Some people have said that 2016 was the Year of the Angry White Male. This is supposed to explain how Trump won. There is a grain of truth to that idea. Disgruntled middle and lower-class whites were the key to Trump’s victory, and a lot of those people were men. Victor Davis Hanson wonders what people are so pissed about.

Why Are the Western Middle Classes So Angry?

What is going on with the unending Brexit drama, the aftershocks of Donald Trump’s election and the “yellow vests” protests in France? What drives the growing estrangement of southern and eastern Europe from the European Union establishment? What fuels the anti-EU themes of recent European elections and the stunning recent Australian re-election of conservatives?

Put simply, the middle classes are revolting against Western managerial elites. The latter group includes professional politicians, entrenched bureaucrats, condescending academics, corporate phonies and propagandistic journalists.

I’m gonna skip down to the end:

In matters of immigration, the story was much the same. Western elites encouraged the migration of indigent, unskilled and often poorly educated foreign nationals who would ensure that government social programs — and the power of the elites themselves — grew. The champions of open borders made sure that such influxes did not materially affect their own neighborhoods, schools and privileged way of life.

Elites masked their hypocrisy by virtue-signaling their disdain for the supposedly xenophobic, racist or nativist middle classes. Yet the non-elite have experienced firsthand the impact on social programs, schools and safety from sudden, massive and often illegal immigration from Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia into their communities.

As for trade, few still believe in “free” trade when it remains so unfair. Why didn’t elites extend to China their same tough-love lectures about global warming, or about breaking the rules of trade, copyrights and patents?

The middle classes became nauseated by the constant elite trashing of their culture, history and traditions, including the tearing down of statues, the Trotskyizing of past heroes, the renaming of public buildings and streets, and, for some, the tired and empty whining about “white privilege.”

If Western nations were really so bad, and so flawed at their founding, why were millions of non-Westerners risking their lives to reach Western soil?

How was it that elites themselves had made so much money, had gained so much influence, and had enjoyed such material bounty and leisure from such a supposedly toxic system — benefits that they were unwilling to give up despite their tired moralizing about selfishness and privilege?

In the next few years, expect more grassroots demands for the restoration of the value of citizenship. There will be fewer middle-class apologies for patriotism and nationalism. The non-elite will become angrier about illegal immigration, demanding a return to the idea of measured, meritocratic, diverse and legal immigration.

VDH is obviously a conservative Republican. If he was a liberal Democrat he would say we were pissed about black people getting ahead. Or women. Or gays. Or gay black women.

Speaking just for myself, I don’t give a flying fickle finger of fate whether people who aren’t like me (white, male, straight) do better than me. I wish them all the success in the world. I just don’t want their success to come at my expense. I want a level playing field. I don’t want the government to give anyone an advantage.

I do resent the attacks on my culture and heritage. I believe it was Reagan who said liberals always blame America first. That’s true. But they also blame white people second, and men third. They hate Christians and straight people too.

I’m also sick and tired of being force-fed Leftist morality and ideology. And the manipulation that leaves us with no options. Take immigration for example.

According to the Left, immigration is an unqualified good. “Diversity is our strength” is what they say. Well, who decided that diversity was more important than unity? Did we hold a nationwide vote? As far as refugees and asylum seekers, is the only way we can help them to admit them to our country and give them American citizenship? Should assimilation be the goal for all new immigrants?

I want a government that takes a knee to the will of the people, not a government that demands that we take a knee to it.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, —That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

    U Mad.??…The Oberlin trial jury sure was…they hit Oberlin with $33 million in punitive damages and attorney fees. (The $33 million likely to be reduced by the court to the State max of 2 X compensatory $22 million)

    The jury in the Gibsons v. Oberlin trial has awarded the Gibsons more than what is allowed by law plus attorneys’ fees. So at least $33.4 million if the judge imposes the cap.

      Allowed by law….according to LI, it’s not a hard cap but this judge seems to make tight rulings, perhaps to limit grounds for appeals. The jury did send a message with the $33. (BTW, I hope this sends a message to the Covington Attis……don’t settle, go for the kill)

      Interesting comment at LI….the possible exception to the punitive damages cap is if the conduct was intentional and Oberlin was found guilty of “intentional interference” along with other charges.

      If ever there was proof needed of how the elite feel about the folks in the interior of the country, this is it. We were living in the inner suburbs of Boston when Elliesdad was transferred to Chicago, I remember the reaction of some of our friends because we’d be living in the Midwest. I had to remind them Chicago is a much larger metropolitan area than Boston, and I was sure they had running water and indoor plumbing.

    Been binge watching “24”, and there are scenes of imminent terrorist gas attacks on L.A., but the “elites” say they can’t tell The People because there would be chaos. I was shouting at the TV, “just tell them there’s an imminent gas attack, so don’t go where there’s lots of people!”

    There were also scenes where, because law enforcement was stretched too thin, there was rioting and looting. Again I’m yelling at the tv, “those are criminals and domestic enemies! That’s where Americans should exercise the 2nd Amendment!”

    Americans don’t need law enforcement to keep them from assaulting and looting their neighbors.

    Criminals and domestic enemies would be a small percentage of the population, were it not for leftist policies.

    Hong Kong Cardinal asks for prayers, condemns violence

    With tensions running high in Hong Kong, Cardinal John Tong asks Catholics to pray for the situation in the city, and calls for mutual respect and dialogue between the government and protesters.

    Massive protests turned violent in Hong Kong this week, when demonstrators tried to storm government buildings to block debate on a controversial law that would allow extradition to mainland China.
    Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters on Wednesday. Seventy-two people were injured, including 21 police officers.
    Cardinal John Tong Hon, Apostolic Administrator of Hong Kong, told Vatican Radio on Thursday that acts of violence should not be part of civil action.
    “If the people are using violence,” he noted, these acts “should be condemned.”

    The Cardinal is in Rome this week accompanying an interreligious group on a visit to the Vatican.
    He said the leaders of 6 religions had discussed the situation and agreed on a three-pronged appeal.
    Appeal for mutual respect
    First, they call for respect for individual freedoms. “If [protesters] go out to express their opinions, they should be respected,” said Cardinal Tong.
    Second, Hong Kong’s religious leaders distance themselves from the violence that has erupted in the city.
    Cardinal Tong said it was his personal opinion that violence should be condemned. But the interreligious group, he said, agreed on the need to oppose violent attitudes, including “hurting other people, the use of violence, and throwing stones against the police.”
    The Cardinal asked the people of Hong Kong “to try to maintain stability and the order of society”.
    Third, the interreligious group – representing Catholic, Protestant Christian, Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Islam – ask Hong Kong’s government and the protesters to sit down together to talk about the issue “so that through the dialogue we try to reach a consensus”.
    Stability and peace
    The goal, said Cardinal Tong, is to help Hong Kong “to be stable” and for the people “to enjoy peace and tranquility.”
    Cardinal Tong ended with a plea for all Catholics to pray for the situation in Hong Kong.

    Estimations for “free” tuition run as high as $75 billion in taxpayer cash. Sanders also supports a 90% tax bracket and redistribution of wealth.

    Other Democratic candidates are also promising a lot of “free” stuff. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) wants to just give away cash. Harris in October 2018 unveiled a plan in which families making less than $100,000 a year could receive up to $500 a month, or $6,000 a year, and individuals making less than $50,000 could get $250 a month — all from taxpayers.
