In the Land of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man is King

When Joe Biden is the best you’ve got, you’re in deep shit.

I think it’s safe to say that there are many, many progressive Democrats who are more than a little surprised — and a lot chagrined — at Joe Biden’s polling dominance. Look at FiveThirtyEight’s polling roundup. Aside from a few high and low outliers, he leads the race by a solid 20 points (at least). Even better for him, he’s dominating with nonwhite voters, and after Iowa and New Hampshire — where he leads — the race is heavily weighted towards states with substantial numbers of black voters.

Look, I know it’s early. I know Hillary had massive leads in 2008 and 2016, only to lose and almost lose. I know that Biden has been a terrible campaigner in his two previous presidential races. But Biden is already demonstrating enough strength that Politico has a long piece today asking, “Did the Left Misread the 2020 Democratic Primary?” Here’s a key paragraph:

It’s not just Biden’s rising poll numbers that suggest that the activist left is out of step with most Democrats; it’s the ideological makeup of the entire Democratic Party. Fifty-six percent of Democrats self-identify as “moderate” and 9 percent even embrace “conservative,” according to an April poll from the Judy Ford Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University. While leftist activists pine for the end of the legislative filibuster to grease the skids for partisan legislation, a December GW Politics poll found that 66 percent of Democrats said they prefer elected officials who “make compromises with people they disagree with” over those who “stick to their positions.” Only 36 percent of Republicans said the same.

NR’s own Rich Lowry made a similar observation, also in Politico:

[A]s Harry Enten of CNN, among others, has been insisting for some time, the average Democrat is older, more moderate or conservative, and less likely to have a college degree than you’d guess from following Twitter or cable TV.

These voters were underserved by the rest of the field, and Biden is taking dead aim at them with the simple message that he can beat Trump.

The Democrats didn’t just underestimate Joe Biden’s personal appeal (at least so far), but it appears they also underestimated the size of his ideological lane. As Democrats stampeded left, with even more “moderate” candidates like Beto arguing for tearing down existing border walls, Biden was left largely alone to position himself as the ideal candidate for a whopping 65 percent of the Democratic electorate. Which of the “woke” candidates is best-positioned to challenge Biden for that enormous slice of the Democratic voting public? Meanwhile, the progressive (mostly white) wing of the primary is crowded and competitive.

It’s not that Joe Biden is that good, it’s that the rest of the field is that bad. The Democrat primary (so far) has consisted of a bunch of underwhelming and uninspiring campaign launches. The reaction to each one seems to be a polite nod and then “Who else you got?”

By this time in 2007, Obama had a small army of millennials positioned to pull off an upset. They are trying to market Kamala as the female Obama but she doesn’t have his people skills. Beto and Buttplug are just flavors of the week.

OTOH, Democrats should be grateful that Gropin’ Joe is willing to take one for the team. Because Trump is gonna crush whoever they nominate by too big a margin for them to cheat.

Just saw an item that Biden’s been voting to cut Social Security benefits for decades. Like, that’s not HIS money we the citizens paid into for those decades. God help us if Trump loses in 2020.

Trump administration to release some migrants caught along southern border into South Florida

MIAMI – The Trump administration is preparing to release hundreds of asylum-seeking migrants caught along the southern border into Florida’s Broward and Palm Beach counties, with no apparent plan to house, feed or care for them, according to local officials who have been briefed on the plans.

    • DeniseVB says:

Broward ? He’s dumping them on Debbie Wasserman Schultz’ s backyard. Good move, let her constituents make some noise if they don’t like it. South FL is heavily blue, reps are all for open borders, let it become their problem. No, this may be a brilliant move 🙂 Now if we can only enforce voter photo i.d., which the Dems hate too, they need voter fraud to win.

    • elliesmom says:

No, I’m perfectly OK with the way the story is going. Human nature is human nature, and so far the show hasn’t done anything that contradicts it. 🙂 GOT is not a fairy tale. The characters don’t fall along the good and evil divide. Some of them stride the line. That’s what makes it such a good story.

The fact that people don’t understand foreshadowing isn’t my fault or the writers’ fault.

      • swanspirit says:

I don’t think a plot twist, for the sake of plot twists, is necessarily good story telling. And I think some of the story, was, and is sacrificed to spectacles and cinematography. A flying dragon fire 🔥🔥 spewing dragon, destroying everything and everyone, is much more spectacular, on film, than having a cease fire.

    • lyn says:

Nope. I’ve enjoyed the fan videos. The writers were offered a lot of money to continue the series, but they refused. We get what we get.

I loved the season ending of Young Sheldon more last night. For anyone who thought they’d spend the rest of their lives friendless, it was so sweet. Also a brilliant antidote for the suffering fans of TBBT’s end. Television at it’s finest. (Okay GOT fans, endear #MeToo 😉 )

  18. lateblum says:

I recorded TBBT last night, and didn’t know it was going to be an hour long. 😟
This was the very first time (and likely the only time) I was happy to still have comcast. When, at the end of the first 30 minutes the screen said . . . “To be continued . . .” I became so disappointed in myself for not knowing it would be a two-part finale.
BUT comcast did, and to my amazement, the second half was recorded as well, and I got to see it! It was a lovely ending. Wasn’t it?
I haven’t seen Young Sheldon, but it looks like it could be a sweet and funny show. Will it return in the fall?

    • DeniseVB says:

Like myiq, I pretty much ignored the last few TBBT seasons because the actors went all SJW, and I no longer enjoyed the re-runs on TBS because Samantha Bee promos, totally icky. She got away with calling Ivanka a c**t, yet Roseanne lost her livelihood making a snarky tweet?

I just tuned in last night to see how Chuck Lorre would end it, the same producer who ended Charlie forever by dropping a piano on his head. Lorre started out with the early Roseanne shows as a writer. He has a gift, but he’s moving on with Netflix and the Obamas. Idiot.

    • elliesmom says:

I admit I saw the premise of TBBT when it first came out, and I decided not to ever watch it. I lived in the world of young male scientists and engineers. Very few of them were socially awkward or had trouble getting dates. All of my male engineering friends were married before they were 30 and had children so I’m guessing they had figured the sex thing out. The show appeared to me to be based on a silly stereotype that just has little basis in reality. I doubt Bill Gates had to ask Melinda twice to marry him. Not being a big sitcom fan anyway, I just passed on it the same way I pass on the ones pushing the SJW themes. Let the writers make fun of people all they want. I don’t have to support them.

      • Myiq2xu™ says:

I was never a scientist or engineer but I was a nerdy geek who was too smart for his own good when I was younger so I could relate to the show. (I didn’t blossom into the smooth, handsome stud you see today until I reached my 30’s.) But I hate having religion shoved down my throat and Leftism is a godless religion.

OTOH, back when I was killing bugs I hated media depictions of exterminators.

I was in an attic crawlspace in Los Altos (next to Mountain View) looking for signs of rats when I shined my flashlight on a big pair of glowing eyes. The lady had a raccoon problem, but for a brief moment I thought I was looking at a giant rat.

A giant rat that was just a few feet from me while I was crawling on my hands and knees in a hot, tiny crawlspace. I came out of there so fast the lady thought I fell off my ladder.

    • lateblum says:

Tbh, I have only seen TBBT once or twice as I’m not a big fan of sitcoms either. And 12 years ago when it started, I worked late every day and didn’t get home from work until nearly time for the 10 pm news casts. Also, I had no way to record any programs until about 3 years ago after I retired. But there was much ado about this last show and I wanted to watch it. I liked it. Saw no SJW-ing or anything that was particularly offensive,

Does TBS have the reruns of this show? I think one of the premium stations may also have repeats. HULU or one of the others.

    • Myiq2xu™ says:

I saw the pilot, liked it, then never saw another episode because I started working nights. I had a VCR back then but you had to manually program it to record and I a kid, a wife, and a drinking problem.

I was getting out of the army and we were staying with my wife’s brother and his wife when I saw the pilot. There was just one tv in his house and he got all pissy when I wanted to watch the pilot and he sat there fuming. Months later he started watching the series and he was pissed at himself because he didn’t pay attention during the pilot.

That was back in the days when if you missed an episode of a show you might not get another chance to see it unless it went into syndication. Back then a show needed 100 episodes recorded to make syndication. (Star Trek was the sole exception).

Some of the earliest tv shows were shot live on the air and there was never any save. Then for years shows were recorded in a format that doesn’t last long. So they have badly degraded copies or none at all – kind of like a copy of a copy of a bad vcr recording.
