Clovis is the conjoined twin of Fresno, except Clovis doesn’t have any slums. Red is the color of the Bulldog gang in Fresno (as well as the Fresno State Bulldogs) and lots of schools in California ban all hats except the official hats of that school. Blanket bans (No hats) are more likely to be upheld than specific bans (No MAGA hats) because a blanket ban does not discriminate based on viewpoint. SCOTUS is usually deferential to schools’ dress codes.

      • Myiq2xu™ says:

If you were looking for the town that was the best place to live in the Central Valley, Clovis would be on your list. It has the same filthy dirty air as Fresno (we all do) but in terms of crime, welfare, household income, etc you won’t find much better.

I think all /most /some//me of us have decided to move to Texas 😉 I gave up on Cali in the 70’s, NC in the 80’s, FL in the 90’s, now VA is getting on my last nerve. I have no clue where I would move too now. And I’m a Zillow warrior, every place seems to suck compared to my current residence. Right now, that sucks too 😉

If you missed it, not to worry you can rent it on air BnB 😲 Who would want to rent a sex dungeon? I guess if you took a few gallons of bleach and sanitizer 😕

I’m kinda old fashioned. I don’t need all that kinky stuff. Just give me a couple silk neckties, a stout chair, and a lit cigarette and I’m happy.

What is up with the California schools’ hostility to free speech? My law partner’s kid goes to a public high school in CA, and it seems like she’s down there almost every damn week to explain the First Amendment and Tinker v. Des Moines to the principal.

    Any art lovers here?

Wow! I didn’t see this when I was in Naples. 🙂

    • Anthony says:

I got to see them in 2003. I accompanied a friend who worked as collections coordinator for The Met to swap art in Naples and Bruges. She knew about my passion for art from Herculaneum and Pompeii so this was a real treat for me to see. Also went to Athens to pick up gold funerary objects originally found in Sicily at the temple of Aphrodite Eryxina on Mount Eryx

      • Dora says:

You lucky thing! That sounds like a fascinating trip

When I was growing up, my parents had a painting on the wall of “The Ruins of Pompeii” which always attracted my attention. Not so much for the hidden art, but as a destroyed city. Back in the 90s when I finally got a chance to visit the city and walk around in those ruins, I found it an amazing experience. Like something unreal.

I wish I could go back, but Europe is not the same anymore.

        • Anthony says:

I’m so glad you got to see it. Being there, you can’t help feeling that the past has become the present. One of my favorite dig sites was Asellina’s Tavern, discovered intact, owned by a woman of the same name and staffed entirely by women (unusual in those days); all freed slaves and very political.

          • taw46 says:

I was there in 1999. It was even more than I imagined all those years. I was amazed with the size of Pompeii and the fact that they were still excavating the site. I just wish I had the time to go to Herculaneum as well. And may I say, Amalfi Coast is one gorgeous place to visit.

      • swanspirit says:

That sounds fantastic, Anthony! Anytime you want to share pics, I would love to see them!

        • Anthony says:

We weren’t allowed to photograph any of the art because it was too fragile, but i did manage to get a sneak shot of a Lararium, which is a household altar to honor deceased ancestors. It is a shrine that housed human remains, and was honored every morning with a ritual conducted by the paterfamilia along with the entire family and staff. The belief that ancestral spirits would protect the family from intruders was so strong that all valuables were also stored within it and thieves wouldnt dare disturb it. Each and every household, no matter how rich or poor, had one in the atrium of their home

        • lateblum says:

Me too! I never got beyond Ireland and London, so my travel life was a tad stunted. Please post photos.

      • Ann says:

We are headed back to Italy for six weeks this fall. Pompeii is one place we did not get to (even with 5 days in Sorrento), so are heading there this time. We will also be spending a week in Sicily, so marking down any and all suggestions!

She’s stretched out in the snow with her tongue open catching snowflakes. Elliesdad and I are having an argument over whether this makes her a Democrat or a Repubican. He says Democrat because she’s bought into global warming and refuses to believe it’s cold outside. I say Republican because she’s going to have to nearly freeze to death before she recognizes how hostile an environment she’s in.

Democrats Prepare Congressional Hearings over Trump Saying ‘Fake News’

    • lateblum says:

Soon they are going to hold hearings over how much toilet paper he uses and when he uses it !!!
I’ve already heard 3 “news” reports this week that each person in the U”S uses 3 rolls of tp per week and we are destroying the forests. Perhaps they are encouraging more cities to become like San Francisco and just take dumps on the streets. Soon London of centuries ago will have nothing on the major sh*tholes of the US.

      • John Denney says:

Ancient Rome had no toilet paper. The aquaducts provided a constant flow of water through the public toilets, carrying away the waste. Think Port-a-pottie seat over a creek. Always clean and fresh.
A second water channel ran in front of where you were seated, and at each seat was a sponge on a stick. You’d grab the handle, clean the sponge in the running water in front of you, then clean yourself with it. The front of the seat was slotted all the way to the floor, so it just took a turn of the wrist to take the sponge from the water channel to your bottom.

        • lateblum says:

John Denney, where did you learn this??? How amazing! How do you know so much? I am so envious of your knowledge!

    • taw46 says:

This is more than a hearing on PT accusations of fake news.

“House Democrats are opening an investigation into what they say are abuses of power by President Donald Trump through his attacks on the courts, the Justice Department, the FBI and the media, according to a House official familiar with the plans.
Topics for the inquiry will include Trump’s public humiliation of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, his attacks on actions by the liberal Ninth Circuit Court and his abuse of reporters as “dishonest” and “enemies of the people,” said the person, who asked for anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.”

      • taw46 says:

We all know what they are doing. Even if they don’t file articles of impeachment, they plan to keep him tied up in hopes of slowing down or stopping his agenda. And of course, they think they can destroy him so he won’t run in 2020. Not to mention dragging in anyone who works for him, so they are burdened with attorney fees, hoping they quit and no one else will work for him.

    I. Can’t. Even. There is no hope for Maryland.
Hogan Solicits Obama’s Help on Redistricting

Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) is hoping to enlist the support of two high-profile Democrats — including former President Barack Obama — in his push to bring nonpartisan redistricting to Maryland.

With the “emergency commission” that he created last year poised to release a proposed congressional map that the state could use in 2020, Hogan is asking Obama and former U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., to throw their weight behind his efforts.

The two men are co-founders of the Washington, D.C.-based National Democratic Redistricting Committee.

The NDRC’s website claims that “Republicans have rigged our elections by gerrymandering districts all across the country. This unfair advantage is making it harder for Democrats to fight climate change, pass gun control, and ensure access to health care for everyone.”

The organization bills itself as “the centralized hub for executing a comprehensive redistricting strategy that shifts the redistricting power, creating fair districts where Democrats can compete.”

In his letters to the two men, Hogan writes, “I am in complete agreement with your goal of building a democracy where voters pick their elected representatives, not the other way around.”

After praising the two men for efforts to establish nonpartisan redistricting commissions in several others states, Hogan urges them to get involved in Maryland, where the General Assembly is considering a host of reform measures.

“With your support, I believe we can set things right in Maryland,” Hogan writes.

    Chuck Norris vs Communism

    • taw46 says:

I must watch that, since I drove through the country in 1984. When we drove from Hungary into Romania, we were stopped at the border for at least two hours or more. While going though our car, the guard found a home decoration magazine we forgot to throw away. He sat in the car and looked through the entire magazine. Luckily they didn’t drag us away for smuggling subversive material into the country.

  43. John Denney says:

The week has passed, and still no Mueller report.

Or was there? And there was nothing there, so no news coverage? Except the Dem Congress has “moved on” to trying to get the President’s tax returns, in yet another attempt to find something, anything, that would rid them of this man.

    • Constance says:

The IRS accepted Trumps returns so they are good from my perspective. If the IRS wasn’t satisfied they had the responsibility to say so and they didn’t. I think people will be horrified at the government not only using but exposing tax returns in a attempt at persecution.

  44. Mothy67 says:
