With friends like these…

Trump King Night

That Camille Paglia… In a wide ranging interview featuring trademark acerbic wit, Ms. Paglia lampoons every goddamn contender in the Democrat Party (her party, she insists) and gives Trump a lift.

You’ve been a sharp political prognosticator over the years. So can I start by asking for a prediction. What will happen in 2020 in America? Will Hillary Clinton run again?

If the economy continues strong, Trump will be reelected. The Democrats (my party) have been in chaos since the 2016 election and have no coherent message except Trump hatred. Despite the vast pack of potential candidates, no one yet seems to have the edge. I had high hopes for Kamala Harris, but she missed a huge opportunity to play a moderating, statesmanlike role and has already imprinted an image of herself as a ruthless inquisitor that will make it hard for her to pull voters across party lines.

Screechy Elizabeth Warren has never had a snowball’s chance in hell to appeal beyond upper-middle-class professionals of her glossy stripe. Kirsten Gillibrand is a wobbly mediocrity. Cory Booker has all the gravitas of a cork. Andrew Cuomo is a yapping puppy with a long, muddy bullyboy tail. Both Bernie Sanders (for whom I voted in the 2016 primaries) and Joe Biden (who would have won the election had Obama not cut him off at the knees) are way too old and creaky.

To win in the nation’s broad midsection, the Democratic nominee will need to project steadiness, substance, and warmth. I’ve been looking at Congresswoman Cheri Bustos of Illinois and Governor Steve Bullock of Montana. As for Hillary, she’s pretty much damaged goods, but her perpetual, sniping, pity-me tour shows no signs of abating. She still has a rabidly loyal following, but it’s hard to imagine her winning the nomination again, with her iron grip on the Democratic National Committee now gone. Still, it’s in her best interest to keep the speculation fires burning. Given how thoroughly she has already sabotaged the rising candidates by hogging the media spotlight, I suspect she wants Trump to win again. I don’t see our stumbling, hacking, shop-worn Evita yielding the spotlight willingly to any younger gal.

ACCURATE! Except for that Obama capping Joe Biden thing. She forgets the man’s son was dying the spring of the year he would have declared (2015), and he rightly wondered how such ambition would appear to the electorate if he’d run. Then his son died. Obama might be a bitch and Joe might be unworthy of the presidency, but that wasn’t what ended his presidential ambition at that time.

Nevertheless, I was left ROTFLMAO at descriptors of Kamala Harris as a “ruthless inquisitor” and Cory Booker have the “gravitas of a cork.” But she saved the best critique for HRC, calling her “our stumbling, hacking, shop-worn Evita.” I died. *DED* as the kids say.

That said, Ms. Paglia has cut to the chase on Trump as well.

Has Trump governed erratically?

Yes, that’s a fair description. It’s partly because as a non-politician he arrived in Washington without the battalion of allies, advisors, and party flacks that a senator or governor would normally accumulate on the long road to the White House. Trump’s administration is basically a one-man operation, with him relying on gut instinct and sometimes madcap improvisation. There’s often a gonzo humor to it — not that the US president should be slinging barbs at bottom-feeding celebrities or jackass journalists, much as they may deserve it. It’s like a picaresque novel starring a jaunty rogue who takes to Twitter like Tristram Shandy’s asterisk-strewn diary. Trump’s unpredictability might be giving the nation jitters, but it may have put North Korea, at least, on the back foot.

Most Democrats have wildly underestimated Trump from the get-go. I was certainly surprised at how easily he mowed down 17 other candidates in the GOP primaries. He represents widespread popular dissatisfaction with politics as usual. Both major US parties are in turmoil and metamorphosis, as their various factions war and realign. The mainstream media’s nonstop assault on Trump has certainly backfired by cementing his outsider status. He is basically a pragmatic deal-maker, indifferent to ideology.

Tristram Shandy’s asterisk-strewn diary”????????????????????? Oh, my gawd, such beauty only a critical theorist of the arts would conceive of, or recognize. And true, true, true, and true. I rarely wish I was someone else, but it’s usually when reading Camille Paglia that I do. Read the whole thing here.

It’s a brilliant interview, and an enjoyable read. I think she likes Our President, in spite of her Democratic affiliation. She certainly has no affection for some of her own party members, and her descriptions of them are hilarious.
The only thing that might be funnier, would be POTUS descriptions of the same characters, when he gets around to describing them during the election. Some of these Democrats, who cannot walk and chew gum, are going to be very surprised when POTUS makes short work of them; while also running the country.

    • Constance says:

I baffled that anyone could consider Kirsten Gillibrand Presidential who would want to follow her? And Elizabeth Warren is such a precise, exacting know it all. Then people don’t seem to get the “too old” idea. You need to have a normal amount of energy and health to serve. Hillary couldn’t even get up stairs without looking feeble and knowing she could have easily gotten rid of that problem with 20 mins of daily exercise but didn’t bother was a complete turn off.

      • Woke Lola says:

I think if Hillary tries to run there will be an intervention. But I agree with Paglia 100% that Dems are not making the right moves to win. I guess we’ll see if Beto can make then swoon on the fainting couches.

We had a dinner party Tuesday evening. A friend brought a tray of summer sausage, cheese, and crackers and placed it on the table behind our sofa. The table faces into the dining room. Ellie was snuggled down on the sofa. (Yes, she’s allowed on the furniture.) I saw her put her head up ever so slowly and slip a piece of sausage off the plate. She did it without touching any of the other food so I decided it was in everyone’s best interest if I just moved the plate a bit. My glare seemed to register with Ellie, and she didn’t try again. Yes, our dogs are spoiled. ❤

In recent times, Republican ex-presidents — Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush — left the limelight upon the end of their tenures. They kept silent about their successors, and they allowed history to be the judge of their relative successes or failures. Reagan and the younger Bush often were ensconced on their ranches in out-of-the-way places. Obama would do well to buy a ranch, too.

In contrast, progressive ex-presidents such as Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Obama saw the presidency as a sort of never-ending story. Politics were a 24/7, 360-degree, all-encompassing experience. All envisioned their retirements as opportunities to relitigate their administrations and to politick the present in hopes that future kindred presidencies would be progressive and would continue their own agendas.

a must read. how mueller covered for backtrack in the Michael Flynn case

  61. foxyladi14 says:

Michael Walsh once wrote that Trump has single-handedly revived the “great man” theory of history. He’s correct. But Trump didn’t revive it so much as remind everyone that it never went away. One man can truly make a difference—even in the face of terrible odds. And, if that one man is a force of nature, such as Churchill or Trump, then, no cause is truly lost . . . so long as people are inspired and willing to fight for it.

Our task, going forward then, will be to ensure that enough of us on the Right remain so inspired. We cannot be a movement of quitters.

Coulter and others are operating on the assumption that victory is impossible and losing is inevitable. Yet, true victory goes neither to the swift nor to the bold, but to those who endure terrifying ordeals. The Left knows this—which is why they hate Trump and his deplorables even more. We can endure much. Should we deplorables lose and Trump end up being just one man versus an entire wretched hive of scum and villainy, his example—just as with those who died fighting until the end at Thermopylae and the Alamo—will inspire more to follow in his path. Even in losing, Trump could still win.

So, while the Left certainly has some advantages over us and a willingness to deploy them even to the point of open political warfare, Trump is giving enough Republicans—even Lindsey Graham, at times—the kind of backbone needed to ensure that the “losing cause” of the Right remains, instead, a viable one. And, with a great man leading the movement, perhaps the vision of an America for Americans, who are proud and great again, will be victorious in the end.
