Totally OT. Hubby and I went into daughter’s bedroom with a big lawn and leaf bag…..because A) it is out of hand and B) tomorrow is trash day, C) tired of asking/nagging. BTW filled a 39 gallon trash bag 😮 All of my kids have a very high IQ, but none of them were ever smart enough to find a trash can 🙄 Hubby fully admits it comes from his side, specifically from his mother….trust me he’s right.
Anyway hubby had this huge stack of dishes and was trying to make his way out of DD bedroom to the kitchen. He’s moaning and making gag sounds. In a huff she rushes over to snatch the dishes from him, insisting “I’ll take care of it dad”. Precariously balanced on top of the pile was a large plastic glass with something NASTY in it…..fur growing on it. I heard hubby scream NOOOO. Turned around just in time to see him get covered 😂😂😂

It could be worse. Special Greg put a bag of grapes under his bed and forgot about them for weeks. We had a horrible fruit fly outbreak (covering the walls in his room, so gross). Took a long time and dozens of foggers later to finally get rid of them, those little f**kers breed and lay eggs every 10 seconds it seemed. There, feel better? 😀
My inherited home up in the country had a power outage about 3 years ago. When we got up there, everything in the refrigerator was ruined and fruit flies had somehow gotten into the refrigerator. I have no idea how those fuckers survived but we were finding new fruit fly maggots in a hibernation state for years inside the refrigerator when we’d return every couple of weeks. It’s only been the last 6 months or so before they finally seem to have died out.

Put your foot down – like you said, throw the toys away if he doesn’t pick them up. Consequences to make it in their own self interest to pick up after themselves. Don’t feed them. Shit.
That whole RESPECT thing is what I finally had to use with my 7yr old gbaby and her potty mouth. Respect and fining her. I explained that it was disrespectful towards others when she talked ”potty”. And if she didn’t care, I did. So I started fining her 25cents each time I heard her use naughty language. And I did. She had to go to her piggy bank every time. My pocket was getting heavy with quarters. She didn’t like it. Then she started to complain that younger sister didn’t get fined and I told her that she was the one who taught baby sister to talk like that. I said if she wanted to stop getting fined, she had to change the way she spoke. If she wanted to earn the quarters back, she had to respectfully encourage little sis to talk differently and she had to help by teaching little sister new, nicer ways to express herself. So far, when I’m around, her language is better. So is little sister’s.
But the mama is angry that I would discipline her kids when she didn’t or wouldn’t. She is also mad at her own mother for supporting my actions. We grannies, were both tired of waiting for the little children to clean up their acts. We were both tired of waiting for the parents to start setting limits. I will add, that other family members (aunties and uncles) were growing tired of telling their own kids that they were not allowed to “talk like that” when the “little girls” could “get away” with using nasty language. We’ll see what happens when I babysit on Saturday.
That’s at my son’s house. The girls pick up their toys at my house because I require it. In fact if I go to my son’s house they start picking up their toys as soon as they see me 😁 My son starts picking up too. Gives me a complex, here comes grandma bitch 😮
My youngest daughter is a different story. She cloisters herself in her room when she’s home, except at dinner 🙄 I understand she wants to yap with her friends, doesn’t want to be bothered with her nieces. It’s summer so she’s home all day. In a few weeks school starts and she’ll be gone most of the day……and real soon she’ll be out on her own 😎
Thankfully I have hubby trained, with the exception of tools. So I know if I request a honey do, I’m cleaning up the mess 😉 It took TEN years of marriage for him to figure out what the dirty clothes hamper was for 🙄 Even to this day, sometimes opening the lid is too much for him, so he just puts his dirty laundry on top 🙄 But he’s a good egg, so I think I’ll keep him 😉
Oh my Leslie, I had no idea. I don’t have those kinds of problems with my grandbabies. All in all, honestly they’re good kids. What’s more they are generally little angels when I take them somewhere. My brother accused me of drugging them at our last family night at a restaurant, LOL! The girls sat there quietly coloring their kids menus, my nephews bounced off the walls, LOL! My sister met up with us when she was in town and remarked at how well behaved they were……and then it happened…..my mom actually said something nice about me. My mom quipped that it didn’t surprise her, I was the best parent out of all her children……OMG, I did something right……me….the black sheep!!!
I whine and feel sorry for myself because there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight, I’m pretty much raising 3 more kids even if it is part time. However, in some respects I’m lucky. I don’t deal with power struggles, my son takes any suggestion or advice I give him to heart when it comes to his daughters. He respects my years of parenting knowledge and tells me so often. He wants his girls to have a childhood as similar to his as he can provide……that’s a pretty good compliment. If baby mama had stuck around who knows. She insisted that her kids were never to hear the word “no”, it’s too upsetting, blah, blah. Who knows if they ever heard no from her, she didn’t say much of anything to them, worthless bitch.
I know you don’t want to tangle with your DIL, but part of her job as a parent is to raise kids that can function in society. To raise them to be responsible adults. Who wants to hire a potty mouth? Who wants to date or marry someone like that? Limits are a part of life, so is self control. I seriously doubt your DIL runs around dropping F bombs. She needs to think about that……but I know things are touch and go and what her response was to her own mother over legitimate concerns. You must have ulcers from holding so much in, definitely holes in your tongue from biting it. If it is any consolation, I think you were correct. Your grandchild had to learn to use appropriate language……btw did she talk like that at school?
You know, these two little girls are really “good kids”. In fact, the older one first picked up the language at pre-school and now at her current school she’s learned quite a bit more. I think the purpose of using”those words” was to shock. So naturally, we all ignored it. But potty mouth is not only disrespectful, it is “fun” and so she persisted. . . teaching the 4y/o along the way. I’m not certain if she uses this language at school. But someone must, because she has brought new words home since last fall when she began 1st grade.
The greatest problem, imho, is that the parents want to be friends with the girls. So that leaves the grannies to be the limit setters whether we want to be or not. I can see some problems arising these days because the parents are becoming frustrated when they tell the girls what to do and the girls continue doing whatever they please.
Btw, there are days when my jaw hurts from holding in my thoughts. I never bring up the issue with my co-granny, but happily, she brings them up with me. Sometimes I think she and I share a brain. lol
Your son is wise to take your advice. Plus, he also sees that his little ones behave (for the most part) around you. And he knows it’s so much less frustrating when their behavior reflects consistent messaging. He may not have realized how much work it is to be consistent with children. I think my son and DIL thought winning the girls’ friendship would result in what it takes limit setting and active parenting. smh
