’d have pie crust all made for quiche today.

          • Anthony says:

A little bit of lore about crocuses from my repository of useless knowledge:

The ancient Greeks cultivated crocus flowers for their saffron (saffron is actually the stamen of the crocus flower, which takes forever to harvest, and accounts for the high cost of it today). The Saffron Crocus was sacred to the goddess Hecate, and her priests and priestesses dyed their ritual garments with it, which is why they are often depicted in yellow/orange chitons.

When Persephone was abducted by Hades, Demeter went apeshit and looked at the human race and said “Fuck you all – I’ve gotta go rescue my kid!” And the earth fell to ruin. No crops, no food, no herbs, no flowers. Try as she might, she couldn’t find her daughter, so she asked Hecate to ask Helios if he knew where Persephone might be. Helios spilled the beans, but the story gets complicated here. Demeter couldn’t go into the underworld safely, but Hecate was one of the guardians of the underworld so Demeter asked her to ride shotgun. Hecate accepted and they went under together, like Thelma and Louise but minus the cool T-bird.

They looked and looked, but Shady Hades didn’t want to give up his new girl so quickly, so he made the journey really treacherous. Demeter, still being connected to the earthly plane, heard the wailing of her people who were in a panic because nothing was sprouting, and I guess they were too fucking dumb to figure out how to plant, so they bitched and moaned to the point that both Demeter and Hecate were ready to pull their hair out.

Demeter was torn – should she continue to seek her daughter? Or should she abandon her in the underworld so she could fulfill her duties as Mother Nature and grow shit to feed her whiny kids. All of a sudden, Hecate said “Hold my beer!” And started running around willy-nilly, pushing the crocuses, her sacred flower, up from underworld until they broke through the surface of the earth. The people on earth relaxed, and Demeter and Hecate went on with their journey, again, like Thelma and Louise but with a happier ending.

Eventually, Demeter found Persephone, who had acquired a taste for pomegranate. (Among other things, lol) thus making this mad scene a yearly event, This is one of the earliest references to how crocuses became the harbinger of Spring, although the original myth uses much cleaner language than mine. If you got this far, thanks for reading and I hope it both amused and informed you

          • Ann says:

Anthony, if you had been teaching Greek Mythology when I went to school, I’d have paid attention. 🙂

          • elliesmom says:

I’ve always planted a clump of crocuses near our front steps so they’d get noticed when they first came up. We moved into our current house in December, and I figured we’d be without them for our first spring. But come spring there they were at the bottom of the stairs.

Sorry for all your snow troubles! ❄️❄️❄️

I need to wash my vehicle (again). We had a snow last week and the local DPW must have decided they needed to clear out all remaining salt for the season. 🙄 My vehicle is encrusted. If someone needs my fingerprints, they can just lift them from the tailgate. It is just gross. My backup camera shows just a grey haze. Makes me realize just how much I use the darned thing.

We lost power and internet for a couple of hours here. Isn’t that odd. The NE gets slammed with snow, Florida loses power???? The high winds?

      • taw46 says:

We had power, just lost internet and cell phone service, but just for AT&T. Whatever it was, took all day to repair.

  17. helenk3 says:

I am listening to all this bs about the call to Putin to congratulate him on his continuing as president of Russia. It was good manners to make that call.
the heads of state do not have to be BFFs, but there are going to be times that things happen where they will need to have conversations and maybe even work together to fix a mutual problem. Example isis, both countries consider them enemies.
We have all met people that we worked with , that we could not stand. We had a job to do and if it meant working together than that is what we had to do.
Do I think Putin is a good man, Hell NO. but we might need him along with China to contain rocket man in North Korea. We needed Russia to stop Germany in WW2 and Stalin was a lot worse than Putin.

    just my opinion

    • Mt.Laurel says:

To not do so is bad manners and would be seen as a slight. Plain and simple. Something most of us learned from our parents. But then the people complaining are the same ones that are anti home schooling and because they feel that the government should raise your children.
