    Good Morning.

I didn’t see this on the morning news. I wonder why.

My groceries came this morning. For the first time in a long time there were several substitutions, and a lot of items missing. None of the bakery items I ordered came. That’s not a problem for me because I have 50 lbs of flour in the house, but it does add to my workload in the kitchen. The only meat that came was the bag of frozen meatballs for the pups. I have plenty of meat in my freezer, and the meatballs can be shared, but now I have cabbage for cole slaw and no pulled pork. 🙂 The produce had several substitutions- like eggplant for the zucchini. I love eggplant so that’s not an issue, but it’s not used the same way. Not sure why the store thought it serves very well as a substitution. They substituted green bananas for the ripe ones I ordered. I’m not interested in cooking them. They were supposed to get sliced into my cereal. Fingers crossed they’ll ripen in a few days.

I guess we’re playing grocery roulette again. At least this time I’m prepared for it.

    • jadzia1971 says:

I hate it when I can’t find (or am not delivered) ONE ingredient for a recipe. Typically the way this works is that the store is out of one critical ingredient for each recipe I want to make.

    • Somebody says:

Yes we are, I’m prepared too. Actually, I’m over prepared, but I have egg anxiety creeping in. So far we have eggs, but I remember😉 At least this time I have multiple sources for local eggs. My husband is annoyed with me over some of my purchases. I have stuff admittedly I’ll never use unless the apocalypse is upon us, but if the apocalypse is here he’ll thank me🤣

I understand some of the supply chain disruptions, but some of it makes no sense and I swear it’s just the overlords screwing with us.

Wish you were closer, I have 6 fresh zucchini in my fridge, plenty of pork butts in the freezer and even three frozen packages, three servings each of left over pulled pork from a couple of weeks ago. Bananas are apparently an issue, but at least here in my neck of the woods our grocery stores still have them.

I have no doubt you’ll turn the ingredients you did get into something wonderful and your house will smell divine😉

      • elliesmom says:

I bought several cartons of beaten eggs and put them in the freezer. Not “Egg Beaters”. Real eggs. They get separated when they’re defrosted, but my immersion beater puts them right again. They work fine in baked goods and as a binder. I bought one carton and checked them out before I stocked up. Not a total substitute for eggs, but a lot better than having none. My neighbor who has chickens had to close her egg stand because it’s too cold to leave the eggs outside, but she told me to knock on the door. The problem is she isn’t home most of the time, and I can’t see her driveway from my house. But so far, I’ve been able to get eggs at the store.

Re supply chain disruptions: TheConservativeTreehouse.com recently posted two excellent articles explaining this. The dates & titles are: Jan. 9, Temporary Empty Shelves Not a Supply Chain Crisis & Jan. 8, Things to Look For . . .

    • taw46 says:

My sister is usually the one who does the grocery shopping. But we were in town Friday night, so we stopped on the way home to pick up a few things. I did notice the cereal shelf was half empty, and the canned juices missing a lot of products. Probably other shelves too, just those happened to be the ones where I was shopping.

      • jadzia1971 says:

I noticed that the click-and-collect grocer (that I’ve been using since 2014) is out of almost EVERY kind of juice. Also my favorite overpriced throw-them-in-the-microwave lunch of lentils/tofu/rice is out of stock.

    • DeniseVB says:

It’s worse this year than at the height of the covid panic in 2020, the shelves are more empty than I remember. Wonder if this has more to do with vac restrictions for moving supplies? I blame Biden, there’s just so much more going on this year slowing everybody down. I stopped letting the store pick substitutions when they kept replacing maple/brown sugar cream of wheat with Coco Puffs ????

So eating-like-a-normal-person is not going great on today, my birthday. Because the H man has been cooking since YESTERDAY and the house is full of delicious smells. I fear I may need to escape the house soon. This isn’t too far from normal-person territory, right? I’m fine not snacking and eating constantly when the house smells like normal mid-afternoon, no-delicious-birthday-foods-cooking house.

    • jadzia1971 says:

Okay, I lost my battle to resist the chocolate chips in the cupboard, but to look on the positive side, I ate about 1/3 of what I normally would have, I feel like crap, and I’m definitely not interested in doing it again. And TECHNICALLY (because there’s still 2 chapters to go in the Allan Carr book) I haven’t actually quit yet, so there’s that.

    • elliesmom says:

It’s your birthday. Eat whatever you want. Just package up the leftovers and freeze them for another day instead of finishing them off all at once. Have a great birthday!

        Happy birthday to you too!

        • lateblum says:

Btw, I agree with em. I learned the hard way that the only chocolate that’s worth eating is the “really good” kind. So this year, because I’m “unclean” to my dil, she wouldn’t permit the girls to spend ANY time with me, so I self soothed by getting a really decadent but tiny chocolate cake and eating it on Saturday to celebrate my sister’s birthday, and Sunday to celebrate my birthday, and I still have some left to celebrate birthday ala Jadzia. It was a really small cake and the portions have also been really small, but there will still be some remaining.

So if there are any other January TCH birthdays, let me know so I can continue the celebrations❣️

Happy belated birthday to Leslie and her sister🎉🥂 I’m sorry you didn’t get to spend time with the girls🤐🤐 Start making plans now for all the things you’ll do with them next year when hopefully some sanity has returned. The dam is starting to break, the spell will soon be broken!

From your lips to His ears, Somebody❣️
I’ll celebrate a half-birthday with the girls because June is not part of the Covid season. We can picnic in the back courtyard and go to the beach even if it’s not yet warm enough to wade in Lake Michigan.

This is why I can’t hate Cruz, even when he says stupid shit like he did the other day. He is so good at these hearings, asking the questions out loud for the people to hear. If they didn’t know about the Feds and Ray Epps before, they do now.

        • Constance says:

Same here, Cruz irritates the hell out of me but he can really bring it in Congressional hearings. I wouldn’t rule out voting for him for President if Trump doesn’t run.

Two can play that game: Republicans threaten takeover of Senate floor with votes on Keystone XL pipeline, abortion and the border if Dems kill filibuster to push through voting rights legislation

I feel like I am seeing a change with my liberal friends. I was confused back in 2008 about how everyone seemed to become so insanely progressive. Things like abortion up until birth and boys deciding they are girls I could not gel with the people I had gone through my adult life with. We were all liberal but something changed with Obama. To me it felt like more than race but race was the tool to silence. I have never been a fan of Marc Rothko. I don’t dislike him his works simply don’t touch me. I went to a retrospect at The Whitney I am white trash I bought all the magazines that had anything to do with his work I walked through the museum and heard people falling in love with his stuff. They were all quoting The New Yorker, harpers and other. No one had an original thought. You love Rothko even if you don’t if you want to be upwardly mobile. I felt in the Obama years that all thought was extinguished. you were a Proggies or a racist.
I am very open about my struggles and who I am. I have never shied away from my darkness. I was talking with my best friend about how cool she thinks that her kids school loves transgender. I asked if she would still think it cool if Julian kills himself in 20 years. For the first time in forever Christina talked with me. I have had many people call me racist because I hold opinions. Seriously I am gay raising a child, Miriam lived with us for years she is from Basra.
Something happened in 2008 when discourse was not allowed — ever.
My friends suddenly now think I can be talked to again. I have not changed my opinions. I ask questions. I took philosophy 101. you ask if you want to get the answer you crave. Not my fault if I ask you that Julian who became Julia commits suicide. All I did was ask a question. the individual at issue will never hear my question but you ride a high horse and think my willing to debate is comparable to causing suicide.

I really like The Bluest Eye by Morrison. It is about a lot of things but one aspect was about black girls only seeing white dolls. I found that profound. I had never thought about it. I was lucky enough to meet Toni Morrison before Oprah. I saw her at a Penn lecture. She was amazing. We argued about Linda Loman. I said it is Millers take and she was married to the house thus the term housewife. She disagreed but fought me for an hour.
