A lot of the people I deal with think this way here in swampland. The worst reactions are for those in apparently stable family units with mom/dad/kids and especially if Mom does not work. Really bad if they also live in a “nice” neighborhood. Because one should always equate the ability to do fine on one income and residential location with knowing that there is an implied limit of two per household and real women never chose to be at home with kids.
A friend from swampland once told me that the au pair is of far greater need than anyone else in their life.
The au pairs are really treated badly by many. The basically work 24/7/365. Some are never paid with money but told room and board are enough. And the room and board are – well Dickens would have a field day.
You aren’t kidding. They search for the most hardup people to work as indentured servants. It’s gross, but then again they don’t treat their spouses with much more tenderness either. So we all pray that those nannies are teaching their spawn to be nice. In all fairness, those children will someday be tasked with caring for their parents…I’m not sure that anyone wants their children in charge of their meds, diaper changes, banking, etc. but they all meetup with karma in the end.
Where do you find such au pairs?
I thought an au pair was the perfect answer for my son and to be honest for me too. When I checked it out the cost is more than daycare. It cost just over $10,000 for visas and fees. You then pay them $200 per week technically it’s $197.85. You must provide a car, insurance for car, health insurance, $500 per year toward classes, 2 weeks paid vacation and roundtrip airfare home once per year. The visas and fees are required yearly.
Yearly cost is $22,000 plus whatever the insurance cost is AND they are only allowed to work 47 hours per week. Taking into account his commute my son would need someone 53-55 hours per week. In another year when the youngest goes to school he’d be under the 47 hours, but by then why pay that much for 2 hours in the afternoon. It would be nice if he hired someone when they’re all in school……but I doubt it. After school care here is $95 per week, per child maximum amount of time is 3 hours and 15 minutes, unreal. My son only needs 2 hours.
Well people who go the legit route do indeed pay high fees. But here in swampland a lot of the au pairs are faux pairs and not through — regular channels –but people still call them au pairs because it sounds good . since you rarely see them unless you have an inkling they know you will assume they have done things properly. The child care workers are really often not more than indentured servants often without papers or their papers are “held”. Also, this area had a larger population from other countries that are well to do. Quasi diplomatic staff, children of foreign elites. . . many of whom arrive with their own servants that are often poor relatives or those families gave up to pay a debt. The kids are the ones who usually let the cat out of the bag because they do not realize parental units have put up a false front. Or adults who think they are in a safe space. I have a neighbors that work with a church group that tries to help . This is one of the reasons they are so upset at PT. There is so much crap going on and many people who live here either work to make connection s to access such networks to get some of the perks or pretend it could not possible exist in such a well educated area. Had another neighbor who worked to get Muslim girls who had been sold out really unpleasant situations. They often needed surgery as they would have broken noses and jaws and worse so the men would not find them attractive.
Seriously where do you find them? All the places I’ve seen are as described above.
My son has a nice bonus room over his 2 car garage. It’s the only room upstairs, very private. Private bathroom up there, 2 walk in closets, full bedroom set, table and chairs and TV. It’s perfect for an au pair. If the au pair cooked and cleaned too, my son and I would kiss her ass and treat her like gold.
It is modern day slavery.

This afternoon, the MIL was stopped at a light/intersection near her home when a male, standing in the road, came up to her window and said something about car trouble. Her Pit Bull raised his head to check out the situation, the guy took off running. BTW, two weeks ago, a 71 y/o woman was car jacked two miles from the MIL’s house. She was found dead in a ditch several days later and her car found burned 50 miles away.
Maybe MIL should call the police and relate her experience to them. She might provide some kind of description to them.
Second that. It’s also why women should travel with their dogs. Except when it’s hot, and I would have to leave her in the car, Ellie goes everywhere with me. She only looks like a goofball.
