The Problem With Freedom

Stupid people

The problem with freedom is we give it to the wrong people. Stupid people get just as much freedom as smart people. You don’t have to earn it, because some people you never met bought it for you. (If you would like to thank them, you’ll find a lot of them at a place called “Arlington.”) You don’t need to pass a test or demonstrate that you will use your freedom responsibly.

Whether you arrive here at a point of entry or thru your mother’s birth canal, as soon as you arrive it’s like someone greets you and says, “Welcome to America. Here is your freedom along with a bundle of inalienable rights. Have a nice day.”

We even give freedom to people who openly advocate taking our own freedom away.

So why do we give freedom away so willy-nilly? Two reasons:

1. We believe that too much freedom is preferable to not enough.
2. To paraphrase Winson Churchill, it works better than any other system we ever tried.

I do not believe that any foreign enemy will ever succeed in taking out freedom away. If we lose our freedom, we will have done it to ourselves. And if we want to get it back, we’ll have to fill up a few more Arlingtons.

I stopped at Wallyworld after taking Mom to church this morning. I was wearing my red MAGA hat. I had three different people come up to me and say “I like your hat.”

Stuff I wonder about, how old would the Friends’ kids be today? Add two years to this 2017 article, it’s not in a stupid “slide show” format either 🙂 The youngest (Monica and Chandler’s twins) are in high school now, the oldest, Ross’s “Ben” is playing Jughead Jones on that Archie comics show.

Just came from seeing the Oscar nominated short films. Geesh! What a depressing year they represent.
And I have to say why the hell wasn’t the Mr Rogers documentary nominated? What a crock.
Also I loved Melissa McCarthy who was wonderful. Saw her movie last night.
And now… I’m watching the Oscars until I can’t stand it.

I watched the Umbrella Academy on Netflix today. It was good for anyone looking for something to watch. It’s based on graphic novels –super hero story.

I called it in the Feb 20, “American Iconicide” thread, saying, “Watch for calls to rename John Wayne Airport in Orange County, CA, and for his statue there to be defaced or toppled.”

    • lyn says:

They will rename it Jussie Smollett Airport.

    • Island Girl says:

If they change it back to Orange County Airport and leave the statue, I am OK. Otherwise go drown in your liberal tears haters.

      • Somebody says:

If they change it, it will most likely be Santa Anna or SNA. Which is what it is referred to now. I doubt they’d deviate from SNA, why add confusion.

Another nail in the coffin of pro-active police work in Illinois, more specifically, Chicago.
Bit of a read. Again, h/t SecondCityCop
Short Description: CRIM PRO-QUESTION W/O ARREST

House Sponsors: La Shawn K. Ford

Hearings: Judiciary – Criminal Committee Hearing Feb 26 2019 3:00PM Capitol Building Room 118 Springfield, IL

    Synopsis As Introduced
Amends the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1963. Provides that a peace officer shall not stop any person in a public place based upon an officer’s inference from the circumstances that the person is committing, is about to commit, or has committed an offense as defined in the Code. Eliminates a provision requiring an officer to provide the person with a stop receipt that provides the reason for the stop and contains the officer’s name and badge number. Makes conforming changes. Effective immediately.
Did you catch that? No, not the part about eliminating the stop receipt. The part where conducting a Terry Stop – the most basic of all police work, defined by the US Supreme Court and recognized nationwide as a lawful police action – is completely disallowed. A receipt isn’t necessary any more because ALL STREET STOPS WOULD BE OUTLAWED BY STATUTE.
    you see someone hanging out in a known narcotics hotspot, fitting a given description, engaging in conversation with passersby, exchanging small objects for green slips of paper? No stop allowed;
    you observe someone with a burning piece of rolled up paper on a CTA platform, expelling a whitish vapor from their mouth, and discarding the paper onto the ground? No stop allowed;
you see someone standing with their hands up in the air, while one or more persons rifles through their pockets, removing phones, wallets, other property? No stop allowed
Your observations as a police office would now be invalid according to LaShawn K. Ford’s House Bill 0156. The Terry Stop would be no more. “Fetal” has been written into this bill and has already passed from First Reading to the Rules Committee on to the Judiciary – Criminal Committee and is currently awaiting action in the subcommittee.

Illinois politicians have to be among the stupidest people alive, and LaShawn Ford wins (hands down) the “To Dumb to Breathe Unassisted” award for 2019.

Is A Star is Born worth renting?

    • elliesmom says:

The original with Judy Garland and James Mason is. You can rent it at youtube.

      • Mothy67 says:

I’ve seen it and the one with babs. I get this funky lung thing when the weather goes up and down. I just want to veg. There are always so many movies i want to see except when i am actually renting one.

        • lateblum says:

If you haven’t seen “Can you ever Forgive Me?” you should.

          • Mothy67 says:

            Thanks. Rented.

          • Somebody says:

I want to see “Can you ever forgive me”, wanted to see it in the theater but alas didn’t. I’ll have to put it on my watch list, thanks for the reminder Leslie.

Tim if you have Amazon prime, “The Widows” I think that’s it or maybe just Widows is available via prime videos. It’s on my list, had some nominations maybe Leslie or another has seen it and can give a review…….but it’s free if your prime so why not.

While you’re on Amazon, order “Hey girl you need to feel better” tea. I promise.

          • lateblum says:

Hey Somebody, I thought the two stars in “Forgive Me” were superb.

          • Somebody says:

            You’re not your stupid autocorrect

          • elliesmom says:

I don’t know if the tea helped me get better, but it’s tasty, and it’s soothing when it goes down.

          • Somebody says:

I just had to order some more. DD got sick last week and put a hurting on my stash…….but went from no voice and stuffy in the am to voice and breathing in the pm. I think like anything, it works for some bugs but probably not all bugs.

Another natural product I’ve used in the past is called simply Breathe. It’s capsules of quercetin and nettle leaf. I used it once and only once. I had a horrible sinus infection, totally stuffed up draining down into my lungs, blah, blah.

It was highly effective, but 😲. It drains everything, like a water hose coming out of your nose, while simultaneously coughing up a lung….you purge the excess mucous, but it’s disgusting and leaves you exhausted. IOW, maybe a little too effective. Weird thing about that stuff, totally did a number on me….grossed my family out as they witnessed it. 6 months or so later hubby took some. He was only mildly stuffy and it didn’t seem to have any effect on him.

The Hey Girl tea is quite tasty. The wee hours of Saturday morning, the puppies went nuts barking. I get up to see what they’re barking at. DD was making a cup of Hey Girl tea at 3am. I immediately asked if she was getting sick. She replies, nope it’s just so tasty I was craving a cup. I told her it’s too expensive, from now on make a cup of Earl Grey or better yet stay out of my tea. Truthfully if she was going to make tea at 3am, perhaps “Hey Girl, you need to sleep” tea would have a better choice 🙄

          • Mothy67 says:

I enjoyed, but not what i expected. I thought it was about an alcoholic who destroyed a man’s life.

          • lateblum says:

I thought BOTH McCarthy and Grant were beyond good in this. They certainly deserved more recognition than they received overall. YMMV

          • Mothy67 says:

Thanks for tea recommendation but i can’t do weeds. I get like this every time weather changes. Allergic to something. Guess mold. Rain doesn’t bother me though????

          • lyn says:

I’ll use my Leslie money to rent it. Thank you. 😉

The original A Star is Born was in 1937. I saw it a long time ago.

        • DeniseVB says:

TCM showed the first two back to back one afternoon but I forgot it was on. I usually watch a lot of their movies during their Oscar month celebration of all the Oscar winning movies, directors and stars.

    • lateblum says:

I found it so depressing that I hope to never see it again. But I’m glad to have seen it the first time. I thought the make stars we’re very, very good
I thought Gaga was not… except for her singing. How she was nominated is a mystery.

    • DeniseVB says:

I enjoyed it 🙂 It stands on it’s own from the other two.

Were there a lot of black films/actors at the awards? I read a comment from variety which said it was the most boring BET Awards ever.

      • lateblum says:

LoL. Many many poc attended this year. Some day, white people will get their own award program just like BET and the Latin Awards…
Everytime a nominee r/t to a “black themed” movie was announced, a cheer like a Halleluiah chorus sounded. Same with Hispanic names. You’d think it was a race race(contest).
I swear Spike Lee was dressed like a limo driver.

‘Citizen of the Year’ LGBTQ Activist Accused of Burning Down Own Home, Killing Five Pets

When the home of Nikki Joly burned down in 2017, killing five pets, the FBI investigated it as a hate crime…the transgender man and gay rights activist had received threats after having a banner year in this conservative town…a local paper named him the Citizen of the Year. Authorities later determined the fire was intentionally set, but the person they arrested came as a shock…. It was the citizen of the year — Nikki Joly.

This is one of the reasons I have always disagreed with doing away with the draft. These young people have never had to worry that they might be called up or that a loved one might be drafted. As time has passed fewer and fewer people actually know anyone who has served, let alone lost their lives. They also do not tend to know people in other dangerous jobs.

Here in swampland, it is common for people to deny their actual known blood line/relatives that might include those who were farmers, miners or butchers and the like but tell everyone how excited they are to finding their “true roots” through those DNA tests and on-line ancestry sites.
