Stick It In And Break It Off

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the SOTU.

On one hand, we have some rational and reasonable Democrats talking rationally and reasonably about why selecting a replacement for the Notorious RBG should not take place until after a new POTUS is inaugurated. These rational and reasonable Democrats include Mitt Romney, Princess Lisa “Merkin” Murkowski, and the Ladies of The Bulwark.

On the other hand, we have some Democrats threatening to peacefully protest America to death if they don’t get their way.

So I ask myself, what would the Democrats do if the situation was reversed?

A: They would stick it in and break it off, and never feel a twinge of guilt or shame.

If we had a Democrat POTUS and a 50/50 Senate that was only controlled by Democrats due to the VP tiebreaker, and the day after a landslide victory by the GOP a conservative SCOTUS justice dropped dead, the Democrats would jam thru a replacement during the lame-duck session with a confirmation vote of 51-50. And the news media would back them 110%.

So what should PDJT and Cocaine Mitch do about the vacancy caused by the death of RBG?

A: They should stick it in and break it off. Then in Trump’s second term they should focus on defenestrating all RINOs from the GOP. Disloyalty should be punished.

In the Saul Alinsky playbook, you criticize the opposition for perceived hypocrisy in order to make them look like they have no real beliefs. The fact is that the Senate knew they could run out the clock in 2016. It’s not like Obama didn’t nominate someone. But there were enough Republicans that it wasn’t going to go through. This time, it could (depending on who turns tail)

This is a situation where Donald Trump is in his element. He understands there is winning and there is losing. Putting up a nominee and having her confirmed is a win. Actually, putting up a nominee and having her held up is also potentially a win because Republicans who think voting for Joe Biden is a temporary hardship to defeat Trump will have to deal with the Rougue’s Gallery that could be put on the bench by Kamala Harris.

I know this is OT. But I think you might have mentioned a few days ago that you had lost some family members last year. I meant to tell you how sorry I was to hear it, but sadly I did not. Please accept my condolences for those uncles who have gone from your life. I hope you and your family have many happy memories to comfort you.

    • Mt.Laurel says:

Work has been a bit crazy so am way behind on reading posts .have sort of been glancing here and there. Missed this entirely.. I know what it like to lose several family members over a short time span. Or at the same time. It takes a long while to adjust and reset. Warmest Sympathies to you and all of your family.

Oh yes he would. He’d take it and then never lift a finger while on the court. I think his ambition and narcissism is greater than anyone knows.

          • swanspirit says:

His ambition and narcissism is greater than anyone knows, for sure. I totally agree with that, but he would still have to show up for a very long time, and I don’t think he would do it.
He really is too damned lazy.

          • taw46 says:

He would have to show up for a lifetime, 9-10 months a year. And he couldn’t drag Valerie to the SC with him.

He could retire when it became too much work for him. And then have bragging rights forever.
But I agree with you and Swannie. He’s too lazy to actually take it on much as his personality and ego might want.

    • Constance says:

If she even left that statement then she asked the impossible. We have laws and the elected officials have duties. President Trump is obligated to nominate a new justice. The
Senate can play what ever games they choose. Is it true that if Trump nominates a current Senator they can be confirmed by a vote without hearings? Because that would mean he could throw out the name of a woman judge, let the Dems beat the shit out of her, if she withdraws then name a current Senator as long as their replacement would be chosen by a Republican governor and There is you conservative judge.

      • lateblum says:

A politician would do that. I don’t know if t.rump would do it unless really pressured by his advisors. There’s a part of me that would like to see it, but another part that says no.

      • Somebody says:

I don’t think she made the statement. Were those her sentiments? Probably, along with she’d like to burn Trump at the stake🙄 I’m sure she was bitter, she gambled and lost. Her narcissism got the best of her, she wanted to be replaced by the first female POTUS. She wanted to dictate the terms of her exit, she wanted to cement her legacy. She wanted to be in control, God saw it differently.

Sorry Ruth you gambled and lost. You got to know when to hold em’, know when to fold em’, know when to walk away, know when to run.

The main reason I don’t think she made the statement is because of the wording. “A new President is installed”. Installed? We elect our Presidents. They are sworn in. They take office. They are not installed. Referring to a new President being installed does not sound like the wordsmithing or even casual conversation of a legal mind. Unless she knew something we didn’t, the coup rumors are real and the deep state will install someone else no matter our wishes 🤔

Would that qualify as Biden’s picking a black woman?

    • Mt.Laurel says:

Did not he and wife give up thief law licenses? I mean I know technically one does not have to practice law to be nominated but that also brings the expectation that the nominee is not an attorney.

But give the huge ego he has, and which has been fed constantly, I am sure he thinks he could run the court by himself. Just left the monies do the work while he lazes about chain smoking and feeling mellow from his recreational activities.

MOO , I am sure, thinks she deserves a spot as well.

While it’s not getting any coverage in the major media anywhere, people have been posting photos and videos of boat and biker parades all over Rhode Island this past month. There hasn’t been a Republican in statewide office since 2006. The Democrats control both houses of the RI legislature. Only one small city has a Republican mayor. But every weekend there’s an enthusiastic group of people out there organized by a grassroots effort showing their support for Trump. The boat parade on August 23rd from Newport to Bristol had over a thousand boats. There has been a boat parade somewhere every weekend for a month. This weekend the biker parade for Trump was a couple of miles long. No exaggeration. Conservative estimates. They have another one planned for next weekend. There are over 4000 members in the Rhode Islanders for Trump FB group. The TV stations and the Providence newspaper are all but ignoring this. Given how solidly blue RI’s reputation is, people who are not looking for this probably assume there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell of RI going for Trump. You have to look in small local rags. I’m in the “Not so sure about that” group. But even more so, it makes me doubt we’re seeing all the enthusiasm for Trump that’s out there. When Trump shows up at something, the media has to cover it, but he’s getting big crowds when he’s not even there, and the media is silent.

    • Somebody says:

It’s entirely possible to flip RI, but you’d have to shake the bushes. Hillary won with 54.4%, she had about 70,000 more votes than Trump who only took 38.9%. There was a 60% voter turnout in 2016, so it’s possible, but 60% is a pretty good turnout.

Who knows, is there still time to register voters? The secret to Trump’s success in 2016 was finding people that rarely vote or had never registered and getting them to the polls.

      • elliesmom says:

The last day to register is October 4th, and I was surprised to see you can register online or by mail. When I registered 4 years ago, I had to do it in person at townhall or at the DMV. The RI for Trump group is a lot more active than the Republican Party in RI. I would guess they’re doing voter registration. When I joined, they asked if I was registered to vote in RI.

Seems rather typical for profs these days. I have had to deal with so many that have never grown beyond their middle school selves and hide out from reality in academia. They would go to pieces if the had to actually work and getting published is now a huge joke. And of course if you read the gobble gook drivel, they love to reference themselves in the footnotes. Sometimes they even forget to toss someone else work into the mix to try and give the appearance of having actually done research.

  28. elliesmom says:

The one thing I think is really bogus is the excuse “voting has already started”. Anyone whose vote will be based on who replaces Bader-Ginsburg can wait to vote. Anyone who votes weeks before an election has already said nothing is going to change his mind. I don’t want Kamala Harris making any decision more important than which shoes to wear. There is nothing that could make me vote for a nasty man who has dementia issues. How the Supreme Court drama plays out won’t change that. I could vote today regardless. Probably half of the “undecided voters” could, too. It has been my experience doing GOTV calling most people who are “undecided” are not deciding between the candidates but are undecided about whether to bother voting or not. The fight over the Supreme Court seat could help those folks decide to vote, but it’s unlikely to change how they vote.

In 2016, the nuclear option had not yet been extended to Supreme Court Justices. There were 48 Democrats in the Senate when Obama nominated Merrick Garland. It would have needed 12 Republican senators to vote to confirm him. The votes just weren’t there. When Trump was elected, the Republicans extended the nuclear option to include the Supreme Court. It was one of those piles of poop the Democrats left around to step in themselves when they were sure they were going to be in power for the next 100 years. All of this, “But Merrick Garland!” is bullshit. He was never going to make it through the confirmation hearings. It would have been a waste of the Senate’s time and probably deleterious to Garland’s stellar reputation. He probably would have been accused of killing puppies. Oh wait, it’s only the Democrats that trash the reputations of Court nominees. I am so sick of history started yesterday for liberals unless they’re holding people accountable for what their great-great-great-great grandparents did.
