I never thought I’d care anything about Nicki Minaj, but I love her now.

    • Mothy67 says:

The best is Tucker Carlson defending her. I’m a fan of his but you can’t get whiter. I believe he is descendent of tv dinners. Swanson? He is defending one of the biggest rap stars against a black tv host. Joyous. Didn’t think it could get better but the anti Minaj is named Joy. I heard she is very generous with her extended family. I did a big party she paid for. It wasn’t for her. I think it was a baby shower. Not expensive like 50 dollars a person which in NY is cheap. She tipped the kitchen staff.

    • Mothy67 says:

Superbass is a very fun song.

    • elliesmom says:

I admit I didn’t even know who she was. Rap is probably the only kind of music I don’t listen to. To me, it’s missing the “music” part. She is one gutsy woman, and I’m delighted to have been “introduced” to her. Doesn’t change my opinion of rap as “music” or “not music”, but I will be interested in what this does to her career.

      • Miranda says:

I don’t like rap music, but I like her as a person. “If you’re Black and a Democrat tells you to put marbles up your ass, you have to do that. If a Republican tells you to look out for that bus, stand there and get hit.”

If I was going to buy rap, it would be hers.

      • Mothy67 says:

I consider rap like Opera. I was a big fan of La Boheme and a few other classics. I am not musically trained. I had season tickets to the Met. Sometimes I thought as I looked at people clapping that that was a shit show. Rap sprang from a place. You can’t , rather I can’t read Othello or All My Sons without context. Death of A Salesman? Linda Loman was married to her house. Not Willy. Every scene she talks about the house. She darns socks for crying out loud. To me rap is foreign. Like another language. It’s usually the beat that hooks me. Rap spilled out of bad neighborhoods. I feel intrigued cause I couldn’t be whiter.
White Lines is about cocaine but it is a fun song.

        • lateblum says:

I know very little about rap. Mostly because when I listen to music, it is the m u s i c (or the voice) I want to hear. Like em, rap holds little interest. But I will say that a good rapper is a true wordsmith and I have to give credit there.
When I was working one of our clients was a Christian rapper. He was a true poet. And a sweet person. I think that might’ve been my intro to fap as a music form.
I loved this Eminem rap that Mothy just posted. I listened twice. I’m certain I heard it before at the Oscars or other awards show.
          Thanks, M67

          • DeniseVB says:

Eminem’s movie 8 Mile was based on his struggles to get out of poverty using his gift as a lyricist. Lose Yourself….you have one chance…. was a good message to the ghetto kids and the unmotivated all the other kids. I think that’s why he resonated well outside the rap genre.

Lyn-Maneul Miranda did better at mainstreaming 🙂

        • 1539days says:

I’ll go one further. Rap often using existing music and melodies (bass lines) as a background for verses. Musical theater often uses the same score rearranged for different scenes.

    • Myiq2xu says:

We need more “influencers” to state the obvious truth – Critical race theory is a cancer and this cancel culture bloodfeud bullshit is going to destroy us. We don’t have to like each other but we have to find a way to get along.

      • elliesmom says:

I feel like I’m living in “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. So many people are afraid to speak up and say, “He’s naked.” When I asked a friend to share with me which of Obama’s speeches will make him remembered as a great orator, which she says he is, she couldn’t recall a single speech. She was stunned and embarrassed. Find me one clip where Trump said anything except everyone should get the vaccine. She couldn’t. Reagan’s line, “The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so” is why getting the truth out there is so damn difficult.

      • lyn5 says:

Haven’t been impressed with the right’s influencers.

        • elliesmom says:

No one was talking about Isaac Davis and Captain John Parker until the Redcoats showed up at Lexington and Concord, and only those of us who learned our Revolutionary War history locally can easily recall their names today. But they were, perhaps, the most influential “influencers” of their time. It wasn’t Thomas Jefferson who pulled the trigger. I’m not all that worried that I don’t know the names of the real influencers on the right- yet.

  5. Mothy67 says:

The Victoria’s Secret runway show with Minaj is fun. All those stunning super models who can dance. The guys in hoodies next to what 5 foot Nicki pulling off pure fun. What would it be like today with Megan Rapinoe. I repost. How do you not want to dance watching it

I used to take magnums of champagne on opening night to theaters. I always got free tickets. I am a flat line terrible dead writer. I suck. Oh my God though did I see staged abortions. One show was about conjoined twins in a ferris wheel singing. It got on Broadway. I look at Minaj and question what she is selling me. She sells fun. Suppose you all know my hero is Dolly. I like her simplicity. It is truth. I can quote Eugene O’Neil. Those titles are like candy to me. Morning becomes Electra, A long Days Journey Into Night, The Iceman Cometh, A Moon for the Misbegotten. I can taste his words. It’s like licorice. Dark and sweet. Bitter the taste. I can’t rule out rap cause I am not from there. I read D H Lawrance. No brother is going to read brooding Irish Catholic. Everything about me stems from my history. It’s been a tad wierd. I am a gay Irish Catholic. I have to look at the world through my experience. Some stuff is obvious in how it may inflate you. I was hatched with a bum ticker. Had a few holes in my heart my mom who quit school in 10th grade became a nurse. Of course she did. I have rugrat. I was unable to walk to the end of my street. Shay is an all star athlete. Give. To quote Tina Turner I don’t wanna fight no more. Too much talking. I don’t wanna play in pity playpen. Shayla Rayne is right in front of me. Right now. Not yesterday not tomorrow. Right here right now. Am I supposed to care about my dad breaking my nose in 1980???? No. I want to believe in my brat who is not my brat. I needed EM to school me because I need to stay on top of my game. I’m not thrilled or crazy about Shay moving on. I don’t want to make mistakes.
Wish I knew how to send EM A Confederacy of Dunces. People hate the book. It is my favorite. It’s racist, sexist, anti semetic, homophobic. Name it he offends. The author committed suicide. His mom took the manuscript to Walker Percy at Tulane. He was like crazy lady go away. She wouldn’t stop hounding him. He decided to read it so he could tell her in good faith to fuck off. He says he wanted to say sorry your son killed himself but move on. He started reading and could not put it down. It posthumously won the Pulitzer. I have good friends who hate it. I laugh. It’s got more than a splash of Don Quioxte. When you niavely look around and see not only are you dumb but so is everyone else.

    • elliesmom says:

I read the book ages ago. Truly unlikeable characters. Ignatius is a creep, and his mother is an enabler. I didn’t hate it, but I haven’t recommended it to anyone else. When I finish a book, I like to think the time I spent reading it was time well-spent. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me think. This one just made me glad it was over, and very glad I didn’t know any of the characters for real. I didn’t want to hurt your feelings so I just hoped you’d let it go.

      • Mothy67 says:

Now i will let go with a caveat. It was written before woke culture. Ignatious is horrible but so is everyone else. Have you read Geek Love. I’m not a fan of perfection. Life spun me with more than I deserved. I got to hang out with Toni Morrison and discuss/disgust Beloved. I don’t think she was untalented. I just found it to be Freudian. I don’t care for Freud.

  12. Mothy67 says:

Elliesmom name the library I will send them a donation if you read A Confedaracy of Dunces and Geek Love. You might hate both. Might really hate Geek Love. It’s at heart about maternal love but there is a cult and people dismember. It’s a circus family who run out of freaks so they injest
household poisons to create brand new misfits. The book was a reaction to Jonestown. It’s love and extreme anger/hate.
While I’m at it. I wonder if you have read The Bone People. It was published by a Maori woman in a magazine. It won the Booker but it is unedited. My favorite writer wrote the only way to improve on perfection is with a flaw. The Bone People has a raw honesty.

    • elliesmom says:

You might want to join Goodreads, if you haven’t already. Lots of people who like to discuss what they’re reading. I already have “book buddies” I share what I’m reading with, and they keep me pretty busy.

I’d not argue if someone said I was dormant. I be idiot. Shay threw garlic toast at my head. I am not thrilled she is having sex, but she got mad with flour products and told me. Perhaps in an indelicate way. I knew. She did tell me. I think it matters more that we discuss. She watches Euphoria on HBO. There is 13 Reasons Why on Netfllix. Sex, sex sex. I don’t want to not talk. I don’t know if you understand but we have had discussion here. I am better cause you shared your perspective. I have laid down kindle and made chat. She can’t go back. We have to deal with now. I want her to be kind to herself and safe. I was thrown away by my parents for looking at a boy. I don’t want my Shayla spending years hating herself. A few weeks ago I asked Shay if Nay was a lesbian. Naomi is absurdly smart. Her mom is lunch lady. She sleeps over all the time. Shay gets herself up and goes to practice. Naomi just stays in my house. It’s how we roll. Nay thinks she might be gay. I doubt it, but who cares. Shay won’t hurt her. I had a lot of not good take place on my body as a teen. They went at me hard not just boys in el camino who thought I was a urinal. My parents broke my bones. I did not perish. I care about a kid so she engages a boy. I am always going to stand by her. Nothing can make me turn away.

I was just thinking that mega media corporations are used to being able to set the agenda by gatekeeping what stories get covered. That seems to be what new media most crave is the ability to censor by ignoring a story. They think they have found that power by removing content, denying access to some people and labeling anything that doesn’t match the establishment BS as misinformation. But they haven’t. New platforms are emerging like Gab, Rumble, Bitchute, Parler, Getter. With them new voices are still being heard. I think the mega corporations waited too long to crack down. People had about a 10 year taste of freedom and I don’t see them giving it up to a bunch of corporate authoritarian jackasses.

French MSM is saying only 3000 providers OVER THE ENTIRE COUNTRY are being suspended (I think they don’t actually get “fired”–although the “suspension” is without pay–for another month or so). I’ve been reading in other mainstream, but smaller regional, publications that are reporting on small towns that are losing their only doctor. Towns that are already medical deserts.

These places have existed for a while, for my first 3 years here I lived in one–we lost our awesome town doctor to a years-long mental health leave (severely abusive husband, suicide attempt) and ended up with a revolving door of 25-year-olds until we moved to a city.

Typically these MSM articles involve the journalist asking the doctor, “Well, why don’t you just get the vaccine? Why don’t you do it? Why don’t you do it? Why don’t you do it?” after the doctor explains his or her reasons for not doing it.

      • 1539days says:

It all boils down to a suicide pact. By not taking the vaccine, you’re implying that someone who took it did something dumb and dangerous for no good reason. That makes them feel bad. Now that Trump isn’t the one suggesting vaccinations, the left wants to make the ones who got the jab feel good by making the unjabbed miserable. In the end, it’s “I had to do this thing, so you have to do it, too.”

        • jadzia1971 says:

Kind of reminds me of the women lawyers I met when I was a young lawyer. They were miserable because of all the discrimination they faced early in their careers and too many of them seemed to think that the next generation of women should suffer as they had.

      • elliesmom says:

Some people have absolutely no clue how to read cues from small children, and some people do and just forge ahead anyway. Someone must have told Biden many times “Do not sniff the children!” “Do not fondle other people’s wives!” “Keep your hands inside the amusement park ride!” ED said men did things like that from a sense of entitlement. A way of feeling powerful over people who couldn’t push them away. Small men who would never cross a boundary with another man- or a woman who would kick him in the nuts.

I wonder if those liability limitations can be cracked. They don’t ALWAYS hold up in court. And if they do, well, you have one photogenic, grieving family with a kid who died from vaccine-caused heart problems and a judge who says I really want to help you but my hands are tied? In times that made more sense, that’s the kind of situation that would get the laws changed.

Yeah, I sound like an ambulance chaser. But I remain so appalled by liability limitations coupled with mandates. Liability limitations should be for things like bungee jumping. Not mandatory medical treatments.

Ordered. Movie comes out next year. The synopsis reminds me of a lot of southern writers. Which then reminds me of Flannery O’Connor. Unrelated but my braiin goes there. Have you ever read Good Country People? It reminds me of Trump. A woman without a leg renames herself Hulga cause it sounds harsh. She has an advanced degree in philosophy and looks down on everyone. Meets a simple salesman who metaphorically rapes her leaving her without her prosthetic on a roof. It’s very O’Connor. She can be dark. Catholic. Thing is he outsmarts the educated woman looking down on him. When 2016 was the thing I thought hillary was like Hulga. So raw. He doesn’t utter deleterious. He spoke with flavor and used everyday language. He outsmarted the Brooklyn kids who went to Harvard. Robbie Mook was no match for Trump. I got on the bus the day after Meygan Kelley tried to blindside Donald with fat women comments. He said well sure Rosie. I was on the bus next morining. I live a stones throw from Pittsburgh. The bus runs from an hour away. It’s mostly black men going to work. They ride almost an hour on a bus. When the Steelers have a game you cannot shut up the bus. Same thing happened with Trump. They were calling him my n*gga. These were educated black men who take the bus an hour to work. I knew Hillary was fucked. She depended on algorithms. Take a bus or sit in a bar. I love a place called Jack’s. They open at 8 am. When it pours the guys who do construction hit the dive bar that opens at 8 am. I love cardhart and dickies. I may have opened a book at Oxford but I am unadulterated white trash. I gave up on pretending moons ago. I like spam. I enjoy spam cooking. That smell is amazing. I have imbibed at 8 am with most guys who do construction. Never heard a homophobic word. My brothers are mostly blue collar. I am not defined by my suburban white collar friends. I seriously grew up blue collar. Rich white women living in Towson don’t get to define me. Lex is third year nursing school on her way to get a doctorate. She has always known Uncle Tim is gay. Her boyfriends parents who are as Methodist as you get had me on vacation for a week. We got along. I surfed with his dad. I from my limited perspective only see abortion as an issue. I had a rough patch in the 80’s being gay. I cannot name one Republican who takes issue. Not one.

But it’s tough when they are shut out of society (and for the older one, he is graduating from high school this year and I’m pretty sure there is a mandate for the place he is going next)–it really puts a thumb on the scale. I presented it to them as “Look, I’m not telling you that you CAN’T, but I am telling you that you should wait as long as possible until more is known, because it is a permanent decision.”
