Oh Noes! The Ice Is Melting!

We better do something quick, huh?

Thinning of Antarctic ice sheets spreading inland rapidly – study

Ice losses are rapidly spreading deep into the interior of the Antarctic, new analysis of satellite data shows.

The warming of the Southern Ocean is resulting in glaciers sliding into the sea increasingly rapidly, with ice now being lost five times faster than in the 1990s. The West Antarctic ice sheet was stable in 1992 but up to a quarter of its expanse is now thinning. More than 100 metres of ice thickness has been lost in the worst-hit places.

A complete loss of the West Antarctic ice sheet would drive global sea levels up by about five metres, drowning coastal cities around the world. The current losses are doubling every decade, the scientists said, and sea level rise are now running at the extreme end of projections made just a few years ago.

The research, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, compared 800m satellite measurements of ice sheet height from 1992 to 2017 with weather information. This distinguished short-term changes owing to varying snowfall from long-term changes owing to climate.

“From a standing start in the 1990s, thinning has spread inland progressively over the past 25 years – that is rapid in glaciological terms,” said Prof Andy Shepherd, of Leeds University in the UK, who led the study. “The speed of drawing down ice from an ice sheet used to be spoken of in geological timescales, but that has now been replaced by people’s lifetimes.”

He said the thinning of some ice streams had extended 300 miles inland along their 600-mile length. “More than 50% of the Pine Island and Thwaites glacier basins have been affected by thinning in the past 25 years. We are past halfway and that is a worry.”

Oh, my! That sounds serious.

In the recent past, snow falling on to Antarctica’s glaciers balanced the ice lost as icebergs calved off into the ocean. But now the glaciers are flowing faster than snow can replenish them.

“Along a 3,000km [1,850-mile] stretch of West Antarctica, the water in front of the glaciers is too hot,” he said. This causes melting of the underside of the glaciers where they grind against the seabed. The melting lessens the friction and allows the glaciers then to slide more quickly into the ocean and therefore become thinner.

“In parts of Antarctica, the ice sheet has thinned by extraordinary amounts,” Shepherd said.

Separate research published in January found that ice loss from the entire Antarctic continent had increased six-fold since the 1980s, with the biggest losses in the west.

I guess Beto was right. Sign me up for AOC’s Green New Deal.

The new study indicates West Antarctica has caused 5mm of sea level rise since 1992, consistent with the January study’s findings.

Wait . . . what?

The new study indicates West Antarctica has caused 5mm of sea level rise since 1992, consistent with the January study’s findings.

5mm? Five millimeters?

{{Holds up thumb and forefinger to estimate 5mm. Realizes he is making racist “Ok” sign and quickly puts hand down.}}

Five fucking millimeters?

I have noticed that. According to the first warnings, we should all be dead by now. 🙂

As you are growing to suspect, it appears to be complete bullshit. They’ve fucked with the historical temperature data to make it appear the temperatures are warming. Check out @SteveGoddard

Well 5mm is somewhat similar to 5 meters, so………

Some people at PBS made the really brave decision to have a cartoon character in a really lame kids show come out as gay and get married.

      Nobody cares.

      • DeniseVB says:

In the 80’s Roseanne had a gay wedding on her show, nobody batted an eye and that was edgy back then, but she got fired, 30 years later, for a sarcastic tweet about the real life cartoon character, ValJar.

Arthur has been pushing LGBT since at least 2003/2004 when he visited a farm owned by lesbians. I don’t know why the writers feel the need to in essence indoctrinate toddlers and pre-schoolers, which is the age group the show is aimed at. Kids that age generally are not aware of sexuality. 🙄

I remember when I was chair of the local PBS television advisory committee, a subset of the board on which I also served. Each community was supposed to vote whether or not to air the episode. I had 2 AA pastors on my committee that were adamant it did not meet our “community standards”. The committee voted not to air, the GM was less than thrilled with that decision 🙄. Memories, what a miserable 3 year term, thought it would never end 🙄

LGBT is a tiny fraction of society, yet they receive an outsized portion of attention on TV and the big screen. AA also receive outsized representation. I know people from other countries that have watched American movies and TV. When they come to visit they are shocked to find out half our population isn’t either AA or gay 😂

My grandkids don’t watch PBS kids, but I still don’t believe SJW television should be aimed at toddlers. Also, boy am I glad I’m not on the board at PBS anymore 😜

This. People from all over the world often mention on how swampland demographics do not match the view they have seen in American movies and tv. When they travel further from the koolaid zone they find the variance even greater and comment on how nice people are outside the elite bubble. Not what they were expecting.

I need to reread that book. I hated it the first time through because I considered it so far fetched but ever since I find myself thinking that many things are just like 1984. Like Democrat talking points and the Ministry of truth.

Do they (AA students) want white students to get angry or hurt or *triggered* by this move? Are they trying to prove how much better they are than every other group of students? Really, what’s the point?

Great, I’m glad to hear the government is on top of this. There are laws that if you open a public business you must serve all of “the public” So how is this different? If you open an online public business you must serve all of the public. If you don’t want to serve all of the public then call yourselves a club and charge dues. You can’t open a bar and say you only serve Progressives, whites, blacks, men etc so you shouldn’t be able to open an online business and behave as if you don’t serve conservatives.

Hillary Clinton Says Some Male Democrat Candidates for 2020 ‘Are Not Likeable’

      Go. Away. Hillary.

    • John Denney says:

      I don’t like her.

Ever since I read a Rolling Stone article when Bill was first on the Presidential campaign trail. The Stone reporter was present somewhere in the Southwest when a woman approached Hillary, saying she admired her so much that she made her a pair of custom ear rings. Hillary accepted them and gushed back at the woman, thanking her, and how sweet, blah, blah, blah. After the admirer walked away and Hillary was alone with the reporter, she said, “See the s**t I have to put up with? Then she threw the ear rings into the trash.”

Funny how I can’t find that story in the on-line Rolling Stone archives.

I’ve heard many stories like that. She is and always was a nasty woman!

I belong to some NYC FB groups that are not political, I just like visiting my old neighborhoods. When it comes to DeBlasio though, they hate him, they really, really hate him and they know he doesn’t care about that. Cuomo too. The Dem policies are destroying their neighborhoods as well as their livelihoods.

      • Dora says:

Cuomo and DeBlassio. I’ve never heard of two politicians who were so hated, but kept winning their reelections. What the hell is wrong with the voters?

        • DeniseVB says:

Low turnouts, which I think favor Dems? AOC won with a 14% turnout. Maybe the voters will be “woke” after watching their beautiful state circle the drain.

          • lateblum says:

I don’t know. They’ve been watching this “circling the drain” dance for years. They keep electing turds for mayor because that is all they have willing to run.
Side note: the mayor-elect in Chicago — Lori Lightfoot — just learned the city is in “worse shape than previously stated”. More than $200M additional debt than previously “known”. I don’t know why anyone wants to run these democrat cesspools.

There are dinosaur fossils in Antarctica so we know at one time it was much warmer than it is today. The climate is always changing. The oceans rise and the oceans fall, but the amount of water on earth has been pretty constant since the Mesozoic period. It just shifts around from place to place. Water expands when it freezes and also expands when it’s heated. The optimal temperature for minimum volume is 4 degrees C. As the ice melts in Antarctica, it will contract a bit before it expands. If you float some ice cubes in a glass of water, you can see the water level go down as the ice melts.

sometimes I think California does not have a clue about commuter transportation. That train to nowhere started in the wrong place. you would have to drive or take another train to a smaller town then LA where most of the people that use it would be.
I will give you an example of the blindness , I worked for metrolink the LA commuter service. I had come from Phila where no matter what shift I worked I could use the train. When I mentioned that people who worked 2nd or 3rd could not use their transit system due to poor scheduling, they explained that they wanted a 9 to 5 railroad. My answer was then do not take the tax money of the other workers to pay for it. They have become so used to driving they would need to be educated to use transit if it ever became useful to them
