It’s a rainy Sunday morning here in the woods of Rho D’Island, It was a beautiful fall day yesterday. I looked at the leaves all over both porches and covering the driveway, but instead of doing something about them, I unleashed Ellie and took her for a long walk in the woods. I woke up about 4 am to the sound of rain on the roof. The leaves are still on the porches and the driveway, but now there are a lot more of them. I’m glad I didn’t waste my time cleaning them up yesterday. That’s kind of how I feel about killing off terrorists. Even when we kill or capture them, it just rains down more of them.

If someone I personally dislike attends a function, say the current Virginia governor or Marion Barry or well in swampland this happens A LOT, I simply either do a very very lukewarm arm movement – not really even a clap but good enough to keep people from asking one about it or find something absolutely fascinating nearby that I must check out and ooooppps missed the whole intro of person and just make non comment small talk when I refocus. No one even notices. Now a favorite that I have seen is the lost contact lens. That keeps a whole group of people nearby from making fools of themselves by showing they have the manners of a three year olds.
A couple of visits to NYC over the decades, there was a Clinton and Obama “visit” I was near. I waved to both, I never thought to grab my lady parts and scream at the sky.

From fighting with the butchers’ union over selling meat in grocery stores after 6 pm (you already couldn’t buy meat on Sundays anywhere in Cook County), to Puerto Rican riots, and snow emergencies he couldn’t handle, he was everything wrong with machine politics. Where Daley at least could make the city function, Bilandic was incompetent at both running the machine and blocking it.
Elliesdad went to work for Donald Rumsfeld, and when we arrived to look for a place to live, we were given a list of “safe neighborhoods”. Back home in Boston the folks in Southie were throwing rocks at school buses so we had a pretty good idea of what “safe” meant, but ED’s new coworkers assured him that while he was absolutely right about where the lines had been drawn, “safe” also meant physically safe. We ended up in the northwest burbs with ED working in Skokie. It was during the battle the Nazis fought to march through town. The march never happened in Skokie, but they did march in Chicago.
My personal memories of living there are filled with wonderful neighbors, trips to Navy Pier and the Brookfield Zoo, and time away from family that gave us the opportunity to grow up and form a tight little family of our own. But it also left me with a rather jaded view of Democrat politics. My dad was the town chairman of the Democrat Party, and history says I should have grown up a solid Dem. But living in Cook County turned me into an Independent voter for the next 45 years. The current crop of Democrats might make me a Republican yet. Go, Astros!

I finally got to visit Chicago in ’91, when my daughter was 11 and our podunk ice rink signed up for ISIA Nationals. Any skater with a pulse and a check could enter. I was, okay the kid has her Waltz Jump, never been to Chicago, and doubt I could get a hotel room cheaper…..Let’s do Chicago!
Most parents drove the 22 hours from Norfolk, the rest of us took the Norfolk-Chicago 24 hour train trip, and what a trip that was. The event was spread over 5 rinks in the Chicago area, we stayed in Skokie with a car rental. No events on the last day, so we grabbed the EL into downtown, passing miles and miles of backed up traffic. Spent a cool day in ChiTown, Navy Pier of course!
I returned in 2007 for the YK07 Nitwork Nation at the McCormick Center. I did the rest of Chicago from there. 😀 Moral of the story: I do use “conference” rates to grab the cheapest hotel rooms in the best parts of the blue cities. Nobody ever misses you #Winning !
