Sunday Open Thread

Nothing like waking up and seeing one of your “kids” in the headlines. Here’s a fresh new post, have a beautiful day !

P.S. Chris is a sweet boy so he shouldn’t hurt anybody, unless you get in his way 😀

    Sweet justice 😀

    • lateblum says:

Not sweet enough. He picked on, harassed, bullied and beat a sick (schizophrenia) and disabled teenager and empowered 4 others to join in. The kid never had a chance. You don’t do that to any person and get a slap on the wrist. I don’t care if it was 8 years…. he’ll never serve that long and most likely will go out and do something else once he is on the streets again.
Plus, the others who joined in got nothing iirc.

      • DeniseVB says:

Maybe the justice will be “sweeter” while he’s in prison 😉 I kinda forgot about this, I figured they all got a slap on the wrist and walked because, ya know, Black Lives Matter too, heh.

I just found out that yesterday someone hacked into my WiFi and downloaded copyrighted material and now I’m being “charged with” copyright infringement. I just spent the last 30 minutes on the phone trying to figure out what happened and how to “clear” myself of this so I don’t lose internet “privileges” in the future. I wasn’t even at home or online when this supposedly occurred. So I cannot even prove I am innocent of these “charges”. The first person I spoke with I could barely understand and then the call was dropped or he dropped my call when I sought assistance in finding out what I supposedly downloaded. The second person was much nicer and even found out what material I was charged with “downloading”.
I hate this internet/cable/WiFi stuff. It makes me nuts that people feel free to steal and walk away without any penalty and leaving innocent people to be seen a guilty. I am seething right now.
Have a great day everyone. I’ve got stuff to do on this end that may take me forever to figure out.

    • lyn says:

WTH? Holler if you need anything, lateblum.

    • DeniseVB says:

Don’t you just feel “violated” ? 😦 I’m pretty tech challenged, but I know when I’m connecting via a Wi-Fi hotspot, several accounts come up, I’ve clicked on them thinking I can avoid paying for one, but they always were password protected. I’m a failure as a cyber-criminal. When we had a new router installed to Verizon tech gave us 27-character password. Heaven help me if I can’t find it when trying to connect a new laptop.

      • lateblum says:

Yes, I do indeed, feel violated. It is nearly the same a# when my wallet/credit cards was stolen out of my purse a few years ago. The funny thing is that I FINALLY learned/memorized the absurd and lengthy password and now I had to change it. Ughhhhh. At one time I thought of having the old one tattooed on my thigh, but all the veins got in the way. lol.

        • taw46 says:

Think of a sentence you will remember, then use the first letter of each word. That’s what I do. Something like ‘ I was a Democrat until they lost their fu** ing minds.’ LOL. Password would be – iwadutltfm. Sometimes you have to add a character or a number. Like an !

          • lateblum says:

            Great password!

          • Myiq2xu™ says:

I keep my passwords on a post-it note stuck to the bottom edge of my monitor so I can find it when I need it. My son the former hacker/current cybersecurity specialist finally convinced me to stop using “password” as a password.

      • Somebody says:

Our new password is like that, 😲. If anybody breaks in they’ll find it posted in my office. I suppose I could be clever and hide it somewhere, but then I’d forget where I hid it 🙄

    • blowme0bama says:

Are you sure it wasn’t a scam? Over the years I’ve gotten maybe a couple of calls where some Indian or Paki was telling me my computer was doing some bullshit and I had to get him to help me fix it.

      • taw46 says:

Just getting ready to ask the same question. Did someone call you, supposedly from your provider? Or did you contact the provider directly?

        • lateblum says:

Actually the notification came in a “letter” via email from my provider and I verified it with a phone call to my provider. Well, maybe I ought to have done it differently, because I called the number in the letter. 😯 maybe I ought to call my “local” cable number.

      • lateblum says:

I checked it out. Not a scam. It was a legitimate theft of my WiFi. The letter was clear and from my cable/internet provider. I just now changed the modem password and whatever else I had to change. I did not go through the provider to make the changes as the modem/router is my private device and not serviced by the cable company. The second person verified the material that was downloaded -when I wasn’t home and did not even have my computer/tablet in use. I’m not going to put my pc into sleep mode any more, though. I’ll just shut it off and turn it back on when I need it in the future.

        • taw46 says:

So sorry. At least you know it isn’t a scam. I hope that it is all secure now. From what I understand, the person has to be close by to get on your WiFi. So, either a neighbor (ugh) or someone parked outside.

          • Propertius says:

Not necessarily. Many consumer-grade routers can be vulnerable to remote attack over the internet, depending on what you’ve done (or not done) with the router settings.

        • Propertius says:

Have you updated the firmware in your router? There are a couple of really nasty security holes in the authentication protocols used by WiFi routers that have surfaced over the last couple of years. For an example, see: https://www.popsci.com/kracks-wifi-problem

There are also vulnerabilities in the router firmware itself that make the routers susceptible to attack. Did you just change the WPA2 (wireless) password or have you changed the administrator password to the router itself? Most consumer routers ship with a really stupid, predefined administrator login and password, like “admin” and “password”. Changing that is probably the first thing you should do when you take the damned thing out of the box. If your router was compromised, it may be running malware all by itself. The latest such vulnerability to be publicized is: https://www.wired.com/story/vpnfilter-router-malware-outbreak/.

Several popular brands of routers have other known security flaws. Some of them appear to be intentional backdoors.

          • lateblum says:

Ok. Now I’m officially terrified. I haven’t done any of those things —- changing administrator login and password. When I tried to do that when I first took “the damned thing out of the box”, it wasn’t permitted. Maybe I should change more than the passwords, huh?
I’ll check out the links you posted. I have a feeling I will be completely overwhelmed by what I see. I wonder if I ought to get (yet another) modem/router.
Is it better to have 2 separate devices? a modem as well as a router? Right now, I do not.

Thank you for responding with such detailed information, Prop(ertius). You probably helped inform more than just me. (But you have successfully scared the cr*p out of me.)

          • Propertius says:

I disabled the router in my Comcast cable modem when I got it and use my own. That way I know it’s updated. Nearly all major router manufacturers have released firmware updates to thwart the VPNfilter attack or the WPA2 vulnerability i mentioned above, for example. But if you never update the router that doesn’t help. VPNfilter is particularly nasty – it’s quite complex and was apparently developed by professional state actors (probably Russian but possibly Chinese). More on that: https://www.cnet.com/news/the-fbi-wants-you-to-reboot-your-router-now-to-help-destroy-a-botnet/

The problem is daunting – a lot of the convenience features that make home networks much easier to set up than they used to be (like WPS or various remote access features) also make them less secure. It’s really tempting to treat your router as just another appliance, but it’s a computer. It runs software that can have bugs and those bugs can be exploited.

You don’t need to be terrified, but you do need to be careful. It would be nice to live in a world where we could leave our doors unlocked or leave the keys in the ignition when we park our cars, but we don’t. This isn’t any different.

          • lateblum says:

So the modem and the router are one piece. I own them…Comcast does not. I have not updated the firmware for the modem/router. I’m looking up when I got the modem now. It’s fairly recent. Do I go to the support page of the manufacturer to look for firmware updates? I frankly was unaware that an update was needed, until you mentioned it.
So now, I just attempted to turn on my computer and received a message that my computer was not connected to the internet! I only shut it down a few minutes ago after being on the phone with Comcast for over 2 1/2 hours. Not my day…
Thanks for all your follow ups with me. At this point, I’m a hot mess. 😭

That makes no sense. How does one download copyrighted material? If it’s copyrighted and you don’t want people downloading it, why is it on the net?
And if it is copyrighted and downloadable for a fee, with legal agreements to not reproduce it, what’s the violation if you agree and download it?
Unless someone downloaded with an agreement in your name, and then freely redistributed it.
In that case, it’s fraud, identity theft, copyright violation, etc.
Call the cops and the FBI.

This is from 2013, but scammers are known to revive them. We got the famous Microsoft scam-boggie-woogie, so I just punched in some keywords on a scam search, which is what I do now on any “threatening” emails or phone calls….this might be helpful ?

            https://guides.yoosecurity.com/comcast-copyright-infringement-fines-scam-removal/

Sometimes my skepticism bites me back. Last year, for months, AOL GOLD kept sending me better upgrade now or else emails and when the deadline arrived, I had no AOL at all. Found out, it wasn’t a scam after all.

          • lateblum says:

Thanks Denise. It turns out it isn’t a scam. But I now have bigger problems with my computer and possibly the smart TVs as well since they are connected to my internet. I have been on the phone this evening with 4 different technicians and they are now telling me to take my computer in to a “PC doctor”. Because they were unable to help clear up this mess. I am frustrated to tears and beyond with all this.

          • John Denney says:

I did a search for “starz-entertainment copyright infringement” and found this.

            https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/help-i-was-sent-a-copyright-infringement-notice-from-isp-536891/

Lots there. Mostly it boils down to:
            1) Someone in your household downloaded it and is keeping mum.
            2) Someone in your household gave out your wifi password to someone who downloaded it.
            3) Your wifi has no password and some stranger downloaded it.

          • lateblum says:

Gosh, thank you for taking the time to do this. Sadly, none of those three possible causes is even remotely true. There is no “other” in my household, no one else knows my passwords, and all my WiFi connections are locked with a bizarre password. But I’ve even changed t hose passwords so that I had to then change access to the devices that use WiFi.
I am so very grateful to you and everyone else putting so much time and effort into this problem. I spent the greater parts of yesterday/Sunday either on the phone or on the computer trying to resolve this nonsense. I had 4 different Comcast “tech agents” during my last 3hours on the phone trying to help. I think I need to get a roommate who can fix these kinds of issues.
Just thinking about yesterday and the upcoming IT storm I’m about to face is leaving me feeling quite overwhelmed.
I did give up a few minutes to go outside and eat a bagel in the back yard, but most of my time was spent trying to work on this issue.
            Thank you again.

    • votermom says:

      lateblum, how awful!

  30. Lulu says:

I think Theresa May is done. May knew she had a potential rebellion building over her wretched Brexit plan. She was fixated on Boris Johnson and David Gove, current ministers who she beat for the PM job, and bullied both of them at her Checquers meeting Friday night. Both agreed to her swampy plan rather than resigning which she demanded if ANY minister voted against it. Then she went into overdrive saying all agreed and everything was grand. Davis, THE Brexit minister, rather than be sacked on the spot, left and waited 48 hours then QUIT, absolutely killing her PR campaign, and two junior Brexit ministers did also because of how awful May is along with her giving in to all of the EU demands for a fake Brexit in name only.

Monday night was to be PM May selling it or trying to do so to the Tory backbenchers of her own party. Davis cut her legs out from under her by quitting and saying her plan is simply selling out the country. Rebel backbencher and arch-Brexiteer Jacob Rhys-Mogg is on the war-path. If 48 Tories write letters to the Parliment demanding a vote of no-confidence a vote will be held to decide if they throw her over as PM. This is extremely dangerous to her authority and may come up throwing her out.

May miscalculated all of it. She was fixated on her main rivals from the PM leadership vote Gove and Johnson, sniping at Farage and President Trump, and pleasing the EU leadership. There is a reasonable chance she won’t even be PM by the time Trump arrives. She set up her own ministers at her Checquers meeting and they are furious. She has very wiley Jacob Rhys-Mogg and a group of Brexit backbenchers in revolt, and a US president who openly dislikes her (for many, many good reasons) ready to fly in to the mayhem laughing, and meet with a new PM if that happens. All during championship games in a World Cup which she had dissed because they were held in Russia and forbade any government (or dopey royals) from attending.

I’m not sure what else can go wrong for May but I’m sure it will be something. This is what happens if you land on President Trump’s shit list. And we think we have bedlam in DC. I think Westminster has us beat this week.

The story behind the rescue is remarkable. Only a few of their special forces team are small enough to go through the pinch points of those caverns. So they have to do it over and over and over to get the boys out. The bravery, physicality, grit of those men is amazing.
