Om Mani Padme Hum Open Thread

Some days I are so overwhelming that just sit there with my eyes closed and chant “Om mani padme hum” until I feel better or the guy behind me honks his horn.

I’m sick of the world right now.

About Myiq2xu

If I had known this was the end of the world I would have brought refreshments.

This video (originally aired on ABC) cause lots of suburban dads to decide that having cable television with MTV wouldn’t be so bad after all.

I started watching Les Miserables on Masterpiece on PBS. Only episode 1 has aired so far. A PBS passport will get you the full series now. I used to have one of those, but I don’t anymore. But anyway- the first episode was pretty good. Derek Jacobi showed up in the role of the bishop. He’s always a pleasure. Fantine’s youthful idealism is on display in a way Anne Hathaway never quite pulled off. I read Les Miserables in French, and a lot of the details got lost in the process. When you’re concentrating on understanding the language, it’s easy to lose things. My adult exposure has mostly been through the musical, and while I love it, some of the details of the story get lost there, too. My PBS station airs it for the first time on Sunday nights.

What to the people here, think of this idea? I heard on tv that France no longer has the tall trees that made the wooden beams in Notre Dame Cathedral, We have redwood trees that get really tall. Why not use some of them, I understand that when they are cut down there is reseeding being done. They are tall, strong and I can not think of a better use for the cut timber. It would help relations between the US and France and they would be a part of world history. good or bad idea?

Robert Francis is a typical tax dodger.

Encompassing 2008 through 2017, the hundreds of pages of returns show that the former Texas congressman and his wife, Amy, had a total annual income of more than $330,000 from 2015 to 2017. His effective tax rate for 2017 was 22%.

In 2008, their joint income was around $280,000.

In a statement, O’Rourke’s campaign said it would be making his 2018 tax returns public ‘as soon as possible after they are filed.’

In 2017, the O’Rourkes paid about $81,000 in taxes on an adjusted gross income of nearly $366,500. The couple did not give much of their income to charity, donating only about $1,200 in 2017 and less than $900 each in 2016 and 2015.

Wow, wonder which charities he donated to? He seems so comfy using other people’s money.

I wish someone from right wing media would do a follow-up piece on left wing criminality. What became of the young man who hacked a sitting governor ‘s email? Frannie o’dork’s staff breaking campaign violations. Guy who punched the conservative on campus. Kids who burned a dorm door. There have been so many arrests but you never hear of consequences. Some are still going through the process, but what of those arrested with felonies during inauguration. Bike lock teach got a slap on the wrist. AOC is going to skate on misuse of funds. Aaron Shock had to resign for his penchant for misuse/abuse. A juxtaposition piece of the double standards would be revealing. I’d love to see a side by side of biden’s son and joe average caught with an 8 ball.
Breitbart could use a bit of investigative journalism. I used to read everyday. Now it’s nothing but someone going to drudge clicking on a story and rehashing it through a conservative lens and copying a few tweets. Nothing to sick your teeth into.

Not, according to the gofundme page, a picture of the kid or his mother. People are so weird – why would someone post such a pointless lie???? Fund is over 750 now.

    During Notre Dame Inferno

  14. Mothy67 says:

I don’t think so. I did a search and got nothing. I think it acts pretty fast so trying to get to an urban area would have to be done without a human host, but whoa if they could get it across the border and then use it as part of a suicide mission amongst the homeless!!!

  15. swanspirit says:

has anyone else seen this mysterious man?

    • taw46 says:

It’s a fireman, well into the fire, after the spire has collapsed. It is taken from this live video. You can see him just pass the 42:00 mark.

        • taw46 says:

You are welcome. I found that on twitter yesterday. If you keep watching, you can see other firemen walking up there. It isn’t that I don’t think terrorists would do this, it’s just that this particular clip isn’t it. And by the way, I am pissed that the media is covering up the hundreds of desecrated churches in France. And I believe they know who is behind most of those.

      • DeniseVB says:

I meant to send you the “enhanced” photo of mystery man proven to be a fireman downstairs, I think my tinfoil was wound too tight on my head 😛 There’s also an article being passed around about a car full of gas cans and papers with arabic writing …. fake, fake, fake. It’s from 2016. I can’t even trust the right side of news stories these days 😛

        • taw46 says:

Because hundreds of churches have been desecrated in France, and because authorities/media do not report it, it is perfectly normal for people to be suspicious of the Notre Dame fire.

I know, can’t trust anyone these days. Have to read and read and hope to find some logical truth somewhere in all the bs.

Beto was in my area yesterday making stops at dive bars. Local media only found people who swooned over him to interview. Weird coverage. He’s prowling the rest of the state this week and nobody’s bothering to protest him, yawnnnnn.

This is from my granddaughters’ school. A very bizzare situation.

    • taw46 says:

I saw that last night. A young woman who has threatened Columbine and about 20 other schools. And they can’t find her. Scary times.

    • taw46 says:

She is a senior at Miami Beach HS.

      • DeniseVB says:

Media is no help this morning. There’s a 7 day waiting period for gun purchases in CO. She just couldn’t walk in and buy a gun, legally.

        • taw46 says:

Denise, I found this. It’s a thread, supposedly of postings she made on a gun forum.

          • DeniseVB says:

“Behind the 16th street mall after dark” was one reply in another thread. She’s certainly not travelling alone to cover all that territory in a day. Someone found her on the High Spectrum Autism Forum too.

All that article says is that the owner of the restoration company says his 12 workers had already left for the day. So they had been there. And from what I read, there were other companies working there as well. Anyway, I agree with one of the comments, could have been caused by any of these:

“It could have been arson or it could have just as likely been an electrical problem either caused by the old building and old wiring or work mans lighting and extension cords and power tools. They stopped work and left and something shorted out and caught fire. An old building like that is a fire waiting to happen. The entire roof is constructed from single tree trunk beams and was built in the years 1163 – 1345. There was likely flammable liquids and rags in the work areas as well. By 1831 Victor Hugo’s novel described how decrepit the condition of the cathedral was 480 years later and resulted in 20 years of restoration work.”

(And that was the last time any restoration work had been done, 150 yrs ago. According to the experts who worked with Notre Dame and had been pushing for restoration, there was a real danger of the ceiling collapsing, worry about some of the flying buttresses collapsing, pieces of stone had been falling. It was in sad shape and should have been restored years ago.)

  23. DandyTIger says:

The usual progs are now very upset that money is going to repair Notre Dame when there are starving children in India. First of all, India is a major world power and can easily feed their own if they want. Second, hunger is not a money or resource problem, it’s a political problem, as we’ve known for a long time. I suspect mostly they’re upset because Notre Dame is a religions thing.

    • lyn says:

It’s not their money, so they can STFU.

      • DandyTIger says:

But they want it. Whaaaaaaaa. 🙂 Yeah, I think they’re upset because they think it should all go under their control to “feed the poor”. Which of course means keep it amongst the prog elite and not feed the poor.

    • Cisco says:

      Hey! Fuck all of them.
Every f’ucking moocher is out there trying to extort.
Black churches burned, 3 or 4. Yea, give them money.
      Saw that.
      F’ucking moocher will never change.
Instead of giving any money to these leeches, tear the f’ucking thing down.
Every parasite is looking for freebees.

    • taw46 says:

They want it for everything on Twitter! Money for the Grenfell fire victims, for the burning rainforests in South America, climate change, Flint needs drinking water, Louisiana’s burned black churches — and on and on. How dare they give money to Notre Dame!

Thoughts on FUCT trademark before SCOTUS?
I hope they permit it. Poor taste but the price of freedom. No worse than woman’s march.

    • taw46 says:

This is what got my attention:

“That prompted Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to ask how the trademark office defines what is scandalous, shocking or offensive. And, Ginsburg inquired, do 20-year-olds generally find “FUCT” to be shocking or scandalous?”

Was she there or on the phone?

    • taw46 says:

As for my opinion, it would be one thing if the Patent office had stuck with the original statute:
“……..The U.S. government Patent and Trademark Office, however, has consistently rejected his trademark application, contending that those letters, “FUCT,” violate the federal statute that bars trademark protection for “immoral,” “shocking,” “offensive” and “scandalous” words.”

From the hearing, it seems like they have allowed other “offensive” terms through, so doesn’t seem like they can deny this one.

      • taw46 says:

Of course as pointed out in the article, the more you allow, the more the likelihood of even worse terms. Then how can you say no?

        • Mothy67 says:

I am always weary of any limits on speech. What’s to stop the Amish from using every trick in the book to get blasphemy laws passed.

          • taw46 says:

Well, I am too. But no one has said he can’t use that term, just that he can’t trademark the name. He has free speech, that has been his company name since the 90s.

          • Mothy67 says:

I know I just think they are always looking to find some way to curb our rights. I think the name is childish and lacking in respect. We have a generation that believes hate speech is not free speech. Posted a tweet on next thread about students protesting Paglia. So sad. Art students? Thank God the Supreme Court unanimously declared it is.

    • elliesmom says:

Is there a language without any “bad words” in it? I can swear in French because one of my high school friend’s mom was French, and she was really good at letting off steam. I don’t know any Latin swear words, but surely Julius Caesar said more than “Et tu” to Brutus. Why not just have the Supreme Court rule there are no forbidden words?

I just heard on the radio that the Florida girl who flew to CO and supposedly “bought a gun” is confirmed dead. I didn’t hear any of the real report, so can’t fill in details.

    • Mothy67 says:

Heard that too and that she is Amish. Who knows. Seems everyone is Amish.

    • Mothy67 says:

Very sad. Wonder why she never got any help.

      • lateblum says:

Sometimes when a person is very high functioning on the Austim spectrum, help is limited. Sometimes by the adults, sometimes by the person. And even when people get help, it may not be enough or the right help. But I agree, it is very sad,

      • taw46 says:

I feel sorry for her parents.

        • lateblum says:

I was thinking about how devastated they must be. Now, after all this, they have lost their daughter and have to fly her body back home. How very sad.

    • DeniseVB says:

      Confirmed now….
