Tuesday True Statement Open Thread

Back in the innocent youthful days of my 40’s I became infatuated with the idea of social media as a virtual public forum where everybody could have their own soapbox and anyone could debate anyone. A place for pure debate, where logic and reason reigned supreme.

Boy, was I wrong. Like all utopias, it did not survive contact with human nature. Eventually, I came to the realization that nobody has ever won an argument on the internet. Lies never die on the internet. You can track down a lie, corner it, and beat it into submission. But after tattooing “DEBUNKED” on the lie’s forehead and leaving it for dead you turn around and there it is again, completely unharmed.

Social media is evil. Social media is a portal into hell. Facebook’s sign-in page should have a banner that says “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.”

Same with my idea that women would change politics and government once there were sufficient numbers of women in politics. HA! That Utopian idea got stomped on by reality and human nature which women are also subject to.

  2. DeniseVB says:

It took a few years, but once you learn to manage your settings, get the hang of blocking and muting, I rather enjoy hanging out on FB and Twitter.

    • Myiq2xu™ says:

Twitter can be fun, but FB was getting too damn aggressive in demanding my personal info. I don’t want them knowing my secrets. Zuck Fuckerberg.

      • lateblum says:

I was on FB years ago…2007-8. Everything was “Obama this… Obama that…” I left when I felt so intimidated by the overwhelmingly hateful responses to anything pro-HRC. I just walked away. Never said I was going. I just left. I was fine with that, then. I’m fine with that now.

        • DeniseVB says:

I didn’t join FB until 2009, you’d still be there if we were “friends” 😀 Seriously, come back, those of us here over there have a lot of fun. A few years ago I figured out a way to make a secret clubhouse for TCH, I don’t even think Zuck can find us (lol!).

        • taw46 says:

You have to scroll on by. And “hide” certain leftist publications when they show up. And unfriend. And of course, join the secret clubhouse! LOL.

      • DeniseVB says:

I give FB nothing. I use my real name and hometown so old boyfriends can find me 😛 So far I’m scoring with my h.s. boyfriends, but those were my virgin years.

My son uses a fake name and occupation. The rest of my relatives (who haven’t defriended me yet) use their real names and it’s mostly family stuff. Those are worth it.

The only politics I follow are the WalkAway group, Milo,Scott Presler, a few conservative comedians and some nutty liberal bashing pages, but those are uplifting. Like Twitter, I avoid PDJT and msm posts because of the trolls they attract. I’m boring on FB 😀

FB is a time suck, but a happy one.

  3. DeniseVB says:

Now this is just weird ….

  4. John Denney says:

Shocking? I didn’t find this shocking at all. I find chemistry and physics very interesting, but this is a big nothingburger.

    https://www.foxnews.com/science/nasa-was-able-to-recreate-the-origins-of-life-and-the-results-are-shocking

Why is it a nothingburger? Because besides loving chemistry and physics, I’m also a software engineer.

DNA is evidence that God exists.
For life to exist, it must replicate. Replication requires the DNA replicate, which requires, among other things, two enzymes. The coding for the two enzymes must exist in the DNA, otherwise the cell could not replicate. What are the odds of the coding for these two enzymes appearing by random chance? (Remember, there is no life yet, so evolution is not the answer.) The enzymes are complex, requiring about 1800 “rungs” on the DNA ladder for their coding. Each rung can be one of four possibilities, so the odds of guessing the right combination of 1800 rungs is 1 chance in 4 raised to the 1800th power. That’s a really small chance; less than 1 in 10 followed by 1000 zeroes.

“But”, you say, “in a 15 billion year old universe with billions of suns . . .”

OK. The universe is estimated to contain about 10 to the 70th atoms. (That’s a 1 followed by 70 zeroes.) If we were to go to the absurd extreme of giving every atom in the universe a million guesses per second for 15 billion years, how many guesses would that be? Not even 10 to the 100th power. The number of expected correct guesses is the number of guesses multiplied by the odds, for instance, guessing “heads” or “tails” for 100 coin tosses, where the odds are 1 in 2, 100 times 1/2 gives you 50 as the number of correct guesses to expect.

If we multiply our absurdly overestimated number of cosmic guesses of the correct enzymatic combination times the odds of guessing correctly, we get zeroes out to the 900th decimal place.

Since the universe is incapable of generating that DNA information, an open minded individual would conclude that it had to have come from outside the universe, which coincides nicely with, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Is your other name Thomas Aquinas?
I’m using your proof of the existence of God the next time I’m challenged. I plan to print it out and tuck it away in my “back pocket”.

      • John Denney says:

Oh, yes! Feel free to do so!
        I’ve gotten two arguments back:
        1) You should talk to a REAL scientist.
Over breakfast in a B&B, I presented this argument to a married couple who were both Ph.Ds working with DNA in the biotech industry. They mumbled something about:

        2) DNA may have evolved in a hypothetical RNA world.

Then they changed the subject. It was a very weak argument since it just pushes the argument back one level.

Note that my argument is only concerned with the odds of getting the INFORMATION CONTENT correct. It doesn’t consider the improbabilities of the organic chemistry required to create DNA in the first place, and the odds against protein machinery falling together by random chance capable of reading the DNA and doing what it says. And the odds against said DNA and protein machinery falling together by random chance on the same planet.
The Miller-Urey experiment generated amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, but DNA is not made of amino acids; it’s made of nucleotides.

That was fun. Even mathematically, you can’t get past that prime mover, even in the primordial soup.

      • Myiq2xu™ says:

I’ve always thought that the Genesis story of creation sounded remarkably like someone describing the Big Bang.

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

    • Mt.Laurel says:

You have stated, far more succinctly, the thoughts that often run through my head as to why there is something far greater than mere chance at play that we are here and it always leads back to “In the beginning . . “.

I love this stuff, thanks John. A few years ago I watched a film at the AMNH about the deepest explorations of our oceans. “THAT ONE! The one with the giant clown mouth. Who is that?”
    “I dunno.”
    “Grrrrrr.”

Some radical feminists are fighting it, and they have been labeled TERFs. TERF translates to Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. They have been ostracized from feminist and LGBT events, online sites, tossed off of public committees, and attacked verbally and physically by the more demure members of the Trans community,

Martina called bullshit on men playing in women’s tennis matches and she was promptly trashed as transphobic, hater, expelled from the LBTQetc. community. This trans bullshit is just another example of women being abused by a small group of men and “intersectional feminists” cooperating and supporting the bullying; this is some sick “progressive” shit.

        • swanspirit says:

Exactly. There is no room for discussion or debate with these neofascists. If you disagree, it doesn’t matter who or what you are or were to their community. You are ousted, and ostracized.

      Science, baby.

  12. swanspirit says:

I know I am old in internet years. I am so old, I remember flame wars. Flame wars usually took place on a quaint and antique internet communication device called a message board. Some people enjoyed flame wars. Those people tried to deliberately start flame wars. These people were first called flamers, and then eventually became known as trolls. People learned, sometimes the hard way, not to feed the trolls. Some people still do, but far fewer.
But back then, anonymity was a shield, and people could get away with a lot more, than they can now.

    • Constance says:

I think what is behind this with the younger voters is they all are paying into Social Security and Medicare and they believe there will be nothing there for them when they are old. So they feel the system isn’t working for them and any system would be an improvement. President Trump needs to take steps to stabilize both programs and then young folks will believe in the American system again.

There’s one thing about Panodrama that remains unclear. It was supposed to be live-streamed on Facebook during the Manchester rally, but the stream stopped dead early on. A backup YouTube stream also halted shortly thereafter. The film was switched to a new Facebook page, that feed, too, terminated mysteriously. Not until Monday afternoon, Greenwich time, was the full documentary posted on Tommy’s Facebook page. It’s now gone. In fact, on Tuesday, Tommy was banned from Facebook and his page taken down. Presumably the documentary will resurface somewhere else online. Find it and watch it. By itself, it won’t sink the BBC, but it’s a brilliant job, handsomely photographed and snappily edited — and it is, we can hope, just the opening salvo in a long-deferred, all-out war against the British government’s fake-news empire.

        • Somebody says:

I won’t watch it either, hubby has it on in background. Walked by a minute ago Jim Jordan asked Cohen if he’d met with special counsel since his sentencing hearing. He said he met with SC 7 times, Jordan says public record you met 7 times prior to sentencing, I am asking have you met with anyone in the SC’s office since the date of your sentencing. Chairman says time expired…….Cohen says, I don’t know how to answer that question…..what a crock.

This is all kabuki, a show trial to trash POTUS. None of this has anything to do with oversight of the government. I hope Cohen gets a nice cell with Bubba and gets to be the mommy. Truth is, Cohen will never make it to a jail cell and he’s probably too stupid to realize it. He’s nothing more than a useful idiot and it’d be too risky to keep him around, he’s proven he has no loyalty. He will be Arkancided soon after he finishes testifying before the various committees. I hope his wife has maintained his life insurance policies.

NEW YORK (AP) — Big, brassy letters spelling “Trump” will be ripped off another New York City apartment tower, the last of six luxury condominiums that once displayed the president’s name.

Owners got an email Friday from the board of a high-rise on Manhattan’s west side confirming that “Trump Place” will disappear from the facade in coming weeks.
