One of my favorite places to take a walk in Boston is along the harbor in Christopher Columbus Park. It borders the North End, which is the Italian neighborhood. The smell of the food mixing with the salt air is what Boston smells like to me. After Elliesdad and I had chaperoned a senior prom at a nearby hotel, we took a walk in the park and watched the sunrise. He says it’s his favorite prom memory ever. Of course, when we got home, our kids laid into us for staying out all night.

  5. Dora says:

That’s the best picture of the Columbus Circle statue I’ve ever seen.

I wonder if it was taken from a drone.

It’s certainly a better view that one gets by looking upward from the ground level.

    Happy Columbus Day!

It’s raining on Long Island today, so it will probably rain on our parade.

    • DeniseVB says:

I was looking for a Columbus photo for the post, when I saw it, just had to use it ! Wasn’t DiBlasio considering taking it down for the Columbus haters? That would be a crime. 😦

  6. DandyTIger says:

Such a silly protest. The natives that were hear before Columbus didn’t evolve on this land. They weren’t indigenous to the Americas. They immigrated here from Asia. Well, some in turns out also immigrated from Europe over another land bridge. And of course vikings and pacific islanders came and went over the centuries. Of course Columbus and the Europeans that came after definitely changed everything in the Americas. They were so much more advanced that they took over completely in a relatively short amount of time. Not unlike how different empires took over different regions throughout Europe and beyond. It’s what humans do.

    • DeniseVB says:

Weren’t the first humans here about 700 years pre-Columbus? WTF do they have to show for those centuries? I’m always in awe I live in the time that I do and reaping the comforts and discoveries started during the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800s. What took them so long? 😉

      • DandyTIger says:

And since Europeans have been here over 500 years now, when do we get to be “indigenous”?

      • DandyTIger says:

Well, correction. I think the estimates are more like 12,000 years for peoples that came via the Asian land bridge. Not sure what the estimates are from the European land bridge or other immigration waves from pacific islanders or others. Still begs the question, how long do people not naturally from a land (since no one was) get to be called indigenous.

        • elliesmom says:

I’m a native New Englander. I was born here, and there’s no indication I’ve lived anywhere before I was recorded as living here. That makes me indigenous to New England. I might have ancestors who lived somewhere else as does every other person currently living in North America or who has ever lived here. There is no indication North America was a “cradle of civilization”. Anyone born here is as indigenous as anybody else who was born here.

        • DeniseVB says:

I find it so fascinating, so I found a “Schoolhouse Rock” version of a map to wrap my pea brain around. No wonder people thought the world was flat, that pesky little land bridge Sarah could see from her house, heh 🙂 Until Columbus proved it was round by getting lost trying to find a new shipping route to India, hello Americas !

        • John Denney says:

Kinda like the Scots who were given land in Northern Ireland by the British who conquered it. The descendants of those settlers are now called Irish. They happen to be nominally Protestant, as opposed to the original Irish, who were nominally Catholic, who are still trying to recover their property and political power.
But since the Scots descendants are now called Irish, you can’t say it’s Irish against the Scots, so it’s Catholics vs. Protestants, which makes it seem like a religious war, when it’s not.

There is a specter haunting the Hamptons — one that’s turning some of the priciest properties in the country into fortresses equipped with bulletproof glass, weaponry and panic rooms.

“I sleep with a gun underneath my pillow: a Walther PPK/S, the same one James Bond carried,” said John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Group and Gristedes Foods, who has a vacation property in East Quogue. “[My wife] Margo prefers a shotgun. Although, once, she thought she heard something, got the shotgun out and shot through the door.”

    • Miranda says:

Sounds like John should worry about Margo. You don’t fire blindly through a door because you ‘hear something’.

    • Mothy67 says:

Where do these animals live? When i lived out on the island there was nothing even close to affordable. Brentwood and parts of Central Islip were the only run down areas. Public transportation after 7 is nonexistent. A starter home was a cool 750,000. This was 20 years ago. They were always fighting about building affordable housing. Did they and is this the result?

    Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers.

    • Mt.Laurel says:

I find Hanks look creepy. Too panto by half.
But then I hail from the general area of Mr Rodgers hometown neighborhood. When you have met people, it is odd seeing someone trying to pretend to be them.

      • DeniseVB says:

I always thought Jim Parsons would have made a better Mr. Rogers, more age appropriate for the Mr. Rogers Neighborhood years too.

        • Mt.Laurel says:

Yes. When i was very young Fred had a program on NET (pre PBS) at WQED. The Children’s Corner with Josie Carey. It was a different format but many of the basics for the future “Neighbored” came out of that program. He was around 40 when Mister Rogers Neighborhood premiered.

  20. swanspirit says:

Completely OT! Does anyone else use those handy dandy rotisserie chickens, for other meals? I just bought two refrigerated ones yesterday, that were one day old, marked down to $3.67 apiece.

So I made a huge bowl of chicken salad from the breasts, saved the legs and thighs to heat up with mashed potatoes and a veggie, and saved the rest for making homemade stock, for making soup, So that is at least 4+ meals for about $10.00 counting celery, onion, mayo, sides etc Am feeling very thrifty!

    • lateblum says:

Those rotisserie chickens have saved me on more than on occasion. Convenient plus tasty! In fact I’m getting one for Friday when my sister comes into town. She likes them, too.

    • driguana says:

Use them frequently…make great curry…let the curry cook for a long time and then add the already cooked chicken at the last moment!!

    • Constance says:

I use them all the time too but didn’t realize they got marked down early mornings! I’m not much of a morning person since I retired, I do still get up early but my coffee, blog reading, phone talking routine has expanded until at least 11am. I guess an early grocery store run is a good idea.

      • swanspirit says:

I didn’t realize that either, until recently. I usually just put mine in the fridge anyway, so why not get a cold one, still fresh, for almost half price!?

        • lateblum says:

At the stores here, they take the left over chickens and cut the meat up and then charge even more the next day. Welcome to the north shore.

    • blowme0bama says:

Yeah, Wifey-poo uses them for everything with chicken in it, other than fried chicken.

    • 1539days says:

It’s almost as easy as fast food.

    • Somebody says:

Definitely use them just as they are with sides or in soups, salads and casseroles.

    • Mt.Laurel says:

Those little birds saved me more than once when my mother was living with me. It is hard to work full time and make good meals that she would find appetizing. She could no longer taste many foods after 90 – a combo of age and medications. She loved the hot chicken with gravy and smashed potatoes. I also made chicken divan and chicken fried rice which were ways I could get her to eat veggies.

    • John Denney says:

      One of our favorites is:

      for each person:
      1 1/2 cups water
      3/8 tspn salt
      3/4 tspn sugar
      soy sauce
garlic, ginger, black pepper, crushed red pepper, thyme, oregano, bay, in various amounts and combinations depending on meat and veg.
      1/4 pound cooked meat
a carrot, a celery rib, a quarter onion, mushrooms, other veggies, whatever strikes your fancy, all cut up into bite size pieces.
      2 oz dry pasta

Bring the water, soy sauce, salt, pepper, etc to a boil and cook the veggies in it.
Cut the meat into bite size pieces and place into a bowl. Use a slotted spoon to remove the veggies from the water and put them on top the meat. Then cook the pasta in the water and put the pasta on top the veggies and pour the broth on top.
Garnish with minced green onion and/or minced bell peppers.

I thought i couldn’t despise dims any more. Aware that it’s a movie and biased.

    • swanspirit says:

I haven’t seen the movie, but I don’t see how the movie could make it worse. It was so bad, at the time. Hasn’t gotten any better over time.

      • Allegra says:

The movie made it seem as if Mary Jo could have been saved if Teddy had called for help right away. I don’t remember being aware of that at the time.

    • lateblum says:

I get you, Tim. When I saw th previews in the theater, I became really angry, too. I wasn’t planning to see it to begin with, but I got so angry during the promos I was even less tempted.

    • elliesmom says:

I didn’t see all that much bias in it, Tim. My dad was a yellow dog Dem, and Chappaquidick crushed him. He was convinced one of the younger Kennedys was actually driving, and Ted took the blame because he knew he could walk away. He wasn’t alone in those thoughts, but nothing about Ted Kennedy says he would have sacrificed his chance to be POTUS for anyone. Of the four Kennedy brothers, Ted was the most shallow. The movie did a good job of pointing that out. The weekend Chappaquidick happened, most of us, even in MA, were focused on the moon landing. In a way, John provided cover for Ted.
