My mom was 4’10” and weighed less than 100 lbs. One of my older brothers was 6’2″ and weighed about 170 lbs. One day he dared her to hit him and wouldn’t let up. My iPad is dead. It died sometime yesterday afternoon while i was out running errands. I can turn it on and turn it off. That’s it. I won’t be on twitter (thank goodness) or here much until it is repaired or replaced. I can’t get to the Apple Store until sometime next week. I may be able to check in on my phone once in a while. It’s probably for the best as I feel sick from the election and the way of the world lately. bbl

I was able to get the larger iPad I bought for mom back up and running using hard reset and keeping it plugged into the charger. It was the battery that died. If that is the problem, it’s is around 100 for a new one. Typing in it now over a year later. Used it all summer to stream background noise with less heat than having the tv on all day while I worked. still miffed CBS took old programs like Perry Mason off the services so they could charge yet another fee. So I went with midsummer murders, Columbo on IMDb.
I didn’t realize you could replace the battery. That’s great news!

The Supreme Court won’t even listen to the issues let alone make a difficult but truthful call. Bureaucracies are like this. They all act like there are no problems. See nothing, hear nothing. Until finally someone gets through with a verbalization of the problems and issues. And at that time all the little lemmings turn on that person and act like she/he created the problem. I do think the Texas suit nudged the lemmings a little off their collective stupid and it caused a good many to stand up and take a side.

Just wanted to say it is great to have ya’ll here at TCH . I have been lurking in and off but It’s been a topsy-turvy lately even without the swamp crap. My boss had/had a detached retina, coworker had to have cardiac surgery so I am running around and ferrying things to people’s houses and picking up other items after making the bi weekly trip to the office. Also uploading paperwork that got lost in the mess. Most have been understanding and now have options for scan and digital signatures.
In a way the Supreme Court members most likely saw they had to take the stance they did on that single ruling. It is far more complex than most realize and they need to follow the law/constitution. That is their job. Well some of them understand that is their job. Others think their job is to follow the dictates of the swamp. Not well stated but I am sure you know what I mean.

Mathematics and music are the same language. One is the written version and the other the spoken. A lot of engineers, especially computer guys, would like to be professional musicians, but there’s a risk you have to be willing to take to do it. Very few professional musicians make much money at it. ED worked with a guy who had played backup guitar and keyboard for Chuck Berry, but when he acquired a wife and child, life of the road working for not much money lost its appeal. He was never going to be Chuck Berry, but he was one hell of a computer designer. And a lot of fun at parties.
One of the musicians in Queen has math, physics degrees and a ph.d in astronomy. Makes sense how they made their music with such unique sounds. 🙂

Music is parsing time, and filling linear time with either sound or silence. The full rest (1 beat of silence) is the most eloquent musical phrase insofar as it isolates and underscores the following sound(s).
Its also a useful trick in implementing true ‘tempo rubato’ (stealing time) which ‘borrows’ a beat from the next measure and fills it with silence, giving the listener the illusion of changing the tempo when in fact the piece is constructed in strict metronomic tempo. Chopin was a master at using that effectively, Liszt not so much.
For our TCH scholars. Jill Biden’s disertation for her doctorate. This thread is tearing it apart but here’s a link to the actual paper you can decided for yourself.
She writes better than Michelle Obama does. Which says more about whether an ivy league education is really worth the big bucks than it does about the two women. Biden’s doctorate is in educational leadership, which is the doctorate pursued by people who want to become school principals or superintendents. I didn’t read the whole thing, but her dissertation follows the template for one in that discipline. Identify an issue, research its history, perform some kind of a survey, then assemble your data and analyze it. While doctoral theses are supposed to be unique, in this field Biden could do “original research” by focusing in on one issue at one particular school. Research about why people drop out of college is abundant. Research on the value added by the community colleges could fill a small library. But surveys of a particular group of students at one particular community college might be original to Biden.
This is not the kind of doctoral work that people put years of their lives into. She could have done the historical research in a weekend, and if someone at the college greased the skids to get her people willing to fill out her survey, she could have finished that in a couple of weeks. The results of her analysis were not at all surprising. In the engineering world, they’d fall into the “No, shit, Sherlock!” category. However, there is also a lot of coursework that would have gone into Biden’s degree. She would have taken courses in educational law, employment law, educational philosophy, etc. While her dissertation is pretty pedestrian, it doesn’t mean her doctoral degree wouldn’t qualify her to be a school principal. What surprised me when I saw Biden’s history is why she didn’t pursue a doctorate in special education since that’s the group of kids she says she’s most interested in. A job as a school principal does come with a bigger paycheck, but she was already married to Joe Biden when she got her Ed.D. so $20,000 or so in her paycheck shouldn’t have been that big a deal.

Is this the entirety of her thesis? When you take out the references and appendices, it’s 80 pages! Mine is more than 300, because that is what was required. And I am in no way an intellectual. Hers looks and sounds (yes, I skimmed the content) more like a master’s thesis, if that. My BACHELOR’s paper (in case you care, it was on game theory and busting open the prisoner’s dilemma in real-world applications) was 50-60 pages and involved more heavy intellectual lifting.

His visit certainly had to go through official channels (if real). But now I can’t find the picture anywhere on Parler. Oh well.
