There was a time in my youth when elected officials could be openly racist in some places in America. We had governors, Senators, at least one Supreme Court Justice and as many as four Presidents that were confirmed or alleged to be active or former members of the Ku Klux Klan. By the time I was born in 1960 that era was waning and by 1965 racial discrimination was illegal and the federal government was actively enforcing the right of blacks and other racial minorities to vote. Practically overnight racism became taboo.
Things got better for a while. Freed from de jure discrimination, black people across the nation began to rise up in all fields of endeavor. We had black people at or near the top in law, medicine, business, science, entertainment, sports, military, you name it. In some areas, like sports, they even began to dominate. In 2008 we elected our first black President.
Some people celebrated the election of Barack Obama as the culmination of Martin Luther King’s dream. Sadly, his election triggered a backlash by white people who were enraged to see a black man in the White House. This backlash would result in race relations being set back at least 50 years, maybe more. At least that’s what the Democrats say.
According to the Left, the poorly concealed racism of the Republican party was the driving force that united them in opposition to everything Barack Obama said and did. It didn’t matter whether the subject was taxes or spending, foreign policy or domestic policy, gun control, immigration, global
warming climate change, or healthcare, Republicans opposed Barack Obama because he was black.
Democrats say that it was racism that caused the GOP rank and file to form the Tea Party, which was sorta like the Klan but without the white hoods. But the worst part of this racist resurgence was when white cops all across the country, operating under color of authority, began murdering black men with impunity. The most egregious incident was the case of Mike Brown in Ferguson Missouri. In August of 2014 Brown was an 18-year-old gentle giant who had recently graduated from high school and was looking forward to starting college in the fall. Then on August 9th he was stopped for no reason by white police officer Darren Wilson who, despite Brown’s upraised empty hands and pleas to “Don’t shoot,” gunned Brown down in cold blood.
If Democrats are to be believed, a populist huckster named Donald Trump saw all of this as an opportunity. Using racial dog whistles and racist coded language (like questioning Obama’s birth certificate) he was able to garner the support of a secret society of white supremacists known as the “alt-right.” (These alt-righters are as virulent a hate group as any Klansmen or Nazis that ever lived, but they cleverly hide their racial hatred behind moderating language and never openly use racial epithets or advocate racist policies. They publicly deny they are racists and pretend to only be concerned about crime or illegal immigration.)
Democrats claim that Trump established his position as the “white” candidate when he kicked off his campaign by announcing that all Mexicans were rapists. Then later, when he was called out for his racism, Trump would lie and deny he ever said such a thing. This began a pattern that continues to this day.
If you ask any Democrat they will tell you that none of this would have mattered if the media had done its job. But the media ignored Trump’s racism and lies and instead obsessed about Hillary’s emails. The media gave Trump what amounted to billions of dollars in free advertising. This kept the election close enough that Vlad Putin and his merry band of Russian hackers were, in collusion with Donald Trump, able to hack the vote in a few key places and tip the election to Trump.
Democrats have been telling us over and over and over again that Trump’s successful theft of the presidency has only emboldened and empowered the racist right. Since the election there has been a surge in racial hate crimes that is reminiscent of the heydey of Jim Crow and the Klan. That is why Jussie Smollett was able to fool so many people with his unfortunate hate crime hoax. Yes, Jussie lied, but what he described has become so commonplace that his story was easy to believe.
That is what the Democrats say, anyway.
I have a question for the Democrats. If racists are everywhere and racial hate crimes are so common, where are they?
If a person wanted to join the KKK or the Neo-Nazis, where would he go to sign up? They have been booted off social media. Do they have a PO Box or a phone number? The only people I know of that joined a white supremacist group had to go to prison to apply for membership.
What exactly is the white supremacist ideology? Who are the leaders of this movement and what do they advocate? Do they want to bring back segregation and/or slavery? Will they settle for sending all the black people to Africa or do they want genocide?
Is there any openly racist elected official in this country? What about appointed officials?
If racial hate crimes are so common, where are they? I cannot think of a case like Jussie Smollett’s that was not a hoax. And what exactly do we mean by “racial hate crime?” If someone scrawls a swastika on a bathroom wall at state college, is that a racial hate crime? How do you separate the hate crimes from the hoaxes and the “crime-crimes?”
For that matter, how do we define racism?
I have more questions, but my monthly Patriarchy luncheon is at noon so I gotta go.
