Apparently, Mexicans don’t care much for illegal immigrants either.
Quite a few heads were turned in Washington, DC when the Mexican government made some significant new immigration enforcement concessions in the face of tariff threats from President Trump. Why would they cave to demands that weren’t playing terribly well politically north of the border — especially if those demands put them on the hook for more concrete action?
One piece of the puzzle that has been largely absent in media analyses of this broader issue is Mexican public opinion. One of my fellow panelists on Fox’s Special Report program last night directed me to recent polling by a major Mexican newspaper showing significant public opposition to the migrants passing through Mexico in an effort to enter the United States:
By nearly a two-to-one margin, Mexican voters favor the government preventing the passage of migrants who enter the country without documents, i.e. illegally. As Lane notes, close to half support immediate expulsion, with another slice of the electorate supporting jailing the migrants for breaking Mexican law. Very few support allowing the migrants to head north freely. A majority also opposes a plan to grant this population work visas.
This is really weird. For years the Left has been telling us that only racist xenophobes oppose illegal immigration. They told us that Trump only campaigned on the issue in order to pander to white supremacists.
I guess it makes a difference if the illegal immigrants are your own unemployed riff-raff who are leaving or if they are somebody else’s unemployed riff-raff who are moving into your country.
As for the picture at the top of this post, only a complete idiot would blame Trump for those deaths.
As news of the image spread, presidential candidates blamed the deaths on the administration.
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris called the situation “inhumane.”
“These families seeking asylum are often fleeing extreme violence,” she tweeted. “And what happens when they arrive? Trump says, ‘Go back to where you came from.’ That is inhumane. Children are dying. This is a stain on our moral conscience.”
Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke said “Trump is responsible for these deaths.”
“As his administration refuses to follow our laws — preventing refugees from presenting themselves for asylum at our ports of entry — they cause families to cross between ports, ensuring greater suffering & death. At the expense of our humanity, not to the benefit of our safety,” he said on Twitter.
Well, they were fleeing war and oppression, right?
Ramírez said her son and his family left El Salvador on April 3 and spent about two months at a shelter in Tapachula, near Mexico’s border with Guatemala.
“I begged them not to go, but he wanted to scrape together money to build a home,” Ramírez said.
“They hoped to be there a few years and save up for the house.”
So if they were economic immigrants then who told them to apply for asylum? Is the recent upsurge in bogus asylum claims causing the delay in processing genuine claims?
The Associated Press has a policy against showing graphic photos of dead bodies. Why was that policy ignored in this case?
