My Grandpa’s Grandpa, a shepherd fresh off the boat from the British Isles, joined an Iowa militia in the fall, his unit marched with Sherman to the sea to end the Civil War, & he was discharged the next year in late spring/early summer in Chattanooga.
Other ancestors didn’t arrive until about 20 years later from Germany/Poland.
