I was working in a movie theater when this came out. The only funny thing in the entire movie was when Meryl Streep’s dog jumped off the cliff. My career in the film industry lasted about two months.

Yeah, your IQ was obviously too high to work in the entertainment industry.

      • blowme0bama says:

I’d forgotten about that. We had to catch bits and pieces of the movies because the films ended at different times and we had to rush in and clean up the cinemuck between shows. I remember there was some movie called “The Bear” that I kind of liked that was showing at the same time, but I was never able to piece it all together as to what the story was. Maybe it was just the pictures of the bear that I liked and there wasn’t really a story.

The punishment does not fit Roseanne’s “crime.”

        • Constance says:

You know since hundreds of people lost their jobs on the Roseanne show it would have been human of VJ to step up and say, “Rosanne apologized, I accept the apology move on ABC and don’t let hundreds lose their job because of a slight against me. Rosanne has learned her lesson” But Noooooooooo! VJ just had a slight bit of power and doesn’t care about anything or anyone else.

          • lyn says:

I agree, and I posted the same sentiment on FB.

Never let a crisis go to waste. That whole Obama Mob are a pox on society. On the upside, I didn’t realize how many people never heard of Valerie Jarrett, they are now 🙂

          • swanspirit says:

Valerie Jarrett care about people losing jobs??? That’s the biggest irony of this entire Roseanne debacle.

Valerie Jarrett, is the racist Chicago slumlord who made over 100 deals with Tony Rezco, the corrupt real estate dealer and convicted felon.

She didn’t care if black people lost their homes, much less their jobs.

          • lateblum says:

Bronco bama was instrumental in helping Rezko and ValJar obtain permits despite their atrocious slumlord histories.

One of my all time favorite movies… at the time it was panned… but if you watch, it’s a terrific life lesson… like so much else with Roseanne.

  21. swanspirit says:

With his military experience from serving during the American Revolution, the thirty-two year old Marquis de Lafayette quickly assumed a prominent role in the opening chapter of the French Revolution. After the Bastille fell, Lafayette was placed in command of a local national guard formed to keep order throughout France.

The Bastille main prison key was turned over to Lafayette shortly after the Bastille was stormed on July 14, 1789 by angry citizens rioting in the streets of Paris. Long a symbol of royal despotism, the Bastille was a natural target when violence erupted after severe shortages of bread led the populace into the streets. Lafayette was optimistic about the fate of the revolution when he prepared to ship the Bastille key to George Washington in March of 1790.

Several months passed before the gift finally arrived at its destination. On the first leg of the journey Lafayette entrusted the key to Thomas Paine, well-known for his participation in the American Revolution. The actual presentation to George Washington late in the summer of 1790 was an honor that fell to John Rutledge, Jr., a South Carolinian returning to the United States from London.

The principal key to the Bastille is made of wrought iron and weighs one pound, three ounces. Washington’s prominent display of this celebrated souvenir in the presidential household illustrated his appreciation to his French pupil as well as recognition of its symbolic importance in America. Shown first at a presidential levee in New York in August, the key continued to be showcased in Philadelphia when the seat of government moved there in the fall of 1790.

When I went to culinary school, I think I loved my bread baking instructor the best. He was retired military and had hundreds of stories to tell about baking bread in all kinds of conditions. He showed us how bread was baked in the late 1700s. Because control of the heat was much dicier, and the yeast was wild, not cultivated, the dough often overflowed and ended up sticking to and baking on the floor of the oven. This stuck on, sometimes burnt, dough was called the “cake”. When Marie Antoinette said, “Let them eat cake”, this was what she meant the peasants should eat, not an expensive sweet treat. It doesn’t change her attitude toward the common folk, but it does make her seem less stupid to know the truth. 🙂

        • swanspirit says:

I love those little details, thanks so much for that!

” This stuck on, sometimes burnt, dough was called the “cake”. When Marie Antoinette said, “Let them eat cake”, this was what she meant the peasants should eat, not an expensive sweet treat..”
Another explanation that I have read is that French bakers would spread flour/water mixture on the brick baking surface of the oven and at the end of the day, scrape it off and throw out the “cake”. Either/both descriptions of “Cake” show Marie’s distain for the poor.

          • Miranda says:

Antonia Fraser wrote a good biography of Marie Antoinette if anyone is interested. Basically, she just went along with the policies of the French court that were already in place when she married into it at 15. She became the focus of the mob’s anger, but she didn’t actually do anything.

        • BjornTheBorg says:

Ummm. Nope. The phrase attributed to Marie Antoinette is “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”, and no French speaker would confuse burnt dough with brioche. Actually, there’s no good reason to believe that she ever uttered the phrase anyway. So, as amusing as the story might be, it counts as 18th century fake news.

        • lyn says:

I thought Mooch said it. 😉

    • John Denney says:

Ann Coulter’s book, “Demonic” puts the storming of the Bastille into a completely different light.

The Bastille was indeed a symbol, but just a symbol; it was all but abandoned. The only “resistance” was an old watchman.

Marie Antoinette was not callous to the plight of the people, and never uttered, “Let them eat cake”. Instead, she did what she could to help the people.

Uber is adding additional features — including a panic button — to help stop sexual assault and harassment.
