Looks to me like the military is digging in to DC for awhile. Girl scout cookies are out, but I’m not interested after they wimped out on congratulating ACB. Besides, their cookies haven’t been good since they took out the trans fat 🙂
I’m not pushing Girl Scout cookies, but there are several companies across the country that bake cookies for them. All Girl Scout cookies are not created equal, and they haven’t been for a long, long time. One of my grown-up Scouts lives in the Dayton area. She sends me cookies every year because they’re very different than what she sold in the Boston area.
They had a cranberry chip cookie once, that was really good, but it was sold in a limited area and was only available in mine for 1 year. I don’t care about any of the current cookies (or the girl scouts)

I have a rule that I only buy cookies when a Scout asks me herself. If I get asked, I’ll keep you in mind. I don’t know of any Scouts in my neighborhood, but I do know a couple who could send me a message if they think of it. The Scouts will ship, but I don’t know if they’d send them to France.
The chocolate covered peanut butter ones are my favorite. In some parts of the country they’re called Tag-Alongs and in the less creative areas they’re called Peanut Butter Patties. Last year a group of Junior Scouts was selling cookies in front of Walmart. They were pitching “healthy cookies” at me. I made them check the nutrition information on the box, and they were shocked to find out the “healthy cookies” had more calories than several of the “not healthy” ones. I told them if they could guess how many years I have been a Girl Scout, I’d buy a box for every five years. One of the girls guessed 10, but her leader whispered in her ear, “If she’s playing this game, she must have been a Scout longer than that.” They settled on 25 years, and I bought 5 boxes of cookies. They could have sold me twice as many. My friend in Dayton sends me cookies that are two thin mints with frosting between that are covered in chocolate.

No fat and don’t forget many are now vegan (at least here in koolaid swampland) so no milk in that chocolate. And then there are the “message” ones. Messages are for valentine candy and should be cute or kind of dumb. Not SJW. Crap.
I buy my supply from Virginia where the thin mints have the chocolate cookies inside and the Trefoils still have butter. They are suppose to be Shortbread cookies. Not dry saltines .
My favorite company to look for in GS cookies is “Little Brownie Baker”, but they don’t make the Rhode Island GS’s cookies so I don’t know if they’ve switched to crappy cookies in the last 5 years. Girl Scout cookies are supposed to be a once a year thing. Making them healthier and tasteless is like not selling corn dogs and fried dough at the fair.
Most packaged stuff has tasteless gunk. Hostess cupcakes, Swiss rolls, ding dongs. All laden with preservatives and whatever healthy shite they bake in. Same thing with my in grocery store bakery. Nothing decadent. Cakes and bread taste like out of a box. The mammoth super supermarket put all of the independent bakeries out of business. It’s yuuge and way undercut the mom and pop places you could smell two blocks away. All gone. We had three in my tiny burg. Yeah it did cost about ten more for a birthday cake, but it was good and a once a year thing. Grocer bakery doesn’t even make from scratch in store. They get everything pre mixed and pop it in the oven. No different than Duncun Hines with canned icing. The nearest good cake shop is a half an hour away. An hour there and back! For a cake. Same thing with pizza. The rush to pump it out in under 30 minutes has in my opinion put most shops on par with frozen. I have tried them all during covid and there is no indivuality. I did discover that with having a ton of kids streaming through the house that the best is Little Ceasar’s. Ten bucks for a large pepperoni loaded with cheese, an order of breaddticks and a two liter. The local skimps on mozzarella quality and charges 21 for just the pie. I would pay 20 plus if it tasted like pizza used to taste.
I worry that covid is going to kill the few vestiges of flavor in my area. Things are shuttering for good. I’d rather dine out once a month and really enjoy it than go to Applebees twice a week.
I spoke with the guy who owns the pub across from police station. He is not allowed to serve more than three drinks and no one can sit at the bar. Tiny bar tables (4) that seat three? How can he make money. It is ten months. He can’t hold on much longer. The big companies are like buzzards circling above. PA only allots so many liquor licenses per area. You can sell your license for whatever someone will pay. He’s going to have to sell and it will be scooped up by yet another bland chain.
If you want really good baked goods, they aren’t that hard to make yourself. Then you get to control all of the ingredients. I don’t skimp on anything, and I still save a bundle. Pizza is easy, too. I make crusts 4 at time, which is the bulk of the work. They keep in the fridge for several days. Once the dough is made, I can make a pizza faster than I can pick one up or get pizza delivered. There’s not a lot of work actually making the dough. It just takes time to rise.
I love to bake (although my teenage son is the real master baker around here), but my FAMILY RECIPE is a cake that comes from a mix. Dumped on top of cherry pie filling and crushed pineapple. Sounds disgusting, is delicious.
Speaking of real cooking, has anybody here tried to make Tater Tots from scratch? I want to make a real Minnesota hotdish, but there is just no TT equivalent here. I’m going to try using frozen potatoes duchesse instead because I don’t have time to experiment with homemade and then try to freeze them on a workday, but I’m just wondering.
The chocolate chip/oatmeal cookie recipe on the quaker oats site makes an excellent cookie. As for brownies, nothing beats Nigella Lawson’s recipe in her ‘How to be a Domestic Goddess’ cookbook. I call them Goddess brownies. My change is to use an extra cup of chocolate chips instead of nuts. No one has complained, lol.

Little brownie is the baker for the northern Virginia troops’ supply. This is the first year I just emailed the moms directly as I had no idea how they would handle sales but let them know i would buy my usual boxes.
Yes, they are a once a year deal so the no fat, no sugar, no dairy make no sense. Although as a young scout myself I had a standing order of 52 boxes of thin mint from one couple and a 26 thin mint/26 tag a long mix for another. They said they froze well but that was quite a few years ago before anyone started playing with the ingredients.
Near to home most are from another baker but then some have the real deal. Out doing adoption events ( the pet stores always allow the girls to sell out front), I found one baker in Rockville and near my condo but the Petsmart nearer Frederick had little brownie. I would always buy an extra box or two from them to take to the office.
I try to eat only real food. I mean what the hell is in egg free, wheat free, gluten free, milk free, animal product free, food?

Yes, I love the Scottie cookies with chocolate chips. The vanilla ones are yummy too. At Christmas, Albertson’s had Walker’s on sale for $2.99 a box. I used $1-off coupons per box and stocked up.
