DAY ONE:
Yesterday the governor of California, Gavin “Gruesome” Newsom ordered millions of people to go home and stay there. If President Donald J. Trump had given such an order there would be protests and lawsuits. But since Gov. Gruesome is a Democrat there has been nary a peep. I can’t tell you how many people are defying the Governor with Great Hair because I am afraid to go outside and look.
I don’t have any constitutional issues with the order, at least not to the extent that the order is both temporary and was made in response to a genuine public health emergency. My inner libertarian is screaming “This is how liberty dies!” but this order falls within the legitimate police powers of government. If the Hu Flung Pu Flu was a huge fire nobody would question the pretty-boy governor’s ability to order an evacuation. Instead of ordering us to evacuate he is telling us to stay-cuate.
Meanwhile, Mom is getting cabin fever.

My husband just called and said one of his customers he visited said the National Guard have been forming convoys…he thinks it’s just a matter of time before they are called out in Maryland…damn Chinese government. DH works for a utility company here, considered essential personnel. Today he was given a “road pass” to give to any one who might question why he was out. Maybe it’s just a contingency measure, but it feels like something is up.
I tend to agree something is up. Shutting down the entire economy has got to be the dumbest plan I could ever imagine. We pay people to be in these agencies to have plans and yet they never planned for what to do in a pandemic. It’s just stunning to me. I expected them to start putting up the temporary hospitals. But no, instead they run out of everything, can manage a lab test that works and shut down the economy after making a bunch of health care workers sick. I think we can safely cut all these agencies as we could improvise this plan.

I live in Manhattan. we are not confined to our homes. We can shop, go for a run in the patk, look in on loved ones, care for their pets. Food stores, pharmacies, banks and laundromats are open. Restaurants are open only for takeout, many bakeries, pizza joints allow you to walk in and get something to go. Restaurants are now allowed to have drinks to go or take out with your meal.

Jentz, he used the word “heed” instead of “follow”. Heed gives it another meaning. More of a suggestion. He may have meant it as a command but that word does not make it mandatory. Watch for a correction.

There is a mumbo-jumbo written order, and it uses the word “heed”. I’ve read “most” of the “order” and it’s obtuse enough that people will probably follow it, but all they really have to for now is pay attention to it.
Well they’ve suggested it for the last 10 days what I’ve seen is people selfishly saying well I have to go to work because I’m more important than the other people and the problem is is that the disease spreads very quickly and we don’t have enough resources to help people if they get sick. I am certainly one of the most independent people you will ever meet but I also have a lot of doctors in my family and I believe that it is foolish not to heed what the doctors are telling us. I am not talking about staying in your home for months I am talking about not going out unless you have to avoiding large groups etcetera etcetera so that we keep the disease and it’s spread to a minimum. If we don’t the government will have to get involved and all of it makes Trump look bad and there is no one in the world I love more than that man. He will be blamed so at the very least I think following the CDC guidelines is called for at the moment. That doesn’t mean I believe the media it means I believe the doctors and the nonpartisan doctors specifically. While this disease may have a low kill rate it has a very high infection rate which brings with it a very high-cost so all of you all of us have a vested interest in stopping this disease in its tracks.
That’s the problem. We can’t have nice things because a few assholes don’t have any sense. All week at work, people were sitting or standing next to each other. I actually pointed at people and said “social distance!” This is why lock downs happen.
No, lockdown happens because there are a lot of little Napoleons, and a lot of people who are afraid. They’re easy to control. But not everyone believes there’s any reason to stay home. If people believed the media, they’d listen, but they don’t, and this whole thing is only likely to make it worse. When the Marathon Bombers were driving through the city of Boston shooting folks, talking down rent-a-cops, and the Boston and Cambridge police got on the air and asked people to stay inside until they took the bastards out, people did because it wasn’t a politician or a TV personality asking. Folks might not like the Boston Police all that much, but “We want to shoot the guys, and we don’t want you to get shot” made perfect sense to the folks on the street. Were there a few idiots walking around who wanted to watch? Always some dumb asses in every crowd. For months people from outside of Boston debated whether the cops had the right to ask people to “shelter in place”. Note I said ask. No one suggested people were forced to do it.
We live in a world where we’re told climate change is going to make humans extinct in our life time, but if we turn over every aspect of our lives to the government, they can fix it. Is it any wonder some people don’t believe they need to stay home for what looks like a flu bug to them? Half of them think it’s bunk, and the other half believes they’re going to be dead in 12 years anyway. Spring break for me was an opportunity to work a 40 hour week so I could earn enough money to have life’s little necessities when school started up again so I never spent it on the beach. But if I was a young person who could afford to, and I’d been told I wasn’t going to die from the virus, it was going to kill off the generation I’d been told had selfishly ruined the world for the rest of us, and we’re all going to be dead in 12 years anyway, I’d head for the beach, and I wouldn’t worry about hanging out in my favorite bar.
Here, in Chicagoland the news people are exploring what the governor is legally permitted to do and not do. In my little town, north of the city limit, we have had the directive to stay in our homes except for trips to the grocery/pharmacies, doctors/dentists, individual walks for exercise and to exercise our dogs, for several days.
The governor has declared a directive starting this evening, to stay in “place”. The mayor of Chicago has said people out on the streets may be arrested and charged for “obstructing justice”. Parks and playground will be closed. How they’ll do that I don’t know. Are there enough LEOs to guard every park and playground?
On another note, dd#2 is being dc’d from hospital today! I’ve asked her to call me from the ambulance so I can drive over to the NH and wave hello to her when she is unloaded from the ambulance. Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers for her.

Denise, the concept of interneting is somehow really hard for most older people to suddenly pick up. I’m 10+++ years older than the rest of a men’s group at church. The leader is a retired weatherman in his late 60’s. We are the only two that are computer savvy. (I helped write up the computer requirements for CA DMV when we first went automated in the early 80’s). The rest of the men in the group can barely use email. They just don’t “get it”.

I got into a conversation with my niece online. She’s usually pretty conservative, but she was leaning toward lockdowns being necessary to protect people from their own stupidity. Her mom, my ex-sister-in-law, jumped in to say it’s the government’s responsibility to take care of the people. I know I was being a bitch, but I suggested that since obesity is such a health hazard, taxes our medical resources, and costs us all of us a lot of money, the government should regulate what everybody eats. Now, my ex-sister-in-law is grossly overweight. She “left the room”.
I don’t for a minute believe the government should do that, but it’s interesting to see where the line gets drawn for different people. My niece objected when I said since 102 people die in cars everyday, the government should ban private cars. One of her friends, an anti-vaxxer, got steamed when I said everyone should be required by law to get a flu shot. The argument for the lockdown was to “calm things down so people will stop doing runs on the grocery store”. They didn’t seem to get that the runs on the grocery store, the toilet paper idiocy, is not because of the virus, but because of the fear.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. If there was no lock down and thousands of people die, the Dems would blame the lack of a lock down. If the people don’t revolt over this quarantine and it happens again, obviously the people are okay with it.
I think they’ll only be willing short-term. it’s like a big snowstorm. Right now, everyone can pretend they’re in a dystopia, but soon they’ll get bored. Also, the people this is really hurting are the blue-collars, and the advocates for shelter at home don’t care about them.
And in NC, there are limits to the practice. I drove out to mail something, and a local driving range was full. No social distancing there!

Watching Tucker’s show. He pointed out an interesting fact. The virus is running rampant in countries that do not have malaria. In those countries where malaria is endemic and many of the population has taken anti-malarial drugs, the virus is almost nonexistent. No one knows if that means anything, maybe deserves a look.
Correlation is not causation. Countries with malaria outbreaks are generally hot and humid. That environment tends to kill these viruses quickly on surfaces and prevents transmission.
Except we’re hot and humid and it’s here in Oz – but we don’t have malaria so we don’t have a history with the drugs.
It’s hot and humid in Florida. It’s been in the mid 80’s where I am, which means it’s probably upper 80’s or maybe even low 90’s in south Florida, yet they have lots of cases. They have what appears to be unexplained cases that they think are community spread.
Correlation is not causation. Africa has multiple national and tribal borders, which limits movement. Africa has fewer large cities. Comparing two places based on the level of Malaria and extrapolating the use of one drug and it’s impact on a disease we don’t know all that much about is not real science.
I haven’t heard anything about increases of cases related to population density. I am sure someone has taken that into consideration as a factor, but I haven’t heard about it yet. There must be some stats somewhere from previous flu studies.
Using drugs that have been on the market for years and whose side effects are well-known and minimal to treat a disease when there’s only a suspicion it works and not proof may not be “science”, but it is “medicine”. It fits into the “do no harm” category. It can’t hurt, and it might help while we wait for the science.
I certainly think that the anti-Malaria drug makes sense as a treatment since it is an anti-viral. I just think it’s junk science to claim people can’t get coronavirus at all just because they live in a country with Malaria outbreaks.
No one on Tucker’s show claimed that. They were talking about using anti-malarial drugs as treatment and that was just an observation about countries where malaria is endemic.
On the same level I don’t see anything wrong with the people who want to take vitamins or practice eating regimens to stop Corona virus. Is it proven science? No. But it might help and it certainly has a placebo effect as well as people want to feel like they are doing something to help. These things give people something to concentrate on that isn’t harmful and could be positive. Science isn’t the only thing people need in this situation.

This was in response to him say that he wasn’t aware of a shortage of surgical masks. She was told today that her hospital has less than a weeks supply of masks and the administration is encouraging people to sew their own cloth mask. That is some cray shit!
I’ve also been reading papers on this and they are frightening. The virus “cell” has a protien spike on that essentially impales the healthy cell and then binds to it 10 times stronger than other SARS viruses. Top it off, it has some kind of enzyme receptor on it, and that makes it likely to spread through the body, leading to these organ failures we’ve seen in the worst cases. Heart, liver, kidney failure all possible. Viral load also matters, which is why they’re telling us to clean and sanitize everything.

There are people working on antibody tests. I’ve read of various people working on such testing.
Clearly there is already some mechanism to do so, because scientists are working on an IVIG mix from plasma as a treatment option for critical patients. The first step of that would be to determine if recovered patients developed antibodies.

The panic testing needs to stop. How many of the people lining up have symptoms of *anything*? Most of the time, the virus will be mild, so if everyone would stay home and NOT PANIC, it would wash out and the hospitals would have enough equipment.

I don’t know of panic testing in New York. Right now, you need to get approval from a doctor for a COVID-19 test. As far as the hospitals, many of them are restricting access. However, you can’t stop people from being dumbasses.

Wife, (Surgeon/Critical care/ICU director) and I trying to figure out why the panic…her hospital ordered 40 more mechanical ventilators for total of more than 100 and have a plan to be able to staff 60 ICU beds. BTW, they will run out of surgical masks in five days and administration is encouraging people to sew cloth masks as a backup. (That’s some crazy sh*t) Also decision made not to do CPR on proven COVID positive patients due to high risk of wide spread staff contamination. Wife just read that Italy is not intubating COVID patients older than 60 years old.
Best I can tell is that Italy has scared the shit out of the people making decisions.

That’s why we need freedom of health care as opposed to government health care. I’m not paying into any system that restricts health care to people my age. In a gov run monopoly, you have no choice, old people are forced to pay for services they can’t have. Free market…..we go to another plan and take our money with us.
