Leslie the Haier A/C is available from Target’s website, if you have a red card you save 5% and get free shipping. If you don’t it is still free shipping to the store. Wal-Mart also carries it, as does Amazon.

THANK YOU, Somebody! I think online shopping is probably they way to go.
I just got back from going to Best Buy and Home Depot – to no avail. I was looking for the Holmes fan that Mt Laurel recommended – it is unavailable online, and after contacting “help” and being told they are ‘out of stock’, I went looking for it. I was at Walmart and ?target yesterday and I’m no longer going to drive any more in this nasty, humid, August weather. I’ll go back to the websites.

      • Somebody says:

I don’t know who has the best price, especially because I don’t know what BTU you are looking for……but hopefully you’ll find it somewhere and have it at your door in a couple of days!

        • lateblum says:

I hope so, too. And by that time,dd#1s will be back from her new job in Seattle for the weekend and she can help me install it. It’ll give me a reason to insist she come over for a few minutes.

          • Somebody says:

If I remember correctly it comes with a small amount of strip foam for sealing any gaps, but we ended up buying more because my son’s window was rather large. It’s the insulation like you put around doors and windows it comes in different thicknesses, weather stripping kind of stuff. You’ll see when you open the box, we bought some more just like that at Home Depot.

          • lateblum says:

I have tons of the foam for sealing gaps, etc. all widths, lengths and sizes. My windows are 2” wider than all the A/C specs state. It’s a 114 yo building with amazing vintage features. But it’s a bugger to maintain.

          • lateblum says:

My dd#1 always makes fun of me for having all that foam and weather stripping. She doesn’t know what it’s like to be unable to find it anywhere nearby when you need it. I remember what that was like and it was nearly impossible to install the A/C because of the gaps and no weather stripping. I literally had to piece foam strips one on top of the other to make the unit fit in the windows.

I just put one in my Target “shopping cart”. It seems the new Target in downtown has some in stock. I’m going there tomorrow to check it out. I never even think of going to the new, downtown Target. that’s how new it is. I think they opened a few months ago in early spring. Perhaps no one else thinks of going there either and that’s why they actually have stock. ❤

      • Mt.Laurel says:

That Holmes fan It is out of stock just about everywhere. I found it here at New Egg but it is more than Holmes site or what I have paid at Home Depot but not as big a ripoff as ebay and amazon third parties.

I laughed when I saw you mention sing box fans to pull the cooler air through the unit. I have two stationed to bring in the air from the foyer and the hallway off the bedroom. The cats sit in front of them – letting me know when I arrive home they want some cool air.

        • Constance says:

I have 4 of these Holmes fans and love them! They are great and I love the timer. I do have a heat pump but most nights in Seattle all I need is my Holmes fan in the window.

      • Mt.Laurel says:

so as not to have multiple links in one comment:

also found it here for a bit less:

        • lateblum says:

How do you even know about these stores? I’ve never heard of either.
          Thank you.

          • Mt.Laurel says:

New egg is the makeover/ regroup of the old Egghead software stores that I still miss. I have gotten replacement parts for laptops there that are hard to find elsewhere.

The office one I have not used but know a couple local small businesses that use them for supplies. They have brick and mortar warehouses in some locations and expanded online.

There were several third parties on amazon but their prices start at a higher point. you might want to check back because amazon usually carries it but it comes and goes as an amazon item as stock moves in and out. On day it is not there next day it is back I. Stock. They match the price at Home Depot and the Holmes site. I have bought a couple as gifts for aunties in assisted living. There is air but because so many elderly are always cold it is set higher and does not cycle on And off enough for those seeking a bit more cool 😎 air.

          • lateblum says:

Thanks, ML. I plan to check back because the chat “help” person said it was out of stock, not out of production. And yes. I saw some of those third party amazon sellers. they had prices of over $100 for a $35 -$40 item. You’d think those were made of gold. lol

      • Venus E. Lee says:

Have you considered a standing water a/c unit? Window install isn’t needed — fill resevoir with water & plug in.

        • lateblum says:

Thanks! I had just seen them online recently. It is an interesting concept. From what I read, they are recommended in dry climates. The humidity here has been pretty high; it’s 97% per the current weather report. No wonder I’m having a hard time breathing.

          • Venus E. Lee says:

oh damn sorry. I was looking for something without a window install for you that wasn’t super expensive like those ductless ones — we have those in our house in Greece & they are awesome but pricey ex:

          • lateblum says:

A house in Greece! You have great taste in where to live… 🌞 I’ll give these a look. Thank you.

          • lateblum says:

You know what? I have looked at these. The condo board said “no way” whatever outdoor equipment this requires, is not permitted outside MY unit because of where it is located in the building. There are 3 of us and the third floor has central air since the condenser sits on the roof. I’m on the first floor and nothing but landscaping can go on the ground. Same reason I cannot have more than one window A/C … my entire unit’ windows are on the street side of the building. I had to lobby – hard – after all those deaths from heat in Chicago in 1995, for permission to have that one A/C in s window. One time, when it was soooo hot, I put a second unit in an additional window and got a phone call the next morning with a threat of a $25/day (with increases in the fine) if I didn’t remove the AC pronto. If I could afford to move, I would. But especially now, there’s not a chance.

          • Anthony says:

Have you considered a portable air conditioner? All that goes in the window is a vent device that doesn’t protrude outside the building. Might be a good solution.

          • lateblum says:

Thanks, ?Anthony. Yes. I already have 2 of them. They work, but are noisy as anything. I’d get another one, but there isn’t enough open space in my bedroom for another one. The unit itself doesn’t take up too much space, but the vent hose requires space so it doesn’t crimp or have sharp bends in it. It’s like a dryer vent hose, but not as supple. So it doesn’t work in tight spaces. Of course if I removed the bed . . . 😉

          • Somebody says:

OK Leslie, I have an idea but you’ll probably need to hire someone.

If you are allowed to have 1 window unit A/C, can you get one big enough to cool your entire apartment? Will one that size fit in the window?

If it will then take a look at inline fans, you’ll want a really big one and a quiet one. Might I suggest you consider waiting until October when the AC Infinity Cloudline 10 inch becomes available.

Next question, do you have crawlspace above your condo and if so how much. This is the plan and it’s something people do for a variety of reasons……to balance out hot and cold spots with their HVAC or to push air around spaces from a mini-split or like me for a smoking filtration system or yes for pot growers. For your situation there might be a better fan option because the inline fans are good at sucking but not necessarily at blowing.

You could also get a small air handler. The point being you place the air return as close to the window unit as you can and crank the window unit wide open. So then the air return sucks up the cool air and then distributes it to vents in the other rooms (you need the crawlspace for ducts….unless you like the industrial look). Take the time to investigate the inline fans or a small air handler if you have a closet you could tuck it in. A small air handler would actually work the best. An air handler is the part of an HVAC system that is inside and blows the air through the ducts. You probably don’t need a very big one and thankfully they’ve been getting smaller and smaller in recent years…..if you put ducts in.

It’s not a perfect solution, but I assure you it works. I’ve lived in set ups like that, my parents outfitted two rentals in that manner when I was a kid. The first house hubby and I bought the jackasses took the outside compressor of our HVAC, they trashed the whole house actually…..long story that includes really bad legal advise. Anyway we had to do that, until we could afford a new compressor. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked and ceiling fans REALLY helped out too…..also it helps that cool air sinks.

          • lateblum says:

My head is spinning – not unlike the ceiling fans. I’m going to copy this to the IPad Notes so I can read it again later. Thanks for giving this so much thought.

          • lateblum says:

Also, I’m considering the idea of putting ceiling fans in a couple rooms here. I know they are effective.

  9. Somebody says:

Jadzia, this is in response to your humidity and musty issues. If you can afford a mini-split, even a really small one like a 1/2 ton that would take care of your problem. Most of them have just a dehumidify option or you can heat or cool it. They are extremely energy efficient. If not you could just use a dehumidifier or use a big container of damprid or similar.

For the odor, you could go low tech with some charcoal bags. The bigger the better. You could inch it up from there with an air purifier, a small one would do. You could go more high tech and use a large carbon bottle filter with a fan. Here is one, but there are oodles of choices

Amazon sells one strictly for odor control that has a pouch of charcoal in it. I’m not sure how effective that would be for the $$. The rule with charcoal is the more the better, go big or stay home. The fans can be a bit noisy, so if this area is truly in the middle of your house, I would opt for a quieter fan. Check out the A/C infinity cloudline, it has one of the lowest operating noises. Also, hyperfan stealth. The secret to any of them is to oversize so you never run the fan at full speed, all fans are quieter at their lower speeds. The charcoal filters and fans are available at a variety of places. Provided you don’t mind it being visible in the room you can put together a nice set up relatively cheap. If you want to hide the whole thing in the crawl space or attic then the cost goes up because of the filter…….you have to get a Phresh inline with an opening at each end and they are pricey.

Charcoal bags work, especially if you put a lot of large ones in the room……BUT they have a limited life AND you have to sun them for a minimum of an hour on each side once a month. Another thing to know about them if the room gets hot and they get hot they will release the smell back into the room…..I found that out the hard way.

    • Somebody says:

Jadzia, I should really add…..if you go hunting around looking at carbon filters and inline fans you will quickly find out they are mostly used by pot growers trying to mask the smell of their plants. If you hunt around you’ll find some people use them for smoking rooms (that’s what I’m in the process of doing) and several people use small ones over their cat litter boxes to eliminate odor.

However, the vast majority of information out there is via pot growers, so be forewarned.

    • Jadzia says:

Thank you! I am dumping this whole thing into a Word document so that I don’t lose it!

I was trying to find an old VHS tape, so I could tape a program (yes, I still do that), and I found one with a “500 Questions” show, that was a stimulating quiz show, short-lived. So I didn’t want to tape over that, and then next on the tape was a clip of Hillary speaking after winning a bunch of primaries in 2016. And there she is, talking in a sincere way about creating jobs, helping with college tuition. It was moving and depressing to see this again. I think that Hillary has always been a very decent person, always caring. I don’t think she ever did anything corrupt in her life. She was Senator from New York for eight years; and if you are in NY, they find out everything about you, whether you are Spitzer or D’Amato. And there wasn’t a whiff of a scandal regarding Hillary, and she was about 70% in favorables there. And she was a popular Secretary of State, as long as the Republicans were not worrying about her running for President again. But then of course the right-wing machine which has been dominating this country since the late ’60’s, got back into action, and they created this ludicrous demonization of Hillary, as evil, corrupt, some combination of the worst aspects of Medea and the Witch of the West. And it is all false, all a projection.

Last but not least, the GOPe was telling all the professional campaign people that if they worked for Trump they would never get hired by any GOP again.

Manafort was/is an insiders’ insider. And very crafty. Slick as snot too. Gates was Manafort’s thug and gopher. He used him to do nasty shit he didn’t want to touch. Manafort probably knew he was stealing from him, had a girlfriend and had it in his back pocket to control him if necessary. And that is exactly what Manafort’s defense attorney is doing in making his “testimony” worthless. And the Ukranians didn’t want the money directly connected to THEM as paying it was probably illegal for THEM thus the banking weirdness. So… wait for Manafort’s witnesses. This is why Manafort wasn’t charged before. Too risky to uncover what goes on as normal business practices in DC. And Mulehead has kicked over a hornets nest.

She has world-class bewbs though. With a rack like that she don’t have to be smart.

Yes, I know I’m bad. I’ll go sit in the corner as a time-out.

(Guess what I’m gonna be thinking about during my time-out?)

        • Lulu says:

She also got a Netflix “show” after her “very sudden” and inexplicably ignorant political activism. Netflix is the new “kickback” vehicle. How very interesting. Bronco and Mooch and now Dumbo. Who else? Go out and do the Proggy propaganda thing and get a show! And some checks! How conveeeenient.

    • Myiq2xu™ says:

And just like that, I can’t think of anything bad to say about her.

      • Lulu says:

She’s 45. She has to use’em while they are still above her waist. And she suddenly became politically aware (LOL) and active just about the time a Netflix show was in “development” that she wanted/needed to do for money. She is dumb but not that dumb.

Wow…how much more clear can it be??? I caught an interview with a woman voting in Ohio and she said she was an angry republican because Trump has embarrassed us so badly – no doubt she voted for Kasich too. • Lulu says:

Those “Repubs” are lying. Form over substance is not a political argument. It is a social herd thing. Women who claim to want nicey-nice over a booming economy, good jobs for those less fortunate than they are, fewer wars, etc are conflict adverse weinies who have daddy issues. It is horse-shit and an excuse/rationalization for not thinking because they already got theirs.

  40. Lulu says:

“On Tuesday, a day after the Saudi Arabian government announced plans to withdraw all Saudi students from Canadian universities, colleges and other schools in retaliation for Canada’s criticism of the country’s human-rights record, the Islamic kingdom’s main state wheat buying agency told grains exporters it will no longer buy Canadian wheat and barley in its international tenders. Meanwhile, the United States – Canada’s most important ally and largest trade partner – declined to come to the defense of the Canadian government in the growing diplomatic crisis.”

Oh noes! Stab Trump in the back after he leaves the G7 meeting and find out he does REVENGE really, really well without lifting a finger. Karma is a bitch. Live and learn Margaret Jr. You got elections next years dip-shit!

    • Lulu says:

“Halpin said he didn’t want to weigh into the political morass that kicked off the dispute between the two countries.

“It’s had the effect of getting the attention of all our universities and our government,” he said.

It has been estimated that nearly 20,000 Saudi students are studying in Canada and the economic spinoff is significant. Saudi Arabia was the sixth-biggest source of long-term international students in Canada in 2015, with 11,650 studying in Canada, according to a report prepared for Global Affairs.

Long-term foreign students spent an average of $35,100 per year, the report said.

There were also 5,622 shortterm students from Saudi Arabia, according to the report. The report says short-term students spent an average of $900 per week.”

Margaret Jr and his pet snake foreign minister have effectively put their university system in financial crisis. At first they blew it off but now they know the money will not be there. The same will shake out in the Canadian national health service with resident programs (that the NHS was paid to do) ending and Saudi patients (who are paid for also in cash) are withdrawn. Canadians seem surprised that Saudi money is used to subsidize all of their beloved socialists programs like college and “free” healthcare”. Did they think they really pay all the bills for this stuff?

      • Anthony says:

Did Margaret Jr’s eyebrows fly off when he got that news? PM Zoolander decided to #resist at the urging of our has-been former POTUS, and it didn’t even get him a lousy T-shirt

        • Lulu says:

I think he is still in hiding (he takes off August as most Frenchmen do) and his pet snake foreign minister is no longer taking questions since her diversion tactic (hit Saudi Arabia) for her own failure with the NAFTA talks (she is excluded because she pissed everyone off) has gone splat. The reason I am absolutely convinced this whole mess was a diversion for her from the sticky NAFTA mess she made is sensitive diplomacy (such as getting people out of prison) is not done in the most public way possible via Tw@tter, you ask nicely and not with a shaking finger and nose in the air with moralizing hectoring when she doesn’t know the details, and it is done secretly to not humiliate the other party which is exactly what she did. Do not insult KINGS! Especially if you are a piss-ant and take their money to finance your free-shit country. SA sees the Canadians as hypocrites and ignoramuses. And no money for you!

          • Underwhelmed says:

Some people can only ever learn the hard way. They mistakenly thought that Trumps’s response, which was to stand back and say On their own heads be it, meant there would be no consequences for their amateur hour bullshit. Big mistake. Big. Huuuuuge.

          • Kathy says:

She used to appear on MSNBC as the supposedly intellectual one.

        • Lulu says:

“Tweets, which can be only up to a maximum of 280 characters, are not the ideal way to get across one’s point of view, never mind to conduct diplomacy.

Duane Bratt, a political science professor at Calgary’s Mount Royal University, says the Saudis are using Canada as a convenient whipping boy to warn the rest of the world what will happen should other countries consider publicly criticizing the kingdom, which has only recently allowed women to drive.

“The tweet was not aimed at the Saudi government. It was aimed at the Canadian public for political gain. It was not aimed at helping the Badawis,” said Bratt.

“Not only has this backfired in the sense that no action is being taken in what we hope would happen, but the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Canada has just gone down the toilet,” added Bratt.”

The Canadians know what Margaret Jr’s bobo-head did and why.

          • votermom says:

I predict epic grovelling by Margaretita. His bowing will beat BOs.

          • Anthony says:

Convenient whipping boy?? Professor Bratt seems to miss the point that when you insult someone who’s pumping megabucks into your business (or country) they usually take their business elsewhere.

I believe every country is a business masquerading as a nation. Hopefully Margaret Jr will jump off the obama bus and stop biting the hands that feed him, but I doubt he will. He’s really pretty but dumb as all hell. Dim light in his eyes, sweet smile with a hint of drool dripping out of the corner of his mouth, and looking desperately for a male role model. Daddy issues in spades, not unlike Chris “I’ll never be as smart as my father” Wallace. And let’s not forget the infinitely forgettable Luke Russert…

          • Lulu says:

Margaret Jr is stupid. I’ve told both of my sons marry a stupid woman and you’ll have stupid kids. Pierre was bedazzled by the young, stupid, stoned and “no boundaries” Margaret Sr. She didn’t act that way because she was smart or clever. Pierre did the best he could with an idiot son which isn’t much.

          • Anthony says:

Great advice to your sons. I’ll bet they remembered that lol

      • SHV says:

“Long-term foreign students spent an average of $35,100 per year, the report said.”
That includes students from shit holes. I would guess, at a minimum, a Saudi student brings double/triple that amount into the Canadian economy. Total, $1+ billion USD??

        • Lulu says:

That would be tuition. IN CASH. Not loans or third party scholarships.
Now this: “Now the Financial Times has reported that the Saudi central bank and state pension funds have instructed third party asset managers to sell Canadian bonds, stocks and cash. The selling is said to have begun on Tuesday.” They are dumping Canadian assets.

Hubby said he read this morning that there is now a stink over Canadian grain elevators. SA bought them up, scrapped them as they started building new ones to replace the Canadian old ratty ones all from the 1960’s (Canada apparently didn’t spend any money building new ones) and now they will be short storage facilties this fall at harvest. And they were stopping construction on the new ones. Yikes! That is hardball.

          • Lulu says:

“The Saudi central bank and state pension funds have instructed their overseas asset managers to dispose of their Canadian equities, bonds and cash holdings “no matter the cost”, two people with direct knowledge of the orders said.
“This is severe stuff,” said one banker.”

            No shit. LOL.

          • SHV says:

The financial moves by KSA seem to be balls to the wall, at first impression out of proportion and not easily reversed. I’m not aware that KSA is asking Canada for anything so this isn’t a negotiating ploy. IMO, the KSA monarchy is playing a dangerous and potentially fatal social re-adjustment and along come Chrystia and Trudope doing SJW shit with KSA internal politics and big picture Shia/Sunni shit. Canada has no leverage and KSA is making an example here. This is the diplomatic equivalent of a Friday, after prayers, public decapitation.

          • Lulu says:

And….”Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said on Wednesday there is “nothing to mediate” in the kingdom’s escalating diplomatic dispute with Canada, and Ottawa knew what it needed to do to “fix its big mistake”.

The kingdom was considering implementing additional measures against Canada, said Adel al-Jubeir, speaking at a press conference in Riyadh. He did not elaborate.”

That’s it. They are liquidating and out. The coup de grâce. Now Canada needs to stop virtue signalling all their “values” as a diversion from all their own failures.

          • elliesmom says:

Half my family is Canadian. I’ve spent a lot of summers there as a kid, and my southern US family is much nicer and more polite. As John Wayne said, before Leroy Jethro Gibbs was even on the radar, “Don’t ever apologize. It’s a sign on weakness.” Those southern ladies are real steel magnolias, and the Canadian women in my family are lily-livered. My grandfather took my grandmother away because he wanted to live where people are strong-willed. Born in the US while his parents were vacationing, he never considered himself Canadian. There’s a lot of Canadian virtue signaling on FB, and most of it is laughable.

No. Cruz is playing the turnout game. And Texas wants a Trump rally! Maybe two! Cruz LIKES being the underdog and pretends he is even when he isn’t. He did that in his court cases too. He gets all mean and fiesty. BEAT-O is a nitwit and says dumb shit daily. Cruz DOES need a big turnout to whip BEAT-O’s ass bigly.

He is the reason that the vets have to go thru a third party to get outside care. Lots of money into those coffers. Just like rhino McStain (placed on that board) to ensure that this third party got a monstrous contract to play nanny state for all these vets that cried to Beto for help. The left wing msm promotes all stories about this phony named Beto. He is not Hispanic and he was born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. So full of myself right now. I read upthread. My pejorative for the Kenyan is similar to the inimitable Lulu saying Margaret Jr. Using humor against them. How alinsky.
Reminds me of sitting at the dentist on the 100th anniversary of Faulkner’s birth.
The night before I was working at Joe Allen. Morgan Freeman who I had been servingvdrinks for a few hours asked me what I did for a living. I said I write and what do you do Mr FAIRCHILD. He laughed.
Well the storyvin NewvYork Times had Cary Grant walking in a park with Faulkner. Grant so enamored of himself yet deigned to ask Faulkner whatvhe did. William Faulkner said I write and what is it that you do.
I had responded to a rude slight as one of the deepest writer’s did. Stuff like that makes me happy. I am no Faulkner or Lulu but when it can’t be avoided I perspire to greatness.
